Not happening. Big East said this morning that a future committee will be discussing the expansion issue. It's not a strategic priority like it is at places like, well, the AAC.

With UC leaving the AAC, addibg St. Louis and Dayton for Basketball and Oly would make sense.

SLU is a good fit in the AAC. Who the hell were they polling?

The big news: a new building.
A $20M construction effort which, in 2021, isn't that big.

Yeah. A lot of hype about a practice facility. You can tell they want to prove themselves to the Big East so darn bad.

No, but it's enough to help the Billikens better compete for that coveted 12th Big East membership. And the timing of the announcement on Big East media day and in conjunction with the formation of the Big East expansion committee is no coincidence.

Saint Louis absolutely fits in the Big East both athletically and academically but selfishly I don’t want to see the A-10 lose a member so I hope they stay put.

They should have been proving it on the court rather than building paltry spaces.
Honestly, listening to that event, it was almost cringeworthy. Hopefully the $20m bill didn’t include the PR and Joe Buck promo for the space.

The over-the-top script Joe Buck had to read off was cringeworthy for a practice facility.

Over the past ten years they've been to four NCAA tournaments (most recently in 2019) and an NIT (2021), and had 23 wins in two of the last three seasons. The Big East could do worse.

Not to trap, but who is worse?
Because, even just looking at that ten-year frame, if the Big East is turning away the likes of Dayton, VCU, Wichita State, Temple, and even Davidson, they’re doing worse for the conference’s basketball profile. Turn ten years into twenty, and it looks worse for the Billikens.
It’s one thing if they’re getting in and over the likes of St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island, Drake, Detroit, Valpo, Saint Joe’s, Richmond, etc., but those who’ve performed above SLU not selected?
Really what helps them is location, in relation to the western schools and it from other BE schools who have problems sharing their turf, or are just too snobby about the public/private thing. It wouldn’t be a basketball value-add depending on who is left on the table.

I don’t dispute that there are other potential Big East additions with better on-court pedigrees. Nor am I contending that St. Louis’s investment in their new facility makes them the best candidate. My point is simply that it makes them a stronger candidate. How much it actually helps them will ultimately depend on how the expansion committee chooses to weight the many factors it will likely consider, including on-court performance, market size/TV value, presence of existing members in the same vicinity, ease of travel, institutional fit, fan support, budget, and (yes) facilities.

To be sure. For such a minor decision, the proper thing to do is simply announce it. When you announce that you are going to announce something, that just makes you look pathetic. If you are trying to impress the Big East, you may have shot yourself in the foot.
