How weird would it be to have the MAC tell MTSU to "Go to Hell!" and invite LaTech (or someone else) instead. Won't happen, but would be interesting.

I don't think it would be a big deal at all. Honestly, this revamped CUSA would be much better for MTSU than going to the MAC. And can MTSU afford to leave millions behind while paying a couple of million to join another conference? I can see MTSU leaving if they had no other options but now they have an option to stay and it probably makes financial sense for them to do so.

Carve out an exception like a you would joke about a spouse's dream date. "Sure honey, you can sleep with Brad Pitt." The MAC doesn't want them leaving for the American or Sun Belt and I think that's fair. If MTSU is holding out for an invitation from the Big 12, I think the MAC could be like "Sure honey, I'll let you go out with 'em" and MTSU would pay 5x the buy-out.

It's 100% fair on the MAC's part. Through all the realignment crap over the years, the MAC has been by far the most stable conference. It's not something I'm signing if I'm WKU or MTSU though. It's just not.

The MAC is basically saying, "come to the MAC because you want to be in the MAC," not because you just want a life raft from where you are.

Brett McMurphy@Brett_McMurphy

Middle Tennessee will remain in Conference USA, but Western Kentucky would still accept bid to join MAC, if offered, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ

I can understand them staying, there's a lot of $$$ they'll be getting in exit & entry fees. Not to mention of those left in fb & bb, they might actually rule the roost for a bit.

That $$$ is beginning to look like $$. The Athletic is reporting the grand total of all exit and entrance fees to be around $18 million. That would be around $3.5-$4.5 million per remaining school. As stated before, that won't come as one lump sum payment, but spread out over several years. That found money will be nice for those schools, but it is certainly not transformational money.

Quote:There’s also the financial component. Conference USA is set to receive more than $18 million by a combination of exit fees from the departing members and entrance fees from new members. That money can be redistributed to the remaining members for a boost. Between that and not paying its own exit and entrance fees, the money played a role in this move.

But they also avoid having to pay those same entrance and exit fees.

Nobody really pays exit fees. You just leave behind payouts. It's not that big of a deal.
