RE: Basketball Questions?
not concerned about Emoni, but the Lawson's and Nolley are concerns. Penny watched the Lawson's with Tubby, he is not going to tolerate pouting with them or Nolley. If there continues to be a problem keep them off the bench and out of uniform. If it continues keep them out of practice, then if they enter the portal they can only blame themselves. Coach Brown will probably be able to prevent this, it should not be a concern of Penny's.

Sounds like they are sitting on transcripts? Hope it's not another Evansville/Deandre situation.

RE: Basketball Questions?
It sounds to me like the decision to play EB at the two is causing some concern over playing time for some.

He probably will play some point, but there was a recent CA story where Penny was quoted as saying that based on practices he'd probably be spending more time at the 2.

RE: Basketball Questions?
I have contended for some time now on the board that Lomax might HAVE to play more at point than some posters expect/want because he is a true point guard, is experienced and is a winner. Bates is not a true lead guard. So it's possible Lomax will be the primary point guard and Bates will start on the wing with Lester, with Bates as the No. 2 point guard when Lomax rests. Regardless, AB will play major minutes.
Now if Lomax plays, say, 25 minutes at the PG, that means Nolley will play fewer minutes. It's a numbers crunch.
If Nolley gets frustrated and leaves the program (and I sure hope he does not because I strongly respect his game), that will provide more playing time for Earl Timberlake, Josh Minott and John Camden. And, yes, I expect Camden to play some because he can do one important thing extremely well: shoot threes.
I do anticipate at least one player departing during the holiday break (or before). There is so much talent on this team and only so many minutes to go around.
The following players are highly unlikely to quit for various and obvious reasons:
Lomax
Dandridge
Williams
Quinones
Hardaway
Bates
Duren
Harris
Beyond those players ... any of the seven others (Timberlake, Nolley, the two Lawsons, Big Sam, Minott and Camden) could transfer. We hope that everybody is happy and stays — and contributes. But we have to be realistic. On that note, I don't expect any more than two of those seven to leave. And I would not be surprised if only one transferred. Similarly, I would be surprised if at least one did not quit.

Most of these players past the names of Duren, Bates, Williams and Lester HAD to know that they would be coming off the bench and also that they would be a stacked team that could legitimately play 12 guys (Penny recently stated he would like to see mainly a 9-man rotation).
This is big boy stuff. You have to be all in or not and I doubt all of them didn’t know this

RE: Basketball Questions?
I've been thinking about the starting lineups and the best way to utilize the talent. As everyone knows, having this many talented players the risk for transfers is always a possibility. My biggest concern is keeping Landers Nolley II happy.
With Nolley as your leading scorer from last season- I think it's important to be consistent and keep him as your starting SG with Bates starting at the SF.
Lester would be the 1st player off the bench.
With Lester being the ultimate team player, I don't think he would mind being the 6th man off the bench.
The lineup below gives you a good blend of freshmen talent with experience.
Starters:
PG - Alo (Experience PG)
SG - Nolley (Experience SG)
SF - Bates (Top 5 NBA pick, natural 2/3)
PF - Williams (Experience PF)
C - Duren (Top 5 NBA pick)
Bench:
PG - Timberlake
SG - Lester (1st player off the bench and Heart and Soul of this team)
SF - Minott (Future NBA ?)
PF - C. Lawson
C - Dandridge
That leaves: J. Hardaway, Camden, Sam O, Tyler Harris, J Lawson

RE: Basketball Questions?
I never understand the argument for Alo to start at PG because he is “experienced” as a true PG. We have literally three fulll years of data showing us he is mediocre at the position - experienced does not mean good

RE: Basketball Questions?
But Lester is the teams best man to man defender and all around glue guy…..ie Antonio Anderson-like
Why would you put him on the bench?

Especially since he volunteers to check the opponents best offensive threat. Penny is defensive coach at heart. He can't bring Lester off the bench.

He is one of the best rebounders and the 2nd best shooter at volume on the team.

I agree... he will probably get more minutes than the starters most nights anyway. Nolley is your leading scorer from last year and don't want to lose that scoring punch.

Ok, you bringing Nolley off the bench? What's your lineup?

I would love to see starting E Bates. Nolley, LQ, Williams, Duren. But who will provide shooting and scoring off the bench? Alo, Minott, Dandridge, C Lawson, Timberlake?
I don't like Alo starting period. I would start J Lawson before start Alo. He works best off the bench. I think Nolley could be a great scorer off the bench or him being the starter to run things and provide scoring with the 2nd unit. Play Nolley with your East unit of Alo, Nolley, Dandridge, C Lawson and Minott. However, from what I see with Timberlake I don't want him as a starter.
If Alo starts then, it's Alo, LQ, Bates, Williams, Duren. Nolley is first off the bench and you need his scoring with 2nd unit especially until the freshmen get up to speed.
