JMU is dying to get out of the CAA so there is your #7 and I think MO St would be interested as #8 and would feel comfortable being in a conference with WKU and MTSU.

Once you get back to a stable 8, then you can pick from ASun and WAC schools interested in upgrading while also making NMSU and Liberty feel more comfortable they are not jumping on a sinking ship.

My concern is that if they get down to 6, the remaining schools will find other options.

If CUSA gets down to 6, nobody's going to have any other options because those options will be full from raiding CUSA.

UAB, Charlotte, FAU, UTSA to the AAC
USM, Marshall, ODU, WKU to the SBC
Rice and UNT to the MWC

LaTech, UTEP, MTSU, FIU on an island.

Maybe MTSU to the MAC, LaTech to the AAC/MWC or SBC in place of WKU with WKU joining MTSU in the MAC. UTEP might be forced to the WAC + Indy. FIU could honestly just drop to FCS.

Not probable in the slightest. But possible I suppose.

Classy.

Inaccurate?

Her gender is irrelevant. If she is a bad commissioner, that has nothing to do with her gender.

Didn’t the ASUN and/or WAC have aspirations of moving their whole FB leagues up to FBS? Seems like CUSA could be down to one school and still survive. There’s an NCAA autobid and CFP contract already there. Not that it’d be ideal or especially good for anyone involved except those wanting to join.

It's just really hard for me to imagine anyone taking 8 teams out of a conference as weak as C-USA.

And that begs the question, just how weak (maybe undesireable is a better word) is a conference if other conferences want 8 of their members?

RE: Killing CUSA - Possible and Likely??
Nah, no need to kill the conference. It’s already been weakened as is as the new AAC is basically the old C-USA.

If anything they need to rebrand C-USA to something else or steal back the Southwestern Conference name.

They gotta find a way to make C-USA into a Southwest conference and Sun Belt into a Southeast conference.

The only way to make these G5 leagues more relevant is by creating more regional rivalries and putting more emphasis on conference play.

RE: Killing CUSA - Possible and Likely??
i'm just spitballing here but what if wac history repeats itself and the wac football schools:

Abilene Christian (FCS/TX)
Dixie State (FCS/UT)
Lamar (FCS/TX)
NM State (FBS/NM)
Sam Houston (FCS/TX)
Southern UT (FCS/UT)
Stephen F. Austin (FCS/TX)
Tarleton (FCS/TX)

...left en masse to the cusa???

if cusa is left with a very odd couple mix of 6:
FIU, FAU, WKU, MTSU, LA Tech, and UTEP

then cusa would get:
(1) - FBS school = NMSU
(7) - potential FBS schools
* 1 - New Mexico
* 2 - Utah
* 5 - Texas
(14) - total football members

the wac football members would get:
fbs established conference...
would not need to petition to ncaa to upgrade conference from fcs to fbs...
fbs ready wac schools can start fbs play when eligible...
wac football members wanting to stay fcs can stay in the wac...

just a thought...

CUSA isnt going anywhere. Its just going to look different. Probably a smaller 8 to 10 team league. The problem is UTEP will likely remain---making the league really spread out without a real good solution to fix it.

C-USA won’t die… as others have said here, JMU wants out of the CAA BAD. We would join plus Liberty if C-USA would accept them. Maybe convince Delaware too if need be.

If the MAC takes WKU and MTSU, I don't see how CUSA rebuilds, unless they become the FBS gateway conference for the 1AA schools that have been long rumored to be interested in upgrading.

If the AAC, MWC, and Sunbelt all take CUSA schools, will the conference have the ability to survive?

1) I feel like there are too many FCS programs with FBS aspirations for CUSA to die. Plus, that scenario has a lot of poaching. They could end up with 8-10 teams to rebuild with.

2) I'll be shocked if the SBC doesn't use this opportunity to find a way into Florida. It's ridiculous that they don't have a team there.

RE: Killing CUSA - Possible and Likely??
The realignment rumors are kind of all over the map.

MWC-14 (UTSA, UNT)
AAC-14 (Rice, LaTech, UAB, Marshall, App St, FAU)
SBC-14 (USM, WKU, MT, Charlotte, FIU)

I think it does make sense for the SBC to grab a Florida presence. If USF/FAU are both in the AAC then the SBC should pick up FIU. Also WKU, MT work well in the SBC because Arkansas St is there.

UTEP->WAC
ODU->A10

It all depends on who does the striking first and if CUSA will have time to backfill.

The Sun Belt would never take Middle Tennessee back. There was a falling out with their exit.

RE: Killing CUSA - Possible and Likely??
I think the KEY question here is does the MW take two from Texas or NOT?? IF they do then there is a possibility that C-USA dies.

AAC-- six ( five CUSA, 1 SBC)

SBC-- three from C-USA

AND the tipping point... IF MW takes two from Texas then CUSA is down to FOUR...

You say-- "Well they can still add four and go to eight"--- Maybe-- but then the final hammer drops as the SBC takes two more to get to fourteen.

Two schools left go Indy or back to FCS.

Why would the SBC take two more? Reduces competition in the South from another league for recruits, media, and fans. Also reduces travel costs as tight divisional play and close rivalries kick in. Increases share of CFP money even though it is split among fourteen. League commissions a study for a possible conference name change.

Of course if the MW takes none and/or the AAC takes four or less------ C-USA lives.

I don't see anyone doing a lateral move to the Sun Belt. What's much more likely is the remnants of CUSA absorb the best 7 to 9 from the Sun Belt which gives the Sun Belt members an easy way to dump the 2 basketball schools and ULM.

I don't see anyone leaving the Sun Belt for CUSA at this point. That ship has sailed

I believe that Texas State would jump, but only if none of the CUSA Texas schools leave. Which isn’t likely, but TSU would definitely jump if they remained.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no to that. It would be fun to play the Texas schools, but it would be very difficult to leave the Sunbelt and the stability it offers during these trying times.

C-USA dying will involve three things happening:
1. The MW takes UNT and UTSA
2. The AAC takes at least 4 C-USA schools
3. The Sun Belt takes 4 C-USA schools

If C-USA gets down to 4 or fewer schools, I think it's done.

A large part of it would depend on how fast moves are announced.

Say the AAC strikes first, bringing C-USA down to nine. The East wants an addition, so they ask for JMU. The west wants an addition, so they ask for NMSU. The jury is out on #12, because three schools are looking to hit the exits.

So then Southern Miss and two others leave for the Sun Belt. C-USA takes Lamar and Kennesaw State.

UTSA and UNT them defect to the Mountain West, and are immediately replaced by Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin.

The Sun Belt then makes their final pull. Those schools are replaced by Missouri State and Kennesaw State.

UConn and UMass join for football only.

CUSA
West - NMSU, UTEP, SFA, SHSU, Lamar, MSU
East - JMU, KSU, EKU, ODU, UConn, UMass

Maybe the topic title should be changed.

"What CUSA death fantasy makes you hard?"

That's the vibe I'm getting with some of these ridiculous suggestions.

Kind of.

Humans, especially sports fans, are subject to feeding frenzies similar to sharks. A little blood in the water and away we go.
