Could Tommy McClelland make a good CUSA Commish if Judy someday leaves?
I'm seeking opinions on whether McClelland would make a great future CUSA Commish.
Personally, I think this is exactly who needs to sit in the chair.
He was the youngest AD in the country when McNeese St hired him as their head man. McNeese happens to be on CUSA's expansion radar and McClelland would certainly be a good facilitator in those discussions.
At Louisiana Tech, McClelland was perhaps the biggest advocate for CUSA.
That's exactly the bold and brash voice the conference needs. Tommy wont take a back seat to the Sun Belch.
He only left to go to the P5. However, for a Commish position, I'd think Tommy McClelland would come back.

I like the guy.

This made me chuckle.
But he’d be the perfect villain for C-USA.

We’d have to get good teams from FCS though.
If you add a bunch of stinkers, then the brashness and confidence looks bad if there is no performance to back it up.

He’s kinda a douche though.

Agree 100%!

Definitely need to get the right teams. 03-lmfao

And IF those teams perform... Tommy would have all the ammunition he would need to be the perfect face for CUSA. 04-cheers

Part of what has made the AAC work is that many people don't like Aresco. 03-lmfao

Someone aggressive with some cahonies that can think outside of the normal conference status quo realm.

If doing a better job than Judy is the criteria that means, oh, about 10 gazillion people could be Commish of CUSA.

Okay...maybe not gazillion, with a "g" (How many zeros in gazillion?), but a bunch! Just about anyone with an ounce of business savvy and some knowledge of college athletics would do better.

Everyone panned Aresco for 1) failing to raid the big12, 2) losing 3 to the big 12, 3) failing to raid the MEC. After taking 6 from CUSA, all seems quiet in AAC.

What happens when Judy successfully recruit top fcs and stabilizes the conference?

Fans of the Suck Belt--mostly fans of Arkansas State and UL-Lafayette--hate him, and other Belch members hate him because those two hate him. He believes in Conference USA's product. He would be the perfect villainous Mike Slive or Greg Sankey type that people always can't stand, unless you're in the $EC.

As much as I disliked him as an AD, he may be just the type person you need in this situation. I always though his negotiating skills lacked though.

She'll be hailed as the first woman FBS commissioner that pulled a conference from the jaws of death and made the league better. That's why she'll get tabbed to be Mike Aresco's successor over the AAC when his extension is up around June 2025? Conveniently the same time Oklahoma and Texas are scheduled to move to the $EC.

We don't hate him, we just think he's an idiot...which being like 6th in command at Vanderbilt makes him qualified as an idiot.

And he'd still do a better job than Judy...

"if Judy someday leaves?"

That move should not be voluntary.

I agree, he should be brought back. He clearly did wonders for La Tech. Look at the strong position they are in right now. Poised to continue their longstanding rivalry with big time programs like Missouri State. Though to be fair Missouri State is much larger of a school.

That wasn't his fault, though. ESPN played a big role in getting the AAC and the Suck Belt to destabilize their media competitor from Conference USA. That's the only thing that happened.
