If Lunardi had a job that paid him what he was worth, he'd be the only one picketing along with those demanding a living wage, begging to be paid minimum wage

The usual four (Myron Medcalf, Jeff Borzello, John Gasaway and Joe Lunardi) discussed this question:

"The Memphis Tigers are ranked No. 12 in the AP poll, which identifies them as a second-weekend NCAA tournament team. Are you buying or selling Memphis in the Sweet 16?"

The first three are buyers with very nice things to say about the Tigers. But as usual, Lunardi is down on the team. His comment: "Once again, an incredibly hyped Memphis team is expecting to be among the last standing in March. Haven't we seen this movie before? And didn't the last one end in the relative obscurity of Frisco, Texas? Sorry to be the contrarian."

Lunardi even has the wrong year. The NIT was last year. The #1 recruiting class and Penny's claim to win a National Championship was 2 years earlier. We did go to the NIT that year but it wasn't in Frisco, TX. It was at Madison Square Garden. Of course, we lost at Creighton.

Inaccurate soundbite shall be referred to as a Lunardi from here on.

Uh the last time we had the number 1 recruiting class nobody went anywhere. Covid ended the season for everyone.

Yep. To get the timeline straight:

2018-19
Recruiting Ranking #30
Loss to Creighton in 2019 NIT
Final Record 22-14

2019-20
Recruiting Ranking #1
NIT and NCAA tourneys cancelled due to COVID
Final Record 21-10

2020-21
Recruiting Ranking #24
Won 2021 NIT Tournament
Final Record 20-8 (notice a trend with our losses?)

2021-22
Recruiting Ranking #1

Last time we had the #1 class the #1 player only played 3 games, the #4 player missed a bunch of games at the end of the year and Isaiah Maurice was our only upper classman.

We ain't never had a shining moment like this in our BB history, imo. NObody has.

Consider the experience of Larry Brown + our NBA experienced coaches ...the focus of our program....our recruiting class, very carefully hand picked.....the upper classmen ready to rock and roll the place...

It's just too much for the old media dudes and the folks who rank teams to wrap their heads around lol

just have to go out and do to AL and TN what the 2008 Tigers did to Texas and MiSt.
No pundits picked us then either.

I agree, in a perfect world that would be great. However, to shut up the people like Lunardi we have no margin of error and must convincingly win every game.

Yep... Look at Cincy. No losses, and they get dinged for not beating teams by enough. Then Bama sneaks by LSU and everyone looks the other way.

What’s worse is there are analysts now talking up ND for the playoff, if they finish with only 1 loss…

Because if it was the #4 player in the class I guess Precious was close to that...He didn't miss any.

At least you have a chance in hoops. Gotta win it on the court instead of a conference room.

They are getting better due to better talent and more experienced players but still incredibly disorganized.

Sure, that is the way it works for a coach... They also have a coach that is learning and making changes much quicker and earlier in the year...
