Next year is the 4th year of a 5 yr contract. I'd imagine he'll need a completely new contract with new incentives to reflect our new position. And for the most part, FBS assistants make more than FCS ones too, so they'd be getting nice raises too.

Cig's first year base salary was $425k. I believe it's still the same. I recall Houston had something in his contract for if we moved to FBS, so I assume the same case with Cig. JMU typically seems to get what I see as good (for JMU) deals when paying coaches. I'd assume Cig would be around 600k when we move to FBS.

Typical Dukester says that by using the Sags, JMU would likely of finished in the top 4 of the new Sunbelt on average the last 3 years under Cig. He's certainly the head coach for the move. I think his experience as an assistant on a high level FBS program will also be beneficial. Will he be successful with the increased consistent competition? Time will tell. I think our defense will hold up in the Sunbelt. I'm not as confident with the offense against better defenses, and I'm hopeful this staff can start to find/attract high caliber QBs. Prior recent coaches brought in some solid QB talent to JMU. Lee, Schor, DiNucci as transfers, and Cole as a HS recruit. Liberty has performed well due to a quality transfer QB.

Yes, Cig get's an increase, and Yes he's the one to lead us to FBS.

If I recall, Houston also had a clause in his contract if we had moved up. I imagine that was probably the case for Withers and perhaps Matthews.

He's a listing of FBS coaching salaries. It's sortable, so sort based on conference to see current Sunbelt salaries.

https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salarie...ball/coach

It would be hard to argue that even $700 wouldn't be a bargain to JMU. Based on what others are paid you could argue 750-800k makes sense. ODU is paying it's coach $762K. Does he deserve more than Cig?

Interesting the biggest name coach is getting by far the lowest wages.

I may be wrong on it, but I thought Houston had one as well. He definitely had FBS aspirations and would surprised if that wasn't discussed.

Can we just get him an assistant or consult whose sole job is only to help Cig with time management?

I think 700-800 is fine to start. I'd imagine the move up also triggers an extension to Cig's contract, so that also enters the equation.

As much as I dislike some of the play calling this season, I think Cig is a guy who know FBS and can help us ramp up. That being said, you can't overpay before knowing how the program responds to the jump to FBS.

Exactly. Let’s not forget Cig played D1 QB at WVU. He grew up in a household with a father who was a major D1 coach. His coaching pedigree is littered with excellent coaching gigs at P5 programs, including his last at Bama before heading off to be a HC. He’s been successful at all previous stops, and as a HC, and is running a successful program at JMU. The difference between Cig and the “in-over-his-head” bozo who tried to transition ODU to FBS play is as stark as it could be, or in another example, the “over-the-hill” dud hired by Fake GSU to try and start their FB program.

Cig is the perfect man for this time at JMU. He’s experienced and a good recruiter. He has coaching connections all across the country, and especially with Bama and the SEC. And most importantly (as has already been mentioned) he’s the right age. Cig will stay at JMU through the transition to FBS, and hopefully help lead JMU to early success in FBS play. If not, Cig will be replaced, or simply retire in 5-7 years. It’s a win-win all the way.

I believe and hope Cig will be with us longer than that. He loves football too much to simply walk away and there is no way he ever gets fired. I expect us to be in the top three of the Sun Belt right out of the gate.

The only way Cig leaves JMU is if he is made a killer offer by a P5, not at all impossible. But, I believe the offer would have to be huge to dislodge Cig from Harrisonburg. I believe money is secondary to Cig and legacy is everything. He is not a hooker like MIke Houston, selling himself to the top bidder regardless of how hopeless the job may be.

Man, some touchy folks on here. Who said Cig should definitely not continue during the transition? We're talking salary ranges and current coaches in the SB, and how Cig fits. It's a fact he has never been at that level as a HC so it's fair to discuss. Not like he majority of good FCS coaches have parlayed that into FBS success, but Cig should absolutely be given the chance. I'd love to see him bring in a costly ringer at recruiting.

Looking at recent hires in the SB though, they've really stepped things up in terms of pedigrees and salaries. If/when we ever do need to hire the next coach it won't be like the ~$600k range of historical SB hires if we want to stay lock-step with top programs like we did in FCS. Exciting times ahead, can't wait to watch it play out.

RE: Cignetti's New Salary/Contract for SB
A little off topic (maybe a new thread?) but with the "coaches need a raise talk" and some student fee talk elsewhere.... does JMU go on a quest to raise more money from donors/sponsors? In my experience; JMU athletics/Duke Club hasn't done the best job selling their supporters. When I look at the product I receive for the amount if money I spend, It's a pretty darn good value.

Apples and oranges but when VCU moved from the CAA to the A10, there was a big push for all donors to increase there donations. They ditched some of the local small business sponsors and went after the more regional businesses, they did meet the team, golf tournament, travel with to away games, kind of a "anything for a buck" attitude. As a long time supporter, It felt "dirty" but totally understand being successful at the big boy table takes a whole lot of money.

Totally my opinion but I think the AD is going to need to step up their game in a big way to encourage the average JMU fan to open their wallets.

100% the AD asks for more donations. The FBS contract will have a university funded component and a Duke Club funded component. This is common with most FBS contracts. Fans pay the salary bump, at least if they want a winner. Low pay= crappy coach and crappy program.

RE: Cignetti's New Salary/Contract for SB
I have as much confidence in Cignetti as I do anybody, and I don't care when he got his first job at whatever level. You know, Tim Duncan spent four years in college and could have been a number one pick as a one-and-done. He was happy at Wake. Maybe Cignetti was happy where he was. Not everyone wants the pressure cooker of the top job right away. And many of those that do are d-bags and cheats. Kudos to the guy who takes it as it comes.

Cignetti's got a good pedigree and he's won at JMU. He certainly deserves four or five years at the FBS level to prove he can make it, or show that he can't.

EDIT: Following up on the notion of d-bags and cheats, FBS is tall cotton. Lots of unsuspecting administrations and fan bases get blindsided by recruiting violations and other NCAA rule violations by less-than-scrupulous HCs, assistants and coordinators. I hope that JMU will always put character first, and not chase big names for glory. We're not that school.

Just always assume that every coach will leave for more money and wants to climb the ladder as high as (s)he can, you'll almost always be right. Every coach we've ever had has had some people going "I think this one is different and wants to be at JMU forever" and so far that's been the case what, once in my lifetime? Mickey?

Let's just hope he's successful enough that we're looking for someone to keep it going after he gets hired away instead of looking for someone to get us back on track after firing him.

There have been and will continue to be those that believe Cig should not transition us to FBS. Not calling anyone out on these boards(although I'm positive they are here as well), but there are some on other social media accounts that are very outspoken about how we should switch coaches sooner rather than later. Oddly enough, they give a lot of praise to Mike Houston to this day.

Not calling anyone out on these boards(although I'm positive they are here as well), but there are some on other social media accounts that are very outspoken about how we should switch coaches sooner rather than later. Oddly enough, they give a lot of praise to Mike Houston to this day.

Who are these posters? Or are you just making stuff up? I'm not seen people who have said we should switch coaches sooner than later...... Can you show us some examples on here?

We're talking salary ranges and current coaches in the SB, and how Cig fits. It's a fact he has never been at that level as a HC so it's fair to discuss. I raised it in this thread and there are others on Facebook who brought it up. I am not saying we definitely should switch before we transition but should definitely consider it. The first couple of years in the SB are critical and if Cig (or another HC) screws it up, it could set the program back for years if not a decade. Again, see odu as an example. And experience as a position coach at P5 schools does not automatically mean he is ready to lead an FBS program. Withers was an interim HC at UNC AND DC at Ohio st. Would anyone want him back? Maybe for the juice but that’s about it.
