I know Alex very well. He spent two years at ODU “touring the country’s bands” under the guise of “let’s figure out what kind of band ODU should have” only to try to clone the place he came from. The ODU marching band is pure cringe in my opinion, due to its leadership.

The sign of a poor director is the copycat. High school bands do it all the time by taking from drum corps. The result is always cringe worthy.
For some this may come out as offensive, but outside of drum corps, the best bands out there are actually high schools. Why? Well some of them are run by drum corps staffs and some have incredible sources of income coming from parents and donors.
In college, band is supposed to be fun. The biggest mistake I made from coming out of drum corps was to try to emulate that. It was a big mistake. My second stint as section leader was far better.
The best groups out there are ones that don’t steal from others, but rather create their own identity.

Yeah well only speaking from being it, the friendships I had are life long in some cases and just being part of something with like minded ppl was fun. I got a scholarship and was a section leader for a few years. Plus I really did it so I could do pep band for basketball.

I’m sure. It’s not a critique on the participants. They aren’t in control of the choices of leadership.

Yep. Parents, encourage your kids to do band. I can't even begin to explain all the amazing experiences, connections, life-long friendships (and marriages!) that have resulted from high school and college band in my family alone.

I had no interest in music or band. Parents (mom) made me do it. Eventually it turned out I loved it afterall.

I wondered this as well (and got VERY excited about this possibility - another pro in the FBS column)

While I haven't posted on the SBC boards, until an official announcement is made, I have been perusing them, and remember reading that it's something like on average the bands travel to two away games.

I’d really like to see other bands come to Bridgeforth.

Me too, and I would love to see the MRDs at ODU, Marshall & CCU. I've already seen them at Appy.

I do wonder how their bands will compare with the likes of RU & W&M.

LOL, you call those bands? I guess 5 people playing music together meets the technical definition of a band

Hope to see some of the other bands come to BFS and the MRD's head to other games also.

I remember in 2008 when NCCU came to BFS and they brought their band, what a great halftime and postgame show with both bands. They were great!!

Believe Troy is the only SBC school whose band travels regularly to away games. Suspect JMU might not want to hear the expense of sending the MRDs away that frequently. Would be great though.

Well, at least he's consistent. Gotta give him that at least.

As a marching band alum, I absolutely get that marching band isn't for everyone. What bothers me is when people say it's easy or that it takes zero athletic ability.
As a drum corps alum, I take BIG issue with that.

Do college bands compete in competitions like High Schools?

If so, how many competitions do the MRD's participate in a year?
