Can you relate?
Part of what makes a Southern Miss fan is an attitude if “tell me I can’t do it and I’ll do it twice and take a photo.” Tough guy mentality.
Do any of you have local sports departments that ignore you? The Jackson Clarion Ledger has a story on State’s coach’s Halloween candy preference but no mention of the sunbelt move. The Hattiesburg America ran a story but called us SMU. The Jackson tv markets show highlights and commentary from State, Ole Miss, Jackson State, and then share our scores. A local weatherman tweeted weather forecasts for sec games a few weeks back and ignored our game. He works for a Hattiesburg tv station.
Our fans come despite the lack of media love. It’s crazy the money football games being in to the Burg despite lack of hype.
Can any of my new family feel me? Or do you have proper coverage in your area? Biloxi usually treats us better than Hattiesburg or Jackson to be honest.
What about your media? Please tell me you get local love better than the Nasty Bunch.

Been over 20 years I’ve lived on Mobile, so I can’t speak on that. But I do live in BHM and I can tell you UAb gets the same treatment you guys do. They are after Alabama and Auburn, and on local radio media, they get maybe 10 minutes a week total. I think there are times Jax St May May get more media in BHM over UAb, and JaxSt is an hour east of BHM.

Our hometown newspaper all but ignores us. The writer that recently left had a feud with the previous administration so even when there was good news for ULM he spent half the article writing about anything negative he could include. As of a few weeks ago he's now covering LSU.

I don't watch a lot of local news... but I know Fox 10 mentions us and NBC 15 was covering us as well. CBS 5 has a history of ignoring us so my viewing preferences is to never watch them. With that said they were covering the Jags but the reporter that was covering the Jags recently moved to Phoenix I believe.

The Sports Director at WKRG (CBS) Randy Patrick is a big Alabama fan so he avoids the Jags. Remember the Alabama fan that teabagged the drunk passed out LSU fan in Krystal in NOLA following the National Championship between the two? Randy Patrick's son was in that video. In fact, he was the one that was originally trying to pull his junk out to teabag that guy until his girlfriend stopped him. And Randy Patrick is his dad... Let him cover the Tide.

I miss John Edd Thompson, he represented USA well in media, even as a weather guy. After all, he gave us our song.

Dave Shultz on 105.5 does a good job of giving us some coverage along with the rest of the Sun Belt. I think the Cajuns might recognize his name. Also 99.5 is dedicated to Jag sports. If it was Randy's call though we'd still be at Sadd. Went out of his way propping up that rust bucket with his fellow Bammer homer that attempts to manage that dump.

Cajuns fans are sort of hot and cold on Shultz. Some felt he never gave the Cajuns enough love. Plus the station he worked for had more LSU lean than UL, as opposed to 1420 which is the opposite. So by association many felt that he didn’t like the Cajuns.

I will give him credit where it’s due though. Towards the end of the Farmer and Hudspeth eras he did do a good job of holding UL’s feet to the fire and asking tough questions. Questions that I think many UL faithful had and ones that the 1420 personalities and local beat writers never had the courage to ask; I assume out of fear of losing access?

When you see somebody wearing Southern Miss attire, that’s the sports equivalent of a prison tattoo. It’s an announcement to all who see: “Do not test me. You will not win, for I am a hardened motherf***er who’s seen some sh*t.”

RE: Can you relate?
Can't speak for local coverage of App since I haven't lived in a "local" market for App in decades, but I can speak to my perception of local coverage of JMU and ODU in central VA. I think they get it pretty good. I rarely ever watch local news, but local sports radio does a decent job. One local station* has a whole show "Around the Commonwealth" (I think its called) devoted to all the local teams - not just the Hokies and Hoos - with player and coach interviews by everyone from VT to VMI. U of Richmond and VCU get almost equal coverage to UVA and VT, especially during basketball season, with JMU probably 5th billing, followed by the city's 2 D2 HBCUs, Liberty, then ODU. Of The other state schools-W&M, Mason, VMI and Longwood - get very light attention unless something notable happens (VMi recent and unexpected SoCon success, for example). But they all get more attention than I was used to App and the other NC schools getting back when I lived in NC where it was "All Heels All Day".

The recent moves have been getting a fair bit of coverage. Generally, the sentiment has been positive, but a lot of it oddly has centered on how Liberty might react to it all.

*Multiple personalities on that station in the past have referred to an "Appy State" over the years so I probably should listen to it.

I live close to Raleigh NC and all of their sports coverage is ACC, Its either NC State, UNC and Duke. It really only bothers me when APP has a big win such as the other night and there is practically no mention of it. Charlotte and Winston Salem does have occasional coverage of APP. Also, on the Raleigh side of the state its virtually impossible to find any APP gear. You can go into a store and find gear for Schools from other states like Clemson, Alabama and LSU but no App gear, that drives me crazy.

LOL. Come to Arkansas. stAte can teach you about how an entire state was brainwashed by the use of the media. They were manipulated (along with our legislature) by a fellow called Frank Broyles. Jonesboro has long felt they had more in common with Memphis and west Tennessee than the rest of the state.

WNSP does a decent job covering USA.

I know Pat Greenwood, director of multi-media USA, he has a lot of connections from his time at WPMI and he's pushing hard for more coverage. He absolutely loves his job and his excitement has got to be good for the program.

We actually get more (at minimum, just as much) local TV coverage in the Savannah market than UGA does.

We have some friends of the University working in key media positions.

You're coming into a football conference which by most general public perspective is the bottom of the NCAA barrel and is made up of a bunch of teams that nobody else wanted because we were too small, not well-known brands, located in rural tiny towns across the southeast...yet for some reason or another we've managed to position ourselves to be quite possibly the best G5 conference out there by producing on-field products that are good, having loyal fanbases, and massive chips on our shoulders.

You'll fit right in I'm sure.

RE: Can you relate?
We definitely share attention in our region of the state with UGA, but we get a very large share all things considered. Statesboro is all in on Georgia Southern obviously, but there’s still a market for UGA news and updates on the side. When UGA played in the national title game a few years ago, the Statesboro Chamber of Commerce decorated their building in red and black and posted on social media in support of the Dawgs and they were given MAJOR grief from the community about it.

In Savannah, at worst we split media attention between us and UGA 50/50. Every news station/paper has a section dedicated to GS coverage. We also get a decent amount of attention in Augusta. In the rest of the state, we only really get covered if we do something noteworthy which has been few and far between recently.

It’s especially tough in Atlanta with such an oversaturated market, but our alumni base in Atlanta is huge. We’ve definitely made pushes to get converge more in Atlanta to connect with our fan base there, but it was a lot easier before the inventions of Georgia State, Kennesaw State, and Mercer.

Overall, we get a great amount of coverage. More than most of our G5 peers and we’ve been able to carve out a good territory in South Georgia. It helps being the only D1 school within a 2 hour radius and the only FBS school in a 3 hour radius.

In Lafayette, we have three tv stations, two newspapers that give us coverage and a pair of all sports stations. Being 50 miles away, LSU gets plenty of coverage on all platforms.

But the Cajuns get more than their share. And Cajun fans complain constantly about what they don't have. They need to walk about ten miles in the shoes of some conference mates.
