JK will give Bloom one more year. For four reasons. First, I do believe the administration believes they have the right guy despite the sentiment here otherwise. But they can't be tone deaf to the results. Second, probably a belief that with so many coaching jobs available, that getting a top-tier person is unlikely given the competition is more than normal circumstances. Thirdly, someone has to fund the buyout. And last but not least, there is a new President coming in and the AD might want to wait and see where the winds are blowing before charting a new course with a new person if the wind could change in a year (good or bad) with more/less resources at his disposal.

So in the short-term, Vegas would probably handicap the odds like this.

<1% chance that Rice wins a C-USA championship or beats any of its P5 competition.

10% chance Bloom pulls a rabbit out of the hat next year and has >= six wins and goes to a bowl. That likely gives him an extension whether the program is really better or not.

89.99% we see a repeat of this year and he is let go. But as you state, it will screw-up recruiting for multiple years as more people are recruited for a pro-style system that is short-lived, some recruits stay away b/c of the uncertainty, and existing players decide to hit eject button in the portal.

We all know the handful of Rice players that could play for P5 schools. If several of those bail, and Bloomgren is retained, next season could be particularly brutal on the field and in the (empty) stands.

The only difference is that while Bragga was a fish out of water at Rice, totally out of his element, Bloomgren fits the Rice culture, but has woefully underperformed....and has shown absolutely no sign of progress.

That depends on how you define the "Rice culture." I don't think he is a good fit for the Rice culture, at least not athletically. Rice is located in Texas, and therefore strong Texas ties are and should be a strong part of the Rice culture. Bloomgren came here with virtually none, and has done very little to build or enhance such ties. If Bailff was too prone to limit his recruiting field by staying within Texas, Bloomgren has been too prone to limit his recruiting field by not concentrating heavily enough on Texas.

Let's look at some recent football coaching successes, both at Rice and elsewhere in Texas:

Successes:
Fred Goldsmith had many Texas connections from his time at Arkansas, added some Texas HS coaches to his staff, and also had some Florida connections that he utilized.
Ken Hatfield had many Texas connections from his time at Arkansas, and also added some Arkansas connections as well as connections around the country from HS coaches who ran the wishbone/flexbone.
Matt Rhule came to Baylor from the northeast, with no Texas connections to speak of, and immediately hired Joey McGuire and Dave Wetzel to give him Texas credibility; after a disastrous start, losing to Liberty, he built a very competitive program in a hurry.
Gary Patterson had some west Texas credibility from his time at New Mexico, added Texas credibility while DC at TCU, and took over as HC at TCU when Franchione left.

Failures:
Bailiff came in with a good Texas reputation, but other than Patterson's Canadians did not recruit much out of state. He appeared to me to be too soft, and his teams were always incredibly sloppy as a result. I think he got talent, but didn't get the most out of it.
Charlie Strong had one year at aTm as a grad assistant, where he would not have been heavily involved in recruiting, and apparently never managed to build the relationships needed with the THSCA or Texas HS coaches individually. Strong also was not the guy the heavy hitters wanted (I've been told by several that Matthew McConaughey wanted Jon Gruden, and that Gruden would have taken the job).
Mensa came to TexasU with a lot of experience and good reputation among Texas HS coaches, but somehow never put it together. I think he got the Jimmys and Joes, but somehow couldn't translate them into Xs and Os. Maybe he was too soft, as suggested by some, but I have always tended to think of him as Bailiff with a hard edge, so I don't know. For whatever reason, I think his reputation with the Texas HS coaches declined over time.

My bottom line: Particularly at Rice, you have to build off a foundation of getting as many good Texas student-athletes as possible, and add to it by strategic recruiting in other areas--I would tend to favor Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Florida, and California, and would want at least one person on my staff with strong ties to each of them. If I took over a program, I would have tried to keep a couple of coaches from the old staff for continuity. Depending on what kind of feedback I got about their coaching abilities and relationships with players, if I had taken over when Bailiff left, I would probably have tried to keep Sloan (recruiting coordinator) and Patterson (Canada connection).

One final thought: I have always thought that recruiting and execution were more important than scheme. But Bloomgren's scheme is such a bad fit for the talent he can recruit at Rice that I'm having second thoughts. Still think recruiting is paramount, but your scheme can be such a bad fit for your talent that you can't teach them to execute it properly.

If anything, it benefits Karlgaard to take the initiative by firing Bloomgren before the new president comes in. It shows initiative, a willingness to move on from a failure when you see one, and a desire to fix the problem as quickly as possible. That's what I would want my new boss to see.

As far as money is concerned, Rice won't have a problem coming up with $1.5 million to buy him out. Donors are in line with that money.

Wow. I'd hate to see how much more brutal it could get on the field and, particularly, in the stands.

But I suspect we will.

I'm not making the 3.5 hour drive from Comal County, and I probably wouldn't if we still lived in Tomball.

Anyone need tickets for Saturday? I have 4 chairbacks available for anyone who'd like them.

RE: Fire Mike Bloomgren
I'd go about recruiting a little differently.

I'd look at kids who are good students who don't get the nod at 'the good' football p5 schools and have to opt for 2nd tier p5 schools. KU, Tech others like that. People are ALL OVER FLorida, so while I'm not against that, I don't see that as low hanging fruit. I'd be more over California where your options are decent/good p5 with good academics or g5 with mediocre ones... like Fresno. I think there is a hole there we could exploit.

Part of the reason would be to set the stage for them to grad transfer from that 'lesser' school if they turn out to be a good p5 player, but not GREAT. Not the type USC or UCLA would spend a scholarship on rather than an incoming freshman.

Yes, I'd still go after local kids and nearby states.... But we need to capture guys who value who we are. and right now, most of the GOOD players who value who we are end up at 'good' (both athletically and academically) flagship state schools.

Apologies if this was discussed earlier in the thread, but also timing related issues around our AAC entrance (2023 season) ... would be nice to have a year of new staff momentum and recruiting (2022) prior to the changeover.

Much as I feel for the seniors, I do not think that I will make the 1-1.5 hour drive (depending on Woodlands traffic) in for the game.

There was the mock trailer for Part 2 at the end of the original (which includes a segment called Jews in Space). Maybe that's where the confusion lies.

Funny how the brain works. I wonder if this is a broader Mandela Effect, or if it's just me and Ricefootball with the faulty memories.

Dang, I could’ve sworn it was just another Mel Brooks gag to name it “Part II”. My memory obviously stinks on ice.

I'm still trying to figure out who stole my Traveling Wilburys Vol. 2 CD.

I also thought it was traveling.

Turns out it was just a false start.

Also, when will we announce and begin the upgrades to HRS? Will that work be complete for September 2023? I could swallow a 5th year of Bloomgren if the HRS construction either wipes out the 2022 home season (we play in another venue) or limits attendance. Maybe the Rice job will be more attractive once stadium improvements are actually underway.

My guess is 2027, based on the Rice norm. Just in time for D3

You could be right.
They certainly need a change in thinking.
I had time to kill Tuesday. I drove my daughters to the Harry Styles concert this past Tuesday. My son went with me and we stopped by Rice and watched the last part of practice. Even my son could see issues with Rice's offense. He reminds me a lot of Todd Santos. He is also about 3 inches taller and understands defenses and offenses better.
This is incredibly frustrating for me. Rice really does have some offensive potential if things were different. And if they evaluated QBs better and devised a better plan. Unfortunately, I don't know if anyone at Rice really gets it. I do know that many there think they do. Oh, well. I guess it is what it is. I still hope that Rice will someday finally get it and utilize Rice diehards who do get it.
