Southern Miss has now had 7, yes 7, QBs take snaps during the season and 6 have thrown a pass. The starter, Trey Lowe, was lost on a kneel down play (OL stepped on his foot and broke it) on the last play of the 1st half of game 2.
The next guy up, Ty Keyes, was a highly regarded athletic true freshman with a good arm. He wasn't ready to play, but was showing some progress. He was injured on the first offensive series of a game at Rice and is done for the season. That was his 4th game, so he can be redshirted.
The player that would have been the #3 QB (Jack Walker) had a hand injury in spring that hasn't healed and he cannot throw the ball. He has taken a few goalline snaps, but is the only one of the 7 that hasn't thrown a pass.
The current starter (walk-on freshman Jake Lange) moved from scout team to #2 the week of the Rice game and was thrown to the wolves. He was on the team because he wants to be a coach and never thought he would play a meaningful down. He is extremely slow and has a weak arm. He tries, but would not play at a MS juco.
The current backup is a freshman transfer (Tee Webb) from Louisville. He has been a huge disappointment.
Another true freshman (Chandler Pittman) got some snaps at QB vs UAB. He was a high school QB that had been playing the slot WR position and getting better and better out of the slot. He ran the wildcat vs UAB and put together a decent drive before a personal foul penalty brought it to a halt. He tore his ACL on that series and is done for the year.
The current #3 QB, who got in at the end vs MTSU, was a student assistant coach that was recently bumped onto the team to have a #3 QB on the roster.
