Question RE: MLB 2021-22 Hot Stove Thread

Quote:Ohtani is widely expected to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award next week. If he does, it would give the Angels four M.V.P.s in the past eight years, as Trout won in 2014, 2016 and 2019.

In those eight seasons, the Angels have won zero playoff games, made just one postseason appearance and, in the other seven years, finished a combined 131 games out of first place.

Almost every team has a player with a similar story...Braves had 2-time MVP Dale Murphy back in the day, and he did nothing for them as far as playoffs go. Still, I'd rather have had him and him win MVP than not. I suppose some would have that player traded for prospects, certainly more common today than in yesteryear, but those prospects have to pan out, and that takes time. A bird in the hand. Starting your build with an MVP is better than not more times than not, I suppose.

It’s the other way around, IMO. It’s not that Murphy did nothing to get the Braves to the playoffs, it’s that the Braves did almost nothing for a player who contributed as much as he did. As the Angels have done nothing for Trout and Ohtani. Though, I think Ohtani, unlike Trout, is not going to ride out his entire MLB career in Anaheim unless the Angels load up and at least make the playoffs next year.

So this is the first step in the Angels showing Ohtani that they are trying to win in 2022?

Question RE: MLB 2021-22 Hot Stove Thread
with all the free-agent signings before Dec 1, a little disappointed Brvaes are waiting on Freeman. Hold up is he wants 6 years and Braves (probably prudently) only want to give him 5. Also, he wants $200M and Braves are hanging around at $155Mil. Hope they don't blow it.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman sez Scherzer is expected to make a decision about possibly playing with either the Dodgers, Giants, Angels or Mets next year before the impending lockout deadline. This could also be real interesting. Or not.

Fascinated by Rays siging Kluber to a 1 year deal. They are a heckuva organization the way they manage their resources in a very tough division year after year and come out ahead more often than not. Money isn't everything, fellas.

Oh, and after being traded mid-season by Braves to Indians (for some guy named Eddie Rosario) and then released by the Indians, the Panda wants to keep on playin'. Maybe the Asteroids will sign him to go along with Dusty? He's good for the first few months, at least.

I wish baseball free agency was like this all the time. This last week or so has been fantastic.

Looking like the Mets will get Scherzer.

Rangers added Gray and Semien today, said to still be in on both Story and Seager. Kershaw also not ruled out with the Gray signing.

Possible Dodgers lose Scherzer, Seager, and Kershaw.

I still think they keep two of them though, I can't see my Rangers actually adding Seager and Kershaw. That sh*t just doesn't happen to my teams.

Record contract! Other than a bottom-dweller, I can't imagine a better NL landing spot for Scherzer from a Dodgers-perspective. The Mets always figure a way to foul things up.

My assumption is that Seager is gone but Kershaw will stay.

It's potentially a huge impact. Muncy is one of the highest value position players in MLB and their performance in the post-season was hugely impacted by his loss. I haven't seen anything about TJ surgery so presumably it's just rehab? I don't know how long that takes. Typical time from TJ surgery to game hitting is 10ish months.

... and there goes Seager. Not a surprise, as implied above. The Trea Turner trade was a pretty good indicator the Dodgers were: 1) protecting against Seager leaving; and 2) telling Corey he'd probably have to move to 3B soon. I'm bummed but maybe there's a silver lining? All this money the Rangers are spending might not leave enough to lure Kershaw away...

Rangers are "only" at 141 million in the CBT right now for '22. So they still have quite a bit more money to spend.

But that's already $37MM more than they spent last year. Having room under the threshold <> comfortable spending lots more.

I'm not taking comfort in this - it's entirely possible they could spend another $50MM for 2022. But they just aren't a big market team and for them to spend like one would surprise me.

2020 they were supposed to be at 170 and 2019 at 148. So even if it's 2020 number that's still 29 million more left to go.

And they you figure have more revenue now with the new ballpark.

If he has Tommy John, hard to see him playing until Sept at the earliest. Even then, is it worth the long term risk?

Dallas-Fort Worth isn't a big market? With brand new stadium?

Heard an interesting thing from Steve Phillips this morning on MLB radio. He was saying the Dodgers may be in on Freddie Freeman.
