RE: 2022 Coach Siddle Call in Show
The league is currently No. 15 per KenPom, which isn't close to the best it's been, but it's better than the past three seasons (2021 - 19th, 2020 - 18th, 2019 - 22nd).

Historically, it's about where it has been, with the CAA averaging a ranking of 15.5 since 2000. Since 2010, the league has ranked 16th.

A few of those name-brand wins would have helped with perception, but in all, the top half of the conference is really solid right now.

RE: 2022 Coach Siddle Call in Show
The first minutes of this show is giving me flashbacks to CB, "they just made some tough shots".
"Simms is doing a really good job in his new role". I can't even, i just can't. Just shut it off. He can't be that clueless can he? I'm really losing all faith.

RE: 2022 Coach Siddle Call in Show
Just listened to Travis Hackert (One of our assistants, and notably the "offensive coordinator"). I was more than disappointed in this, because when asked directly about what we're doing to create scoring opportunities the answer was pretty much garbage in comparison to what we've seen. He mentioned that they are coaching the pick and roll and being a "paint touch team". Ummmmmmmm what? When? Are they coaching a different team that we're not watching?

Furthermore, when asked about planning, etc he mentioned they're analyzing the other team and looking at ways to attack? Yeah, they must be seeing that every team we play is susceptible to jacking 3's and wishful thinking.

We all bought into the Siddle hiring as a way to identify a "system" that we'll put our UNCW stamp on. As of right now, all I see is confusion and extremely questionable coaching decisions.

RE: 2022 Coach Siddle Call in Show
It may be that he feels that Sims is hard to keep out of the paint because he’s a load. Making the right read off the ball screen needs to continue to improve was mentioned as well. And, he likes Jaylen’s leadership qualities ( I can see that-great young man!). I’m simply trying to look at from their view.

I didn’t see the Jacksonville game but it sounded like they were hedging hard and blowing it up. I dunno. I listened to the show and am willing to let them coach as they see them every day. Like Scribe, I am more patient than most on here but understand fans being upset. We all want a winning team or at least a competitive team.

If it were me, I would play fast and aggressive on both ends pushing the ball hard and fast when possible. They play better when flying around like in the Coastal game and just playing a more aggressive, instinctive game. When the game goes to half court, get into something quick and be intentional making plays for others in a quick fashion.

I know you're going to ride the "Sims is the man" train to the end, but at this point it's propoganda that isn't supported by facts. I just hope Siddle doesn't ride it with you. You do realize that he is shooting 32.6% from the field which is the lowest on the team besides Fornes, Oglesby and Thomas, right? And when you factor in that he takes more shots than anyone on the team that's a losing recipe. It's ok to admit it when you're wrong. And yes, Sims can get in the paint but he can't hit the shot when he gets there. And he can get open for three, but he can't hit the shots when he gets them. And he is a PG that doesn't pass and somehow ends up shooting more as PG than he did at the 3-4 spot.

And now we will get to see Sims look REALLY good in his "new role" against a DII team in Mt. Olive and we'll get to hear how great he is. Honestly the best thing that could happen in that game is a loss. Then we'd have to face up to the need to make drastic changes heading into conference play. And if we don't change, my prediction is we will be out of contention for a top five four spot in the CAA before we get out of January.

This is not about me 82. Please read my post carefully. I’m not advocating anything at this point. I’m just trying to look at it from their possible view. I gave my take at the end of my last post.

It sounded like he plans to stick with Jaylen Sims at point guard. That and "tweak some things".

Also he said he was sure the shots were going to start falling , in part due to better shot selection. (I would note that we are #318 in free throw shooting - not so much better than our #347 in field goals overall - so I'm questioning the extent to which shot selection is the problem).

At the end , Mike V asked him about more fluid movement like we had seen glimpses of in some games and Coach didn't comment on that but instead responded with comments about our better shot selection, saying he was highly confident they were going to start falling.

I guess my question remains, when Coach says 'this thing won't start clicking right away, it's going to take some time', what is 'this thing'?

One could be forgiven for thinking ( having just watched that show) that Coach is more or less satisfied with our sets - with Jaylen Sims running the point - and the plan is to keep doing what we have been doing (with some 'tweaks') until the shots inevitably start falling.

Whatever "this thing" is, it had better start clicking immediately or the season will be over and we'll be at the bottom of the CAA. It's December 14th and our first conference games are December 29th and December 31st.(Delaware/Drexel) at home and Jan. 3rd and Jan 5th(Hofstra/NU) away. Unless things start clicking immediately, we could easily be 0-4 in the CAA before the students are back in school. Right now we will be underdogs in every game except maybe William and Mary and Elon.

That's why I hate seeing Mt. Olive on the schedule right now. It's a useless game that will likely give us false confidence if we win with this stupid experiment of Sims at PG, then we will get humbled by Campbell and maybe even High Point before we figure out "this thing" isn't going to click and have to then start over again during conference play. I'm sorry, but I just haven't seen the positive takeways from the Sims at PG experiment that are leading the coaching staff to believe it's going to click and magically the shots will just start falling. Not to mention this experiment keeps Phillips on the bench for over half the game and he barely gets any shots. If that doesn't change, I seriously hope he transfers out. He's too good a player to sit the bench while we feature a PG who can't shoot and doesn't pass.

"Trust the process", "It's a long season and it will have ups and downs", "we are going to win a lot of games". Do you think part of his problem is he's too stubborn to make the needed changes? He seems so concerned about sticking to his guns even when a decision is silly, Ala Sims Pg. I'd like to see some of those "ups" coach, and maybe some of those "a lot of games".

RE: 2022 Coach Siddle Call in Show
That's a good point you bring up in the stubborn mentality of what may/may not work. If we all recall, we had a ton of success under Keatts, but there were times where we needed to switch up our defense b/c our press would get beat and our half court defense would get destroyed. That's what would happen in our losses (though they were few), and also in both losses to Duke and VA. I specifically remember the VA game where VA made significant 2nd half adjustments and we didn't and it led to a loss in a game we absolutely should've won.

I know coaches have a hard time switching out of something they coach the players to do and believe it is the recipe. However, the BEST coaches IMO, are able to see when something isn't working and make either quick or longer term adjustments. This Sims at PG seems like one of those for Siddle, but most of us see it as a mistake. To be determined I guess who is right, but right now the stats, win/loss column, and eye test are not doing any favors to Coach Siddle. I agree, that most of his coaching show yesterday with Mike V seemed to display that similar stubborn mindset we knew during the brief Keatts era here, but with some of the same ridiculous buzz word excuses from the McGrath era that infuriated us consistently.

I know I'm rambling here a little bit, but I agree with 70s about the shot selection BS. We have a team loaded with guards that can't shoot free throws. How much better of a shot selection could you possibly ask for there? Seeing that stat and then believing that somehow during the game with defenders moving, crashing, and disrupting our "shot selection" could somehow improve? What is "shot selection" to Coach Siddle? Is that our new PG continuing to be a shot first PG and not get the rest of the team involved? I'm just extremely confused on the entirety of our plan on offense. It just seems like this staff is really lost on a big picture, and if somehow they do have an overall strategy an inability to implement it.

Having watched a couple of games this year n video I can tell you for sure I have no clue what the plan is . Small team, not good defendfers, don't shoot the ball very well and don't stick together as a unit but other than that they seem fine .

When you are this bad on offense it isn't a matter of "shots are going to fall". We have either recruited poorly or we have a bad system. When you are one of the top 10 worst teams on offense in the country, minor changes won't solve the problem.

Well, coach Siddle just verified that he is sticking with Sims as the PG and Shykeim playing off the ball because "he's a natural scorer".

Mind blowing.

I missed the majority of the rest of the call in show this week though. If anyone else has any thoughts/input I'd love to hear it.
