Ugh

Freeman wants the 6 years definitely, and he wants at or close to the $200 Million. If Braves balk he walks. It stinks, but that's the math these days. Plus, he's from SoCal. Even Maddox went back and pitched for the Dogs and Puds some.

Question RE: MLB 2021-22 Hot Stove Thread
Ozuna gets a 20-game retroactive suspension and forfeiture of pay and is eligible to play in 2022. Ozuna signed a four-year, $65MM contract with the Braves last offseason. He remains under contract through 2024.

Now, Bauer?

Question RE: MLB 2021-22 Hot Stove Thread
Last postseason showed the current playoff format is a near-perfect balance f interests and fan excitement. So, what do they want to do? "Fix" what clearly isn't broken. MLB Reportedly Proposes 14-Team Playoff Field In Collective Bargaining Negotiations. Under the proposed format, the top seed in each league would receive a bye. The proposal would then allow the other two division winners in each league to choose which Wild Card team they’d prefer to face in the first round, which would take the form of a three-game series. The division winner with the second-best record in each league would have its pick of any of the four Wild Card clubs in its league; the final division winner would pick to face one of the other three Wild Card teams; the two Wild Card teams remaining would face one another. Ugh. Leave it alone, already.

Texas is middle third in revenue. This is an interesting table (from 2019):

With a few exceptions (ARod and this offseason being good counter examples), Texas has generally behaved as a middle market team, in line with their revenue ranking. In 2019 (I'm looking for normal, non-covid impacted seasons), they were bottom half in attendance. If you want to make the argument that the new stadium and some big new contracts will fill their new stadium with fans, ok - they might start earning the kind of revenue that will make them look more like a big market team. But right now - they're simply not. And honestly, I'm a little dubious that a new stadium will give them more than a short term attendance bump. Texas is a football state and the Rangers aren't going to bring in more fans (and money) unless/until they can be a year-in, year-out contender.

Do you have the link? Arizona has criminal spending behavior (ie not putting a good product out there, yet raking in the money)

They're definitely in, and it makes even more sense with the loss of Seager and the uncertainty over Muncy's timing. I had no idea Freeman is a SoCal native and still lives here in the offseason (he grew up just a few miles from where I did and attended a rival high school).

On a related note, it's interesting how some players and teams are rushing to sign contracts after all we heard about how guys would wait until the new CBA was finalized. I think some are still going to wait but the number of high profile guys already signed and clearly negotiating is not consistent with what we heard a few weeks ago. I assume some of this is just selecting certainty over uncertainty but I just learned that bonuses and deferred money get paid even in a lockout. So a deal signed today will pay out bonuses even if no new deal is agreed upon before midnight. That's a pretty huge deal, especially if there's a lockout and it goes a while.

yeah think I saw 25 of the top 50 from the MLBTR top 50 signed now that Knebel signed with the Phillies and 4 others from their Honorable mentions so 29 of top 67 done- or about 43%. And it's not like a lot of bottom guys signed- 13 of top 25 signed as well.

It's been a fun few weeks here for sure.

I prefer this way of free agency than the pulling teeth way of free agency that we see almost all the time.

I prefer it when a bunch of Dodgers don't get signed by other teams as FAs.

Just jumped back in here to post that but you beat me to it! This is a much bigger signing than many will think. Dude is 20th in the NL in WAR (b and f) since 2017, and doesn't have a regular position. I was extremely nervous they'd lose him too. Not thrilled with the offseason so far but this is a nice little bit of news to send us into the fog of CBA negotiations and (possibly) work stoppage.

I know it's technically a work stoppage so I probably should have used another word, but I really don't give a **** until spring training is impacted.

Now hearing Jansen not expected to return. Won’t find out for a while of course but the Marlins are trying to spend money and it sounds like he’s had productive talks with them. He’s also from Curaçao so it’d be much closer to home.

Just when I was starting to like him again…
