He’s currently ranked 4th in Ohio D2 at 215 and received special mention at 182 on the national level. He finished 4th (195lbs) at the USA Freestyle Central Regional to make the Ohio team that competed in Fargo at Nationals this year.

Riley Ucker (285) from Dublin Coffman has signed. He’s a 4x state qualifier and is ranked as the #29 heavyweight in the country. Although he did not place at the state tournament in 2021, he’s had success on the national level in both greco and freestyle tournaments. [/align]

Regarding our performance at the Appalachian State tournament last weekend, we faced a lot of quality wrestlers but managed to hold our own. Other than a close loss in his initial match, Munguia destroyed his next 3 opponents at 157. Is Ferree the answer at 174? He beat 2 solid wrestlers from App State, one of whom is mentioned in the top 33, losing to #7 from Duke in the final. Before transferring to KSU, he was injured at Campbell so there’s not a lot of information for his college years. However, he was a two-time Ohio State placer, taking eighth in 2018…Compiled a 98-15 record over his final two seasons for Austintown-Fitch High School, including a 53-7 mark as a senior. Fingers crossed.

8th recruit signed this morning. Riley Ucker (HWT) from Dublin Coffman HS. Looks like he has wrestled a lot of matches out of state in tournaments and placed very well in some of them. Seems like another good get for Andrassy/staff. Joins his teammate Mitchell Broskie in this class.

Berthold is on the KSU Football roster and wrestling roster, so not sure when or if he will start wrestling in matches this season? Cover is the starter right now.

9th recruit signed, Ryan Aquilani from Bridgeport PA (Malvern HS) 141/149lbs.

10th recruit signed, Ethan Barr from Hickman MO 125lbs/133lbs.

Navy Classic this Sunday and then a week off and then the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas NV.

Najee Hall will make his Kent State debut this weekend now that he is healthy, so they will have their entire starting lineup in action. It will be interesting to see where KSU finishes vs where Cleveland State, Ohio U, Bloomsburg, & Lock Haven @ the Navy Classic since they are the MAC teams participating and it is a few weeks into competition.

Cleveland State was picked 2nd, Edinboro 4th, Ohio U 8th, KSU 10th, Lock Haven 11th, & Bloomsburg 13th in the preseason MAC poll.

A few things to mention, Najee Hall was unranked @ 165lbs and Enrique Munguia was unranked @ 157lbs and they should both finish in the top 4 of their weight classes. I also think that Louis Newell is better than 8th @ 141lbs and Michael Ferree is better than 8th @ 174lbs. (MAC preseason)

Interesting to see Deandre Nassar is ranked 2nd @ 184lbs (MAC preseason), because he was @ Kent State to start his career but couldnt beat out McCracken and McNally @ 174lbs and 184lbs.

Decent performance at the Navy Classic (12 teams including Kent St). Michigan St(129) and Ohio (122) finished first and second with Kent (82.5) in 5th. Ferri and Komara finished second and Fenton third. Cleveland St. did not participate. Assuming the website is accurate they must have pulled out since Kent website had them in the tournament. Kent finished well ahead of fellow MAC schools (sorta of) Edinboro, Lock Haven and Bloomsburg. Even spell check doesn’t like Edinboro and Bloomsberg.

Lockett @ 165, McCracken @ 184, & Bates @ 197 didn’t wrestle. With those 3 they could have made a run @ 1st.

It looks like Berthold hurt his knee when practicing with the Kent State football team, so I don't think he will be able to wrestle this season for KSU.

McCracken and Bates will wrestle in Vegas this weekend. Lockett should be back on January 5th for the Lake Erie Storm tournament and wrestle from there on.

10 Wrestlers in the recruiting class thus far and most look to be very strong. Having a 2nd assistant coach and a grad assistant has definitely helped Andrassy/Mitcheff with a lot of things.

11th recruit signed. Brian Finnerty from Jefferson Hills PA 184lbs/197lbs.

Tough weekend in Las Vegas NV @ Cliff Keen. It will be interesting to see how KSU bounces back this weekend @ the Cleveland State Open.

12th recruit committed. Reece Goss from Paintsville KY @ 141lbs/149lbs.

1st time this season that all 10 starters will be in the lineup. Quad tomorrow @ NIU with South Dakota State & Harper College competing vs Kent State.

Then Kent State travels to Edinboro next Tuesday for a dual match. After that it is Cleveland State @ home on January 7th.

We showed up to wrestle today! Even in the matches we lost, there was no shame in the effort.

After defeating former coach Hill, we will have a shot at Moore and Musser when we take on CSU. It’ll be a good one and more competitive than Edinboro.

Sundays meet against Cleveland St. postponed.

13th recruit signed, Pablo Castro IV from Louisville OH. 133lbs/141lbs wrestler in college.

Kent State Wrestling lost to University of Maryland (14-25) and University of Oklahoma (7-32), but they beat University of Tennessee of Chattanooga (18-13).

They have Buffalo @ home on Sunday @ 2pm and then Cleveland State @ home next Thursday @ 7pm. Then they go to Clarion and Hofstra @ Clarion PA @ noon on Sunday, January 30th. It will be interesting to see how they do in those 4 matches. They are 3-4 on the year in duals thus far.

Per the website Buffalo edged Kent St. today by a score of 27-9. Thank God we weren’t routed. Their point was there were 4 OT matches with Buffalo winning 3 of the 4. Only McCracken won an OT match for Kent. Of the other 6 matches we lost 4 two by pins. Ferri won 7-5 and Newell 3-2.

First coaches poll released today. Only Kent wrestler is Jake Ferri at 125 ranked 28th. Ex-Kent St. wrestler Andrew McNally ranked 18th in 174 weight class. He is now at Wisconsin.

Beat MAC foe Cleveland St 25-9 yesterday. Won 7 out of 10 matches which included a forfeit victory by Newell at 141. Other winners by decision Fenton (133), Pryhocki (157), Chrisman (165), Ferre (174), McCracken (a major at 184) and Cover (HW). one of our better matches of the year.
