Just in case anyone is curious. Based on historical performance, below is how everything will shake out. New Sun Belt includes Southern Miss & Marshall jumping. Current American excludes Houston, UCF & Cincinnati.

Weighted 10 year football average (FPI):
New American: 87.8
New Sun Belt: 91.0
New CUSA: 106.3

Current American: 78.37
Current Sun Belt: 92.5
Current CUSA: 100.86

Weighted 10 year basketball average (KenPom):
New American: 157.3
New Sun Belt: 195.3

Texas is plenty big enough and produces enough talent and they are a fun town. I think their recruiting will improve at least to not be an anchor, perhaps even to contend. I really think their athletics program and university are about to take off

UTSA has plans to build a new 10,000 seat basketball arena. That should be a BIG program booster. The Roadrunners are spending lots of money on athletics.

I see UTSA making the same journey we are. Two excellent mid-size cities, great potential, commitment to doing well. I hope they are serious about being competitive in hoops, would make a great road trip

I don’t consider 1.4 million with a 2.6 million MSA a mid size city

Yeah but that’s INCREDIBLY misleading. Metropolitan San Antonio is #24 largest city. Roughly like a Nashville sized metro.

City only population is how you have Nashville, Jacksonville FL, Austin TX, Columbus OH, Charlotte, Indianapolis, OKC, El Paso, Louisville, Fresno, ALL larger than Atlanta. I don’t think anyone would consider Atlanta the 38th largest city in America.

That's why there is the city population and metro population; both are accurate and serve different purposes.

Inner city pop declining, metro grows. Folks escaping policies of folks they elected. Then theyll vote the same way on the city outskirts. When folks leave the inner city, it’s hard to gain them back for events when they have this perception of the city they left still engrained in their brain.

In some instances, like governing structure of city government. Ability to pool incentive packages easier. Less government fragmentation and duplication of services. But like we see in Birmingham, tons of Hoover, Trussville, Pelham, Alabaster, Bessemer, Gardendale, Irondale, etc. people come to games at UAB. Donate to program. Live within 15 minutes of the school. Contribute heavily, work there, etc. Downtown Birmingham employment is somewhere around 85% occupied by people who do not live in the city limits of Birmingham. When San Antonio annexes much of the suburbs into the city limits, as Nashville has done, it means absolutely nothing different when compared to other 2ish million population metro areas. It’s still a mid-sized city. There isn’t the employment base, the tax base, etc. of a top 10 city. San Antonio isn’t even close to being in the conversation with Atlanta, DC, DFW, Houston, NYC, LA, Chicago, Philly, Boston. Not even close. It’s on par with other midsize cities like Denver, Nashville, Cincinnati, Orlando. As Alabama goes, do we really think Montgomery and Birmingham are within a couple hundred people of each other? No, lol.

Metro population is really the only thing that matters.
