Social Media Brand Power
This is pretty neat. Since it’s the year 2021, social media does matter as it pertains to brand power. Not sure if this was ever shared but the data is interesting. Note these numbers reflect 2020 interactions across IG, Twitter and Facebook across Athletic Departments.

Figured it might be relavant with all the recent discussions about what schools should be in what conference and why.

More data here for specific sports, TikTok interactions and YoY changes. Coastal exploded between 2019 and 2020 for obvious reasons.

ODU’s main Athletics Department social media mainly reposts stuff from the individual sports’ pages. And that not real consistently. ODU AD has 15k, baseball has 14k, football has 57k and curiously basketball has less than 1,000. I think they had to switch accounts not too long ago though.

Yeah. The basketball twitter got shut down for copyright violations for some music.

Found another link from them that has all D1 schools and JMU sits nicely at 92. Looks like in this data, from July, only a couple are ahead of us from the rest of Sun Belt.

I think we'd be right around that mid 90 to 100 or so rank if we didn't lose our twitter accounts that were shut down. We've seen a HUGE increase in social media quality and presence this year with some new hires. I've been really pleased with what I'm seeing.

This category is the most important and damn impressive:

https://twitter.com/SkullSparks/status/1...4471845890

For a university being the most popular for prospective students and student athletes is paramount.

Notable that it’s JUST tiktok and JUST one month, but great company none the less.

If I recall, we were an early adopter to tiktok and were among the first college football teams to have an account. Certainly a contributing factor.

That is nice. I am feeling super obsolete since I don't have tik tok.

Just searched and doesn't look like ODU has a presence there at all. At least not in a quick search. Other than some students hashtagging stuff.

Edit: Never mind, found one for the official university. Doesn't look too active - just 778 followers. Mostly seems like some marketing majors just goofing around. =]

Those are followers not engagements or views. FOLLOWERS of the schools account.

App State was not an early adopter of TikTok the account has really only been actively managed over the last 4 months.

And again engaging old people on Facebook or middle-aged people on Instagram and Twitter is certainly good for alumni bases and possible donations but this is where recruiting is notice the schools on this list... RECRUITING IS TIKTOK

Just went through App State’s Tik Tok and they’ve got some fantastic content on there. Bravo to whoever is running that account. One video has a little over 3M+ views and it’s got me so hyped to get down to Boone.

It is a student who runs the account. He's a part of the football video team.

Those Skull Sparks numbers have lots of flaws in them. While a good gauge, should not be taken as the final word. Not all interactions are created equal and you’ll never convince me that TikTok numbers are accurate.

Speaking of social media, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed just now and came across this.

Now thats leadership.

Judy, what should we do?!?!?! We’re on the brink of collapse.

Quick, update the FB cover photo.

TikTok is the Chinese devil platform.

On a serious note, I expect our new president will be Brad Smith, former CEO of Intuit and a guy that has lived in Silicon Valley the last several decades. My guess is we will see a modernization in the way Marshall does many things including social media.

Please take this as constructive criticism, and not to rehash your budget again, but you are getting what you can with what you have. The Cajuns are not there yet, but it's amazing the progress we've made over the last ten years when the administration finally began buying in and we put capable people in charge. Your fans/boosters may have to take matters into your own hands. You are seeing what a small amount of attention can do to your football program right now. Imagine if this continues. You guys are second in the west and looking like a bowl game is in the works this year. Guys, you never led a game all of last year. All this because a few people stepped up.

When I was living in western NC , I was involved with a guy who created a museum there that really was world class, but the guy was not a "social person." A few of us were friends with him and really liked the guy. We approached him to help him with outreach and marketing. It actually worked real well and his museum got much better press when we ran interference. We did this pro bono knowing because we were passionate about his product and we wanted our community to thrive. This is no different than your university. Possibly a few of you, maybe some with media backgrounds, should take the lead and at least approach the university and offer some help. It may be the spark that's needed to at least bring you up a bit. You might be surprised about what resources are out there waiting for someone to take the first step.

Good luck!
