RE: 2021-22 College Basketball Season General Thread
I almost called it. Houston had the ball down 65-63 with 10 seconds left. Had a timeout but opted to not use it. Player forgot to look at clock and never got a shot off. Brutal ending.

Chet Holmgren is possibly the most unique basketball player I've ever seen. It's probably that he's so skinny, but his arms are so long and what footwork on a guy that lanky.

Xavier is getting rolled by future conference mate Iowa State. The new Big 12 is going to be loaded for basketball. So far this year:
#4 Kansas 3-0 (Michigan State)
#6 Baylor 4-0 (Stanford)
Iowa State 5-0 (Xavier)
Texas Tech 5-0
Oklahoma St. 5-1 (NC State, L to Oakland)
West Virginia 4-1 (Pitt, Clemson, L to Marquette)
Kansas State 2-2 (Ls to Illinois, Arkansas)
TCU 3-1 (L to Santa Clara)
#12 Houston 5-1(Virginia, Butler, Oregon, L to Wisconsin)
#18 BYU 4-0 (Oregon, San Diego St)
Cincinnati 5-1 (Illinois, L to Arkansas)
UCF 4-0 (Miami)
Every night is going to be a war.

Watched much of the game. Kunkel was out with COVID and X went 3/21 on 3's while ISU hit 10/20. Brockington was absolutely on fire for ISU and most likely had the game of his career
I think X is going to be pretty good when they get Freemantle back and in synch. Scruggs was lousy today, but he's been there at PG for what - 7 years now it seems. They're kind of like UC and a lot of other teams these days in that they have a lot of pieces including new guys with experience. It's going to take some time to figure out roles and combinations but I could see both UC and X in the top 25 by the end of the season although probably not in time for the Shootout.

Scruggs is a good college player. Within the next month or so, it will dawn on him that the best he’ll do after playing at x is to play in the Turkish Underleague. His shot at playing in the NBA is as good as mine.
When he comes to understand reality, his game will drop off dramatically. I’ve seen it time and again with seniors who, up until their senior year began, thought that their future was living on Easy Street while playing for an NBA team.
Shortly after that, he’ll begin to look for excuses as to why his dreams were squashed. Typically, players in his shoes blame their college coach which in his case may be a legitimate excuse.
Accepting one’s own limitations is not only difficult, it is problematic as well.

I'm not trying to take shots at a rival but has Steele had a good team? I don't follow them much but his trend seems to be the teams don't progress as the year goes along.

That's pretty stunning. Georgia had lost 4 straight, and was coming off a home loss to Wofford. I suppose this helps us nominally in the near term, but hurts the conference SOS.

Mostly just hurts the AAC as Georgia is generally regarded as pretty awful.
Thankfully, our years of watching AAC teams collapse each year pre-conference, against inferior competitors, are about to come to an end. It's why the American has never earned the respect on the court that we would have expected after the split from the Catholic seven.

Since it relates to UC. Mick during his postgame presser last night.
Quote: Q: Working with Myles an ongoing challenge?
Mick: Oh, every day. But you know, Rome wasn’t built in a day so today you saw the culmination of a lot of hard work. You know, Darren Savino should have been a head coach three years ago when I left Cincinnati. He should have gotten that job. Now, Wes Miller is my friend and I’m doing everything I can to help counsel him and I want nothing but for the best for him, but Darren’s as good as there is. He has no business being an assistant, he does an unbelievable job developing players, so you’re seeing a lot of his work with Myles paying off.

If that’s the case why hasn’t anyone offered him a job in the past 10 years? I mean he’s been with Mick a long time and UC isn’t the only school that’s hired a coach in that time.

Well, hard to say he would have been worse than the goon we hired 3 years ago.
