Only thing I figure is maybe they felt they needed to 'crack the conference ice', and make themselves eligible to join a better one soon?

Based solely on the strength of their athletics Liberty should have been in one of the East Coast G5 conferences already. Now that CUSA has broken the ice for them they have a chance to prove themselves both athletically and as an institution. It's a win/win for them an CUSA.

I agree. Liberty should have been in CUSA or SBC already, so them falling in to this new CUSA's lap was a lucky break for CUSA, and it serves Liberty as well.

We have thrived in our independence and would have preferred to continue as such. But the events of the past few weeks have changed the landscape considerably. Unless UTEP, LaTech & FIU joining the independent ranks, our late season scheduling possibilities were going to become more challenging.

I am still not sold that my alma mater is all in on this. Unless WKU & MTSU stick around, this is going to be a tough sell to our fan base. Outside of Army & BYU, no other school's fan base was enthusiastic about independence as Liberty's. It could still happen with just three remaining. But I am not convinced based solely on Brett's "likely" tweet.

The advantage for joining C-USA is getting the G5 bid to the NY6 bowls. And if playoffs expand, it would be even harder for an Independent to grab a spot.

Yes, I suspect Liberty is about to become a common member of the Top 25. The other teams will beat them here and there (esp. LaTech), but their resource advantage is going to be magnified in such a weak conference. It’s also a good opportunity for FIU if they replace Butch with a high energy program builder.
