RE: USM football
Funny thing is, Monken could have gone 6-6 that second year if Mullins didn't get knocked out. You need a good bit of luck, but quick turnarounds are possible.

Preseason, Hall thought the OLine was going to be a strength! Deep at tight end! Hall found out he just has bodies there with questionable talent.

Preseason, I thought we might be thin at receiver and undersized at running back. Not a factor. QB can't get the ball to the receivers we have and Gore has shown to be brilliant when given the smallest opening.

We knew we were thin at QB. I'm not sure why Lowe was running it so much with literally no one ready behind him.

I haven’t seen a USM game this season, but do y’all have a decent QB? Seems like if Hall can fill some gaps with the portal by next year he could have y’all rolling. He’s a good offensive mind.

We are playing #4 and #5 on the preseason depth chart. Our top two (the freshman MS HS POY and a 4-star transfer from WVU) are done for the year. Depth in all areas is thin. He doesn’t have the bodies and talent all over is lacking. It’s a major rebuild. Hopefully by 2023 it is stabilized.

We don't have the storied history you guys do, but Monarch Nation sure feels your pain on rebuilding after a coach left your program in an undesirable position.

I think the Sun Belt will help us both turn a new leaf. I think you guys will be very strong, sooner than later.

I think you are right. We have good people in leadership now, especially at AD, and that’s been shaky since you guys joined CUSA. Two disastrous hires in 2012 and 2016 in football and one in basketball have set us back considerably. This is a pivotal year for our basketball coach, who is a “one of us” hire and has two bad seasons so far. In baseball, we should keep rolling right along. I hope we get a series with you guys this season.

We're not THAT far off. We need a couple of QB and a lot of OLine signees though. LOL!

You seen our line play the the last few years? Jones left it with 8 players on ol then Campbell an ol guy couldn't get it work. Womack had to get 5 new guys to start making headway. We still need more work to get the line better. I think you have a good coach, but it will take some time to fix it. Watch the portal..

I think I heard that within the next couple of weeks RS guys Hall has signed will be getting PT, due to injuries mainly, but to go ahead and get his players playing time so they'll be ready for the next season and the future.

He will play as many as he can for the next four because they can retain their redshirt.

Please forgive me I feel terrible about it but I’m finding some comfort in knowing GS has competition in the ugly contest. For those feeling bullet proof take a look around. What’s worse is this new lineup. It ain’t getn no easier. 03-banghead

Maybe that's it too. I don't claim to be an expert, just post on a message board, ha.

But the theory is, and I think I've posted it is, by time USM moves to the SBC, Hall will have most of his players he's recruited playing, we're done with Hop's guys and we should be able to compete (hopefully) in the Belt.

Southern Miss has now had 7, yes 7, QBs take snaps during the season and 6 have thrown a pass. The starter, Trey Lowe, was lost on a kneel down play (OL stepped on his foot and broke it) on the last play of the 1st half of game 2.

The next guy up, Ty Keyes, was a highly regarded athletic true freshman with a good arm. He wasn't ready to play, but was showing some progress. He was injured on the first offensive series of a game at Rice and is done for the season. That was his 4th game, so he can be redshirted.

The player that would have been the #3 QB (Jack Walker) had a hand injury in spring that hasn't healed and he cannot throw the ball. He has taken a few goalline snaps, but is the only one of the 7 that hasn't thrown a pass.

The current starter (walk-on freshman Jake Lange) moved from scout team to #2 the week of the Rice game and was thrown to the wolves. He was on the team because he wants to be a coach and never thought he would play a meaningful down. He is extremely slow and has a weak arm. He tries, but would not play at a MS juco.

The current backup is a freshman transfer (Tee Webb) from Louisville. He has been a huge disappointment.

Another true freshman (Chandler Pittman) got some snaps at QB vs UAB. He was a high school QB that had been playing the slot WR position and getting better and better out of the slot. He ran the wildcat vs UAB and put together a decent drive before a personal foul penalty brought it to a halt. He tore his ACL on that series and is done for the year.

The current #3 QB, who got in at the end vs MTSU, was a student assistant coach that was recently bumped onto the team to have a #3 QB on the roster.

RE: USM football
Hall was pretty blunt in his post-game radio interview. He stated multiple times that the roster needs to turn over, starting with the 32 players coming in January. He flat-out said, "We're not a bona fide Division 1 program" right now. In regard to a couple of specific plays, he said some guys were seeing it correctly, but just couldn't get it done, and we need players who can get it done, and they either need to figure out how or they won't be here because that's just the business end of things.

What has me worried is all the little things we're just not getting any better at. The punt block was just a pi**-poor effort. 2 blockers just let one MTSU guy run right through them. Your QB can't be dropping the ball every time he gets hit. Maybe the players really are that bad, but the offense should be getting better at something, anything.

The defense has me encouraged. Some of it may be due to the opponents, but they seem to making strides from week-to-week.

Hall is a good football coach. I know it's tough but USM needs to give him a few years to get his culture and guys in place.
