Perhaps CUSA could build up a handful of HBCUs. I think such a diverse conference would be intriguing to a lot of recruits in those football-rich states.
CUSA has a timely opportunity for a reimagined conference going forward along the Gulf Coast.
Add 6 SWAC schools from the Gulf Coast states: Texas Southern (TX), Grambling (LA), Alcorn (MS), Jackson State (MS), Alabama A&M (AL), Florida A&M (FL)
to
The "CUSA 5 + 1"... NMSU (NM), UTEP (TX), Louisiana Tech (LA), MTSU (TN), WKU (KY), and Florida International (FL)...
That mixture of CUSA + SWAC would create a unique conference that would give it instant footing as a true "CUSA".. I actually think in an age where athletes are taking back their power, this dynamic could create a new league that stands out (in a good way).
All of the HBCU brands would immediately become much stronger due to the exposure and their increased visibility in the best recruiting footprint in the country.
All of the CUSA schools would benefit. Integrating more conferences with HBCUs was always the next step. CUSA should lead that charge and reshape its narrative.
The remaining SWAC could recover by uniting with the MEAC.
IMO, these schools provide CUSA with a great new identity; and the narrative changes from CUSA as a "Dead Man Walking".
IF MTSU and WKU leave, then CUSA + NMSU should just do a full merger with the SWAC and go to 16. The footprints just overlap so perfectly.
The bands at half-time could be a focus of CUSA Saturdays.
All of the brands (from CUSA to the SWAC) look like they'd fit well.
