Question RE: MLB 2021-22 Hot Stove Thread
Interesting look at the Phillies' issues and how to solve them over the winter:

Here’s how we’d address the Phillies’ three biggest offseason needs

Good for Melvin but a terrible sign for A’s fans. Probably means every decent player on the roster who doesn’t have several years of club control remaining will be let go as a free agent or traded for “prospects” who will never reach the majors. Move over, Rangers, a new team is coming down to take the basement from you. 03-banghead

Until/unless they move or get a stadium in San Jose, why would anyone expect anything else? More interesting will be Seattle's emergence next season (if we have one.)

Obviously the owner rhetoric is always going to be, “Use public money to build me a new ballpark, and after it’s open, trust me, I’ll try to start winning.” And there’s never a shortage of sportswriters and fans who will take the side of billionaire owners and agree with everything the owner says.

On the other hand — not even trying to win is a questionable strategy to employ when you’re trying to shake down various governments for ballpark money. A skeptic would say, “You’re not spending enough to win now, why should we trust you to try to win when a new ballpark opens? You could just as easily count on the shiny new ballpark drawing in fans even if the team never reaches the playoffs.”

Question RE: MLB 2021-22 Hot Stove Thread
...some positive news for Dogers pitching as Bauer declines to opt-out of his contract for 2022 season with the Dogs in order to test free agency again this winter, but he will instead remain on the Dogers’ books for a $32MM salary next season....oh, wait, never mind.

It's worse than that. They did it where it was basically set up as a 2/85 deal with him having a opt out after both 1st and 2nd years(3rd year salary only 17 million). The AAV value is 34 million but they're paying next year 45 million before suspension.

Over 160 free agents on the list posted by MLB. About 20 of them would stand to make really good money in a normal offseason.

This year, it’s not likely there will be any big contracts given out before the lockout begins, and who knows how free agents will fare after the lockout ends.

thought this was pretty interesting in the thought of the CBA negotiations- Not what the owners wanted to get out there I'm sure.

I'm torn on the Bauer issue. Not about having him pitch - I want the SOB gone - but about the financial impacts. From a purely Dodgers fan position, I'd like his salary off the books and for them to have the financial breathing room to sign their (or other) free agents. But I also think Dodgers management needs to be held accountable for this. They knew this guy was a scumbag, thought he was "rehabilitated" or that he could be managed, and they ought to pay a price for their hubris.

Kershaw didn't get a QO. At first blush this looks weird but speculation is that both sides agreed to this because they're working on a deal and the QO would have bogged that down.

Chris Taylor got one. Seager got one. Opinions mixed on whether they sign Taylor (I really hope so). Seager is gonna get a mega-deal so most folks think he's gone.

or maybe it's a friendly way of allowing him flexibility to return to texas?

Kershaw can choose where he wants to play, like any other player, but Kershaw playing for the Rangers would have a Michael Jordan-on-the-Wizards feel to it.

I only compared the Rangers to a sad-sack NBA team; you went and compared them to a AA team. That’s cold.

A little too much optimism in my earlier post. The full explanation from the horse's mouth:

Samantha C Carleton Wrote:Friedman said that Clayton Kershaw, who is still recovering from a left elbow injury, was not extended a qualifying offer like teammates Chris Taylor and Corey Seager to allow the ace pitcher more time to evaluate his options.

“I think just with our respect for him and for what he’s done for this organization, that wasn’t something that we wanted to do and put him on that kind of clock when he wasn’t ready for it,” Friedman said. “If he wants to come back, we will absolutely work together to make that happen. If he doesn’t for whatever reason, that’s his right. He is going to drive a lot of what he wants to do next year.”

A classy, friendly gesture. Hopefully there's enough goodwill there that Dodgers will make an offer Kersh can live with and we'll see him off to retirement after wearing the LA cap his entire career.

RE: MLB 2021-22 Hot Stove Thread
The Angels looked at the Ernie Banks era Chicago Cubs and said, "I see your two wasted MVP seasons, and raise you two more."

Quote:Ohtani is widely expected to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award next week. If he does, it would give the Angels four M.V.P.s in the past eight years, as Trout won in 2014, 2016 and 2019.

In those eight seasons, the Angels have won zero playoff games, made just one postseason appearance and, in the other seven years, finished a combined 131 games out of first place.
