In the playoff era ND has had 1 loss at the end of the season two times. They made the playoff both times. I can’t wait to hear the, “Notre Dame is a better team now….” bullcrap.
OSU did the same thing in 2014 and 2016. Took early losses and still made the playoffs. They are on track to do it again this year, should they win out.
Bama did it in 2015. But 2017 was the big controversy. Bama took an end of regular season loss and didn't even make the SEC Championship game and they still made the CFP. (and won it all)
You get that leeway when you are a P5 perineal power with a massive following. Them being in it equals more eyeballs and $$$$$$. Wouldn't surprise me one bit to see some sort of shenanigans this year to keep UC out. (if it comes to that)

Last year's NC game had 18.65mm viewers-- the previous year it was 25mm viewers with LSU in the Championship game.
I think people are tired of seeing Bama, OSU, ND, Clemson and Oklahoma in it every year. Outside of Bama and OSU fans, who watched the NC game last year? (Well I did, just to watch OSU lose.)
But yeah-- it'd be nice to see Georgia, UC, sadly OSU (I think the other Big Ten teams are overrated) and even Oregon in the final 4. It'd be a nice change of pace to be honest-- and I think most CF fans would feel the same way.
Honestly, ratings would be better if you didn't have the same Bama, Oklahoma, OSU occupying 3 of the 4 spots again.

Bolded, I agree. Long term, it will undermine the popularity of college football if they stick with a four team beauty contest that seems to rotate a small handful. I have to believe the 12 team playoff will arrive soon. Maybe not soon enough from our perspective though.

Last year may have been an outlier as all of the major sports had a dramatic dip in viewership last year.
Quote:The NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball all saw a dramatic dip in TV viewership, including the NFL playoffs this past weekend (they were down a whopping 22 percent).
https://www.si.com/college/ohiostate/foo...-game-ever
Hopefully we get a chance to prove the theory that people are tired of the same teams and we see a rise in viewership.

It's obviously still way early, but it feels like it's trending toward those being the other three teams - I'm thinking a 2-loss Alabama still gets in over a 1-loss Oklahoma or any 1-loss ACC team, but Oregon would have to lose too.

Alabama is mortal this year. As a matter of fact, of all the teams being bantered about in the CFP scenarios, UC and Georgia are the two MOST solid teams; ALL the other ones have a glaring weakness or two. Alabama seems to lack depth and just doesn't have the same "driven" mentality this year, Ohio State has a glaring lack of defense, Oklahoma's Defense is almost non-existent and the have had QB issues, Oregon has been wildly inconsistent and has shown weakness in their Defense, Iowa has had an anemic Offense and a porous defense.
UC's one glaring issue has been our lack of a consistent PK. That's it. We have shown some inconsistency but have not had to "dig out" of any huge holes. (Have we even been behind by more than a score this entire season?) Our Defense matches our Offense's big-play capability, especially our secondary which many commentators are calling "The Best" in college football...period. God forbid we should actually "click" on both sides of the ball at the same time.
All that has to happen is for everything to click-into-place and this team is eminently capable of beating Georgia, Alabama, or Ohio State by a decisive margin. Even playing "out-of-sorts," we can take Georgia down the stretch.
Yes, we have to "get there" first, but assuming we do, there's not another team outside of Georgia that has the complete package we do.

And here's another thing: UC is different from past G5 teams in that UC is legitimately a top-5 team in terms of NFL talent.
UCF's great 2017 & 2018 teams resulted in 6 NFL draft picks over 3 years. UC will probably have more than that drafted just this year.

Bolded, I agree this is a key distinction. Often, a G5 team runs through their conference opposition with a high powered spread offense and little more or shocks a high major program with trick or gimmicky plays (Boise over Oklahoma). The national commentators who have actually watched UC seem sold on the fact that our team is fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball and has the size and strength to at least be competitive in a CFP game. Even some P5 teams haven't met that standard once selected for the playoff.

RE: 2021 College Football Playoff Rankings
Big CFP implications in The Great Lakes State on Saturday...
Quote:To this point of the college football season, Michigan and Michigan State have done all they can to establish strong position in the Big Ten standings and national rankings. After they meet on Saturday, however, only the winner will have an inside track to a potential berth in the four-team College Football Playoff.
The season’s inaugural playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday (Nov. 2). Come Sunday afternoon, predicting the general order of teams won’t be all that difficult.
Since their debut in 2014, the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings have resembled the Associated Press (AP) poll. Last year, the first CFP rankings had the same top-seven teams, in order, as the AP with the exception of the third- and fourth-ranked teams getting swapped. The same thing happened in 2018. The first CFP rankings of 2019 featured the same top-12 teams as the AP with some minor shuffling.
Michigan currently sits at No. 6 in the AP poll. Michigan State is eighth. The winner of Saturday’s game, a 12:05 p.m. ET kickoff in East Lansing, figures to move up in Sunday’s poll. How much so depends on how other top teams fare.
Whichever team claims the Paul Bunyan Trophy on Saturday could be looking at a top-four playoff ranking come Tuesday.
In addition to facing each other on Saturday, Michigan and Michigan State still have to play Ohio State. Those matchups will take place in the final two weeks of the regular season. One of those teams figures to be the Big Ten East champion and represent the division in the conference championship.
If the Big Ten were to produce an undefeated team, it’s difficult to conceive a scenario in which the league didn’t earn a playoff spot. If it doesn’t produce an undefeated team, there’s no guarantee. In the seven previous years of the playoff, a Big Ten team has been selected five times: Ohio State four times; Michigan State once.
The CFP War of Attrition Continues Saturday

I don't think a 2 loss Bama team gets in. Assuming they lose to GA in SEC championship, they would have 2 losses and no conference championship. They would almost have to be a 4 seed at that point and don't think committee would do GA / Bama rematch in first game.

What does it say about who really "belongs" in the playoffs when UC fans would rather face Oklahoma/Oregon/Wake Forest than Alabama/Ohio State?

It’s says that Ohio State and Alabama recruit at a higher level and would be a more difficult team to beat; however, both have lost games already and have not earned it yet this season yet.

RE: 2021 College Football Playoff Rankings
Two big topics I noticed on ESPN this afternoon/evening:
1) Candy corn is not good candy
2) UC should be#5 or #6 when the first committee rankings come out.
I would say it is amazing the way all the ESPN people talk from the same script, but I've seen the same thing from network news people for years.

If we are not in the CFP ranking top 4 then that may be the first time the #2 team in the AP poll is not in the initial ranking.
