RE: If the AAC invites Buffalo, what does the MAC do?
(10-18-2021 01:24 PM)Stugray2 Wrote: Why does anyone think the AAC would have any interest in Buffalo? They check off only one of the six main check boxes of the American. There is not a single report of any interest, and there is none.
But playing the game, that lightening strikes, the response of the MAC should be to ask Marshall and James Madison about interest in joining. North Dakota State is another direction to try. But primarily ask for a waiver form the NCAA like the AAC got on round robin, then support divisionless football proposals that are likely to pass in the coming years. 11 works fine with 8 football games and as many basketball as you want even 20.
Why would they have interest in anyone else? They have one of the best basketball/football records in recent years of any MAC, CUSA or SB school (none of the good football SB school have basketball success).

RE: If the AAC invites Buffalo, what does the MAC do?
I think Buffalo should be A LOT higher on the AAC list than what people have mentioned.
The main reason UAB is so high on everyone's expected list because they're pretty good in football, pretty good in basketball and have a good sized market. That's also Buffalo.
There's schools who've been much better in football, like App State, La Tech, or Marshall, who are in tiny markets. There are schools in better markers (Charlotte, Rice) who haven't been good in football, or haven't been good in basketball in 20 years in Charlotte's case.
If the AAC is going to build, they need teams from all three categories.

Too far out of footprint. If the MAC were to go that route, there are better options closer to the footprint.
Such as?

Have the Redbirds shown a desire to move up?

But, if current reporting is to be believed, at the very least didn't end up among the top six in that list.

Maybe they saw the list and said no thanks.

More likely their leadership likes being in a bus league more than flying teams to Tulsa, San Antonio, and Dallas. They don't want to be in a situation where they need huge deficits to keep up with the Jones like you would in the American.

There was never a national media report on them going to the AAC unlike UAB, Charlotte, FAU, UNT and UTSA. Rice was considered out of the running by some outlets.
All this insistence on UB was not in touch with reality.
I would have more likely expected Georgia St, ODU, App or Marshall snagging a 5th or 6th spot in the AAC.

UB was a better fit when Cincinnati and UConn were still in the conference. I don’t think chasing the incremental improvement of the new AAC moves any needles in Western New York. The Bulls are better off winning in a regional conference.

I imagine they never asked to join. Aresco stated that he was only interested in folks that seeked the American out.
