Yeah, how about "while maintaining continued access to the NCAA Basketball Tournament and College Football Playoff as it evolves"? Does she really think C-USA currently has any real access to the CFB Playoff? And how do you maintain something that does not exist?

Perhaps she is referencing the upcoming 12 team playoff? An undefeated C-USA (or SBC, or MAC) team would have a very good shot at getting a playoff bid over a 1 loss MWC or AAC 2.0 program.

She's referring to the current $90 million benefit distribution to Gang of 5 conferences from the College Football Playoff, which will change as it evolves. Besides after Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF leave, the AAC won't be sending anyone there either.

RE: Breaking: Letter sent from CUSA TO AAC Released
I suppose the letter is to show that she tried.

Perhaps she can generate some media sympathy for her point of view, too. On paper, her position seems eminently sensible. Why not reorganize into a Texas-oriented conference, a Southeast-oriented conference, and a Mid-Atlantic-oriented conference?

Well, we know why. These conferences are rife with petty rivalries. Louisiana Tech doesn't want to be in a conference with the other Louisiana schools. South Florida doesn't want to be in a conference with the other Florida schools. Etc.

Plus, ESPN -- which helps fund the AAC and the Sun Belt -- wants to lure the best of Conference USA away from whatever network(s) carries Conference USA games.

When all is done, I hope we see some reporting on ESPN's role in all this.

It does seem like an endless loop.

AAC (adds CUSA schools)
SBC (adds CUSA schools)
CUSA (adds FCS/Indy schools)

The overall quality of each conference keeps moving lower.

The SBC has grown stronger with each addition these past 9 years.

The only delusional one is Judy. She should have sent this to the Sunbelt 4 years ago where it would have been received with serious interest. The two leagues could have traded a few teams back and forth and done each other some good. Now---the Sunbelt can take what they need to tighten their footprint and really dont need a letter from CUSA to do it. On the up side, CUSA will get smaller and will have another shot at getting a rebuild right.

CUSA added SBC schools in the last round of realignment. SBC has yet to pull from CUSA.

Something like this can only be done from a position of strength. If the AAC were to have sent that letter then it would be taken more seriously. Also as AttackCoog mentioned, CUSA years ago when the SBC was still pulling teams from FCS. Why bother now when it would be so much easier to do what's best for our conferences even if it hurts CUSA. Its the law of the jungle out here.

Actually, IF the current AAC would've had 2025 Big 12's metrics, it would have broken down the autonomy door.
The reconfigured Big 12 is the #1 Basketball league and the #3 football league, all day.

Basically the Old Big East died so the New Big 12 could live.

Judy is a product of Tulsa, and her heart left with Tulsa to the AAC back in 2014. She never gave a crap about Conference USA and its member institutions because her heart was always fawning for the AAC and Tulsa.

RE: Breaking: Letter sent from CUSA TO AAC Released
I fully believe that if you sat the presidents of Sun Belt, AAC, and CUSA down in a hotel and told them the deal is everyone throws their media rights into the pot to create three leagues that will negotiate a single deal, X% distributed equally per school, and Y% is based on TV appearances on a formula that recognizes the network and broadcast window, rewarding schools for drawing the best appearances that you could increase the take of every school or darn close to it.

Allow shifting without penalty or entry fee.

Everyone gets a home.

The net result would look more like what we have than the fantasy purely map driven proposals.

Even if you applied a mechanism reflecting game theory, say each president gets a card with their school name on it and the president can write the name of two schools on it and matches (ie. Two schools both pick the other) and respect those matches and work from there, you still won’t get massive differences.

Exactly. The Sunbelt and CUSA were on equal ground with plenty of time to calmly consider what regionalization might offer and how it might be accomplished. The AD's have been talking about it for years---but the only reason CUSA is willing to engage in a dialogue now is because they are in a really bad situation and are about to get raided. It has nothing to do with their sudden great concern with the well being of student athletes.

It still isnt going to work for the AAC schools because those schools are not going to risk the steady revenue flow from the AAC TV deal on a system that at best---even with a bevy of the most valuable TV slots---probably barely matches their regular AAC payout. There's just no way the AAC schools are going to give up guaranteed income for some unpredictable system that ebbs and flows based on how good you are in a given year. The same years your ticket sales and concession income drops because your team is doing poorly---your media income is going to drop off the edge of the table. That's a feast or famine nightmare for AD's trying to budget. The fact is--administrators like the idea of stable reliable revenue flows. What your proposing is just a form of relegation and promotion---but for TV revenue.

I like your other idea. Have CUSA, the Sunbelt, and the AAC all pass a rule that suspends all exit and entry fees for schools leaving the SB, CUSA, and AAC as long as they are moving between those 3 conferences. Then just let schools decide if they want to move, where they want to go, and let the conferences decide if they want to accept those asking for entry. Thats granting freedom of movement and allowing freedom of association to rule conference alignment among those 3 conferences. Leave the rule in place for 3 months and let everyone figure it out.

My primary point though was even if everyone wanted to sign off on such a deal, the alignments are still going to be pretty dang similar to what they are now.

People tend to think of this in terms of the schools at the far west and Far East of each league but invariably there are going to be schools in the MIDDLE of the map they want to affiliate with and those schools in the middle of the map are going to have schools to the east and west they’ve like to remain with.
