RE: Let’s Talk Marching Bands
I think UNC Central was the last band to come to BFS. Might have been another after them but I am not sure. Tis nice to see other bands come hopefully we will see some in the near future. UNC Central did put on a good show.
One of the things that I was very disappointed in several years ago was when the Dukes went to Norfolk State for a game and it got called after the 1st quarter due to a real bad and long lived T storm and deluge. Really was looking forward to seeing the NSU band.

UMass had a pretty decent band in the 90s.
I’d say so. UMass was the second FCS college band to win the Sudler Trophy. Of course, the MRDs were the first.
To those unfamiliar with the Sudler, a college band can only receive it one time.

It is kinda cool.....but i totally get it......it is a rather big expense for a regular season game.

Interesting to me. Per the link - "The MRD's are open to all majors, and to students from local community colleges, and attract membership from students of almost every field of study."
I did not know this.

Yep, they are open the students at Blue Ridge Community College as well as Eastern Mennonite University. I’m not sure how many from those two schools participate in the MRDs.
Quote: STUDENTS ATTENDING Blue Ridge Community College or Eastern Mennonite University:
If you are attending BRCC or EMU and want to be a part of the JMU Marching Royal Dukes:
Complete the MRD MEMBER FORM (above)

Many people think the MRDs is a School of Music thang…and many music majors are involved, but the vast majority of MRDs are not music majors.

No, I actually saw with my own eyes some of their band members humping our field. So, the ignorance is your own.
And, I don't care if they were black, Chinese, or left-handed gay Martians. They were humping our field. It was an observation. No racism whatsoever.

RE: Let’s Talk Marching Bands
It comes across as racism when it’s mocking the style choices of exclusively black marching bands. I’m willing to assume it’s ignorance, not racism. Just read the post, my friend. I gave you an out. Not my problem if you don’t like being called out for your ignorance about the activity.

I doubt they'll be marching all 540, but who knows?
Says a lot though: interest in the MRDs is higher than ever.

It's a trip year - The MRDs are travelling to Italy Dec 27 through Jan 4 2023. They'll participate in the New Years Day parade in Rome.
It's the 50th anniversary year too. Lots to celebrate for the Marching Royal Dukes

I forgot this was the trip year.
This year is definitely going to be a special one. Making a big statement as well for year one in the FBS.
I wonder how many more joined or choosing to stay due to us going FBS.

I heard that they have/had to move students off of Sousa to other instruments because they don’t have enough sousas for everyone that wants to play it.

Wow.
If I had to guess, a lot are probably moved to baritone perhaps?
I am a trumpet player, but there's nothing like a band with a strong low brass section.

Lol, when I marched, a number of oboe and bassoon music ed majors “marched tuba” but did not make many musical contributions. Great to see their numbers up. Is this the biggest MRDs ever?

Yep, previous high was 535 in 2018 when they marched in the Macys parade.

RE: Let’s Talk Marching Bands
My younger daughter when she was in the MRDs (2011-2015) she was a bassoon player and she played clarinet. She did actually play as we had her take some lessons the summer before her freshman year so she would be able to contribute.

No doubt there are many who do that. I just remember the tubas had a good number of folks who were…”less motivated”.
