Volleyball Senior Night
Well technically tomorrow afternoon will be their final home game, but congrats to the three seniors being honored tonight on Senior Night against UTSA. Tia Grippo, Elizabeth Labue and Nicole Lennon will be recognized tonight.
If you haven't ever seen Nicole Lennon play, you're doing yourself a disservice if you miss out on this final chance to see her play at Tudor. There is no question she is the top player in Rice volleyball history, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if she becomes the first Rice volleyball player to have her number retired (it seems like we have a couple of women's basketball retired numbers?).
Hopefully her season will keep going past this weekend and next week's conference tournament.

The conference tourney is in 2 weeks. Still don't understand why Genny hasn't schedule at least one match for next week to keep the team "sharp". IMO, save for Nicole, they really haven't been sharp since early in the season.

Tia and Elizabeth are being honored even though they have a year of eligibility left. Carley is not even though she is in the same class[/align]. I assume that means that Carley will be back next year for her pandemic bonus year. If yes, definitely good news.

Really long rally with both teams making some huge digs. Adekunle finally finishes it, 9-7. UTSA timeout.

RE: Volleyball Senior Night
Best offensive showing in weeks. Ellie having a career match with team-leading 16 kills vs. only 2 errors (.519 hit%). Nicole with a double double by the end of the 2nd set, finished with 11 kills (.385), 14 digs and 1 solo block. Anota with 9 kills (.529) and Maruska with 7 kills (.250).
Rice breaking open a tight 3rd set that UTSA once led 9-6. Now 24-11 Rice.
Only negatives are the 9 service errors (I thought we had licked that problem long ago) and only 3 blocks.
25-11 final. Dominant sweep for a change. Let's repeat tomorrow in the regular season finale.

RE: Volleyball Senior Night
Nowhere near as sharp as yesterday. They were clearly double teaming Nicole, and it's reflected in her poor efficiency (15 Kills, 8 errors, .171 hit%), with almost all her errors being blocked. Conversely, Maruska continues to be consistently inefficient (12 kills, 7 errors, .161), with almost all her errors being unforced. She obviously has talent, but you'd hope that by the end of her second season she'd start improving her efficiency. She hasn't. Wondering if Ellie was feeling under the weather as she was a total non-factor after dominating yesterday, and sat out the final set.
UTSA with 20 attack errors, 8 service errors and 3 reception errors. You can't give up 10 points a set and hope to be competitive.

Outstanding. Smart move to stay sharp heading into the conference tourney.

Our 2nd straight CUSA regular season in which we go a perfect 12-0. That's 26 straight regular season CUSA wins in a row, dating back to the last loss (Senior Night in 2019 against Western Kentucky, which had a big crowd that included me since it was a VB/MBB doubleheader).

In women's basketball, not volleyball
(they were going to play that game at Louisiana, but that venue is now hosting a state volleyball playoff tournament, so Rice is hosting the game instead)
