A space theme would be more appropriate for Houston than UCF.

UCF was created to be a technical school to support NASA. Grew into much more, but a huge number of Alums worked there (currently 28% of the workforce), they built the football stadium with the 50 yard line in line with Pad 39. There is a big connection with the space program. It really was not until 2018 that they started to tap into that theme.

The Pegasus became the school's first athletic mascot in 1970, when UCF students voted and selected the "Knight of Pegasus" as the mascot over "Vincent the Vulture" which had been the unofficial mascot. The Pegasus with the stars is on the emblem and the school motto reach for the Stars was big for years

I heard UCF copied Purdue's space uniforms.

Totally agree. Those kinds of nicknames diminish the legacy of the likes of our founders, many of whom died attempting to capture or kill the roaming packs of Binturongs around Clifton.
