I hope they suffer long term, and that it goes down as a terrible move even years down the road. Short sighted move.

RE: Gary Patterson is OUT at TCU
He was TCU's Bill Yeoman. Yeoman at Houston was an offensive genius, Patterson was a defensive genius.

Both guys led Texas programs from the desert to the major conferences. Both had huge success early in those conferences.

Yeoman had 11 Top 20 finishes over a 13-year stretch. Patterson had 12 Top 25 finishes in 18 years.

Both coaches run off from the programs they built at the end. Patterson lasted ten years in the Big 12. Yeoman 11 in the SWC.

Yeoman is in the College Football HOF. Patterson will be.

Stunning to see this happen mid-season.

Wow TCU hiring SMU's coach. That would be one way to make that rivalry even more heated. I can see the advantage. You remove your rival's successful coach while also bringing that success to your school in only one move. SMU would be faced with finding another coach that could match the success which is tough to replicate. I can only imagine the hate Dykes would get if he made that move.

If I'm SMU, I'm on the phone with Patterson's agent and hoping that Dykes gets offered by TT and TCU.

Patterson played a huge role in TCU attaining P5 status. In any other environment, SMU to TCU would be considered a lateral move. It's really something that shouldn't happen, as they are bitter rivals. There are many more similarities than differences between the two schools. But TCU is now in the Big 12, while SMU is still in the AAC. Therefore, it's a move up that is now possible. The idea of TCU poaching a coach from SMU is incredible but is now possible.

On one hand, a move to TCU from SMU has some big advantages - his family is probably well ensconced in the DFW area, and there would be no disruption to that at all.

OTOH, the Big 12 is going to be very diminished without TX and OU, so it isn't really a "real" move to the P5. He might hold out for a job with a real P-league, if one is available.

TCU should hire Jeff Traylor. Sonny should go back to Lubbock.

Traylor just received a 10 year extension which will take him to retirement. 07-coffee3

Coach Patterson will have his choice of jobs. I could see him getting either the USC or LSU jobs as others have mentioned.

Not sure this is the best move by TCU, you are giving up a coach who is probably top 10 in the country for what?

Patterson needs a sabbatical or a long break at the very least. He shouldn’t be a candidate for a 2022 head coaching job. For that matter, depending on his settlement with TCU, he might have to sit out 2022 in order to collect every dollar on his $6 million/year TCU contract that ran through 2022.

Because it was time to either say goodbye or give him a big fat raise and contract extension, and he's 21-22 the last four years. You generally don't give 21-22 a big fat raise.

It runs through 2024.

Yeah, you're not wrong, maybe things have just run there course. I just don't know how easy it's going to be to bring someone to replicate the kind of success that.

RE: Gary Patterson is OUT at TCU
Coach Patterson's reluctance to upgrade his staff led to our mediocrity the last 4 years. He still knows his stuff, but I believe his stubbornness got the best of him. If he is smart he will just collect his money and do TV. At $6 million a year, I think we figured that more was expected in the win column than what we were getting. We offered for him to finish the season and then work at TCU as an Ambassador, but he declined.

After 20 years, for him to decline the offer suggests some issues with the athletic department that probably don't get settled until they change out the AD.

I genuinely think he is burnt out and needs a break. Interesting enough, he was back to work this Monday morning helping plan for the Baylor game.

This is a good analysis on Patterson, what he accomplished, and why he’s out.

AD Jeremy Donati had a presser today. Basically they made the decision to make a change this weekend, informed Patterson and asked him to stay through the end of the year and honor him in November, but Patterson wasn't having that. Timing of the decision was due to the pressing needs to have someone ready by early signing day (and to get ready for the transfer portal), and they didn't want to conduct a search behind his back in the meantime. Once they decided, felt like they had to inform him of the decision.

I used to be in the "why make a decision midseason" camp but I think there will more and more mid season firings/ resignations in this era of early signing/ transfer portal/ NIL.
