Temple is one of the teams that I root for the most, and I would rather see them in the CUSA than the AAC when their ESPN broadcasting deal expires.

When UC, UH, UCF, Memphis, and SMU move to the Big 12, the CUSA will be a better conference than the AAC at that point.

In fact, there's a pretty good chance that the CUSA will be as good in football as the American will be in 2024, when UC, UH, and UCF will be in the Big 12, and better than the AAC in basketball, from top to bottom. The only thing keeping Temple in the AAC at that point will be the $$$.

Doubt it, because they need a home for their FB team, and with programs like NMSU, UTEP, and BB legacy schools like WKU and MTSU plus LTU, Jacksonville, and Liberty, the CUSA could become a better basketball conference than the A-10 from top to bottom.

Why would Temple leave the AAC and potentially end up like UConn?

I can't see it happening.

I can't see it happening.

Temple is committed to the AAC through 2031-32, and that's unlikely to change, because Temple and the handful of other AAC "remainers" are on track to be paid more than any other G5 conference schools in broadcasting revenue.

Thus, even though the AAC could drop way down in stature, the university probably wouldn't leave before 2032 unless they were to be invited to join a P5 conference.

However, if the AAC becomes much less competitive, e.g., due to the loss of Memphis and SMU, ESPN would probably slash revenues to the AAC remainers to the same levels it will pay Charlotte, etc.

If that were to happen, and if there are no prospects for a potential P5 membership, Temple might be better off joining a more competitive eastern G5 conference in 2032. The MAC doesn't interest them, so CUSA and SBC would be their other all-sports alternatives.

The only other possibility they might consider would be playing football in the MWC and their other sports in the Big East or Atlantic 10.

The main point though is that if CUSA becomes more competitive than the AAC will become after losing Memphis and SMU, a school like Temple might consider joining when their current broadcasting deal expires.

.

Consider this, for example (current MBB rankings of current & future AAC programs):

8 Houston*
16 Memphis
58 UAB ^

59 UCF*.................midpoint (median) of 3 departing AAC 1.0 programs=59.0
61 SMU
66 Wichita State

95 Cincinnati*........midpoint (median) of the 11 current AAC programs=95.0
118 UNT^
134 Tulane

...................................midpoint (median) of the 8 AAC "remainers"=134.5
135 Temple
.........................midpoint (median) of the 14 future AAC "2.0" programs=135.5
136 Rice^
147 Tulsa
152 ECU

...........................midpoint (median) of the 6 incoming CUSA programs=164.0
192 USF
194 Charlotte ^
202 FAU^
261 UTSA^

Future AAC
* schools that will be joining the Big 12 in 2024
^ schools that will be joining the AAC in 2024

With these kinds of rankings, the conference would only earn one NCAA bid if the regular season champion (Memphis, in this case) were to win the conference tournament.

.

Now, remove Memphis & SMU, to get an idea of how bad things could get:

8 Houston*
16 Memphis*
58 UAB ^
59 UCF*.................midpoint (median) of 5 departing AAC 1.0 programs=59.0
61 SMU*
66 Wichita State
95 Cincinnati*........midpoint (median) of the 11 current AAC programs=95.0
118 UNT^
134 Tulane

135 Temple
136 Rice^
...................midpoint (median) of 12 AAC programs w/o Memphis & SMU=141.5
147 Tulsa
152 ECU

...........................midpoint (median) of the 6 incoming CUSA programs=164.0
192 USF
194 Charlotte ^
202 FAU^
261 UTSA^

Future AAC
* schools that will be joining or are viewed as likely to join the Big 12
^ schools that will be joining the AAC

.

With few potential at-large teams, the AAC could easily become a one NCAA bid conference at that point, and the only remaining football programs with top 25 teams in recent memory would be UTSA and Navy's struggling FB program.

.

I would add Missouri State to make it 10 teams now then 3-5 years from now add Kennesaw State and UCA. If WKU leaves, which they will I would add EKU to replace them. This is just my opinion, if C-USA want to build up football.

"If WKU leaves...they will" How do you know this for sure? WKU may be here a long time. No invite. No departure.

Why would WKU stay?

1. NO INVITE
2. Much improved media deal (exposure not necc. money)
3. Addition of "satisfactory" team(s)

It is that simple really.

I don't know this for sure, but what I do know is that WKU wants to leave C-USA. Yes those things you mention can and might keep WKU from leaving, but WKU could get an invite, the new media deal could be the same, and C-USA could add UCONN or UMASS Football only, WKU would not like that. The operational cost would be too much for the teams in C-USA to add teams that are worst then bad FCS teams. Plus, you don't know how things are going to turn out. If and when WKU gets and opportunity to leave they will.

The teams I want C-USA to add are teams that are good FCS playoff level teams. These teams are in the playoff every year and in good locations. These teams would help improve the football side of C-USA similar to what the Sunbelt did.

No, Conference USA does not need to add garbage football-only members UConn or UMass. They are completely worthless programs that add no value to this conference.

jones682-- "if and when WKU gets the opportunity to leave they will" This could be said about ANY current C-USA member. You already have us GONE-- which is ridiculous.

You are just manipulating answers to your own argument. We have to base conference decisions on reality and that says WKU is here for the foreseeable future.

Don't you think C-USA would have reacted differently "IF" -- LAST NOVEMBER-- we KNEW we would lose NINE teams. This time next year Memphis could be in the BIG12 and MT could be going to the AAC with WKU STILL HERE.

Actually it is very apparent to anyone who cares that WKU is much closer to being out the door than any of the 5 left from CUSA 3.0. UTEP, NMSU and LT would be gone tomorrow if the MWC called but that conference actually said they are not expanding because thiir media partners won't pay for it. A very clear no. No such clarity from the MAC. They won't expand without an acceptable partner for WKU. Maybe one will pop up tomorrow or the next day or next month or next year.

Miner is on target concerning the MAC. If the CFP is approved for expansion to 12 teams in a couple weeks, you might see some movement. If UMass still declines to bring all sports to the MAC, then Missouri State could be on deck.

Till we are gone- we are here- same as everybody else. That "partner" for WKU may not appear for several years if EVER.

UMASS looks entrenched in the A10. Missouri St. is VERY hesitant and MANY in the MAC think it is too far away. I think we need to move on but keep our eyes open.

Good leadership (cough, cough) could turn C-USA into a good conference.
