Cignetti's New Salary/Contract for SB
It looks like Cig is going to helm the ship during this transition which leads to some questions...
Any one know what we are going to have to increase Cig's
paycheck to be competitive with our new SB mates? Anyone know how this typically goes, do they rip up the old contract and begin anew or is there a way to just increase the pay over the lifetime of the current contract?
Are our DC/OC salaries competitive already or is the assistant pool going to have to grow as well?

I can tell you GSU just handed out $800k for their new coach today.

Are we to just assume coach Cig transitions up with the program, or should he need to vetted further? Would be a big spend, not critiquing just wondering...

I would assume he has some clause in his contract to pay him midpoint salary of whatever conference we join.(Sun Belt average is currently 800k.) I believe ODU gave Wilder a new deal when they joined C-USA.
Next year is the 4th year of a 5 yr contract. I'd imagine he'll need a completely new contract with new incentives to reflect our new position. And for the most part, FBS assistants make more than FCS ones too, so they'd be getting nice raises too.

He's 28-4. That and the administration not appearing to want to roll the dice on letting coaches go in the past suggest that there is no reason to expect he won't be the coach.
Sun Belt salaries range from $430k at ULM to $2M at Louisiana. The majority of schools seem to be paying in the $700ks so I would look for us to land close to there.

Just fired USC coach with a $12mm buyout. The stars aligned and they got a steal, this is close to a Lefty type deal for them. We're not going to find a similar pedigree for $800k unless it involves a coach fired for doing lines of coke during half time or burping the worm in the library stacks.

Same way Youngstown got Pelini. Nebraska paid the lions share of the contract. Other than the first year though, not sure Pelini was worth it.

RE: Cignetti's New Salary/Contract for SB
JMU has a successful football program under Cignetti. JMU is moving up. Folks can criticize the lack of an FCS championship thus far but you bring your successful head coach for your successful program with you as you move up.
For continuity sake you let Cignetti lead JMU into the next era and see how he does. He deserves that and it’s a no brainer on many levels. He’s also more likely to work with you on the salary given what he currently makes that he took the JMU job only a few years ago at the current salary, etc.
JMU as a newly transitioning FBS program doesn’t need to worry about hiring a new coach, implementing a new system, establishing new recruiting relationships etc. It would add significantly to the challenges of moving up.

RE: Cignetti's New Salary/Contract for SB
Absolutely Cig has to be the guy that leads the program to FBS. I think every coach since Mickey thought it was a possibility (probability?) and part of the reason they took the job.
Cig not only has a strong record as a head coach at DII and DI, but he has been an assistant at P5 schools that were successful. Alabama, Pitt, NC State…. He knows what it takes in FBS and there will be zero learning curve.
It couldn’t line up any better for JMU in my opinion.
Plus, at 60 years old he has enough youthful energy to last for years, but is not a prime candidate to move up to a bigger job if he has a few great years when JMU starts FBS.
I agree that the proper starting salary is the midpoint of the Sun Belt. That is fair, then he can earn his way up to the top if he produces. Wow, did not think Napier was pulling $2 million annually in the Sun Belt. That is boss money for a program that isn’t generating a ton of revenue. Gotta be fueled be a passionate booster club.
It will soon be time to step up donors.
2019 Knight Commission data…
Louisiana football coaching staff salary total $3.4 million
Sun Belt average coaching staff salary total $2.5 million
JMU football coaching staff salary total $2.1 million
So it doesn’t look like a huge Cig raise is needed, but still about $400k additional needed for the entire staff annually.

On the flip side, you have to wonder why at 60, Cig still has not gotten an FBS HC offer. Most FBS head coaches get their first FBS HC job in their 40’s and certainly by their 50’s. I think coach Cig is a good coach at the FCS level but FBS is a whole different level. I don’t want us to make the mistake as odu and have an FCS coach who was clearly over his head at the FBS level and set the program back for years. JMU football is a great job at the FCS level and will be a good job at the FBS level. We will have no shortage of qualified interest if we are to go looking for a new HC as we transition to the Sun belt.

It’s not happening there is 0 chance he is not the guy to be the coach when we first enter FBS.

Average SBC coach Salary is between 600K-1 Million. Billy Napier at ULL gets 2 million, but he's far from the norm.

There's no way Cig's not the guy, I don't know if it's possible to **** the bed next year badly enough to not be the guy. I do hope the leash isn't too long once we get there, it's not like he's exceeded expectations or even quite met expectations so far in my opinion so he needs to show that his JMU teams can compete in a conference where we know JMU should be able to compete. It's not the same Sun Belt GaSo went in and won immediately though, and it's not the garbage that CUSA is going to be so if he's not the guy long term this Sun Belt will show that quickly.

Cig is the guy.
I believe he is around 500k in comp now. Expect to see that go to 700ish to start.

I am glad that I hadn't just taken a sip of coffee when I read this. Thanks for the laugh. I had never heard that activity described that way before. I now have a new one for my repertoire of funny sayings.

Cig should be the guy, unless he doesn't want to be the guy.
No coach should be fired for the record he has put up. Almost any other FCS school would kill to have the record we have had with Cignetti.
I get that our standards are high, but he does not deserved to be fired in any way, shape or form. Even some of the best coaches have failed to win the big game. That doesn't mean they were crap coaches.
Anyway, he still has a chance to prove it this year.
And be careful what you wish for. For every Cignetti, there are a handful of Withers.

Also this idea that FBS would be too much for Cignetti is hooey. As Hart stated he has plenty of experience and that perspective will be valuable for JMU Football at the next level.

Exactly! This guy has been there. His father is a legendary coach at WV. He coached at NC State and Bama. He knows what it takes to coach at the FBS level.
At the very least, he deserves the opportunity to take us there.

Exactly. Let’s not forget Cig played D1 QB at WVU. He grew up in a household with a father who was a major D1 coach. His coaching pedigree is littered with excellent coaching gigs at P5 programs, including his last at Bama before heading off to be a HC. He’s been successful at all previous stops, and as a HC, and is running a successful program at JMU. The difference between Cig and the “in-over-his-head” bozo who tried to transition ODU to FBS play is as stark as it could be, or in another example, the “over-the-hill” dud hired by Fake GSU to try and start their FB program.
Cig is the perfect man for this time at JMU. He’s experienced and a good recruiter. He has coaching connections all across the country, and especially with Bama and the SEC. And most importantly (as has already been mentioned) he’s the right age. Cig will stay at JMU through the transition to FBS, and hopefully help lead JMU to early success in FBS play. If not, Cig will be replaced, or simply retire in 5-7 years. It’s a win-win all the way.
