They probably meant 24 Freshmen "of which" 12 were "true" Freshmen ... but I agree; the quality of the Tiger beat writers leaves a lot to be desired .... One of the reasons for the demise of daily newspapers ...

Aside from the inadequate beat writers, their copy editors do an absolutely terrible job of proofing and correcting spelling and tense errors. Just a horrible news outlet.

Yep. It's a blight on journalism in general, on all kinds of outlets. I hate that it is so prevalent that I am actually starting to get numb to it.
