RE: Breaking: Letter sent from CUSA TO AAC Released
Start with current AAC West Tulane, Tulsa, SMU, Navy/Wichita, and Memphis. These schools I believe like being with each other and since they are at the top of the food chain their opinion is going to carry the most weight and have top priority. They would probably want to align with UAB and Rice for sure with USF as their Florida outlet. I'll add USM and LA Tech to fill out the roster since those two have been associated with members of the core 5 before.

Final result: (AAC Shell)
Navy/Wichita, Tulsa, SMU, Rice, Tulane, Memphis, UAB, USM, LA Tech, USF

Now look at the East
Marshall, Charlotte, ODU, WKU and MTSU make a ton of sense together so they would be the next core 5 that would voluntarily stick together. They would want to align with Temple, ECU, App St and I believe GA St for sure. App is going to want GA Southern and I would think they would be the 12 team conference so they would grab a promising Coastal and FAU as their Florida outlet
Final Result: (CUSA Shell)
North: Temple, Marshall, WKU, MTSU, Charlotte, ODU
South: App, ECU, Coastal, GA St, GA South, FAU

The last alignment would be those remaining. Fairly regional with a Florida outlet
Final Result: (Sunbelt Shell)
UTEP, UTSA, Texas St, N Texas, Arkansas St, Louisiana, ULM, South Alabama, Troy, and FIU

If this could be the final result I think most would be happy

Roadblocks besides TV money and entrance/exit fees I see

How do you get ECU and Temple to voluntarily leave the AAC and join up with CUSA and Sunbelt East schools in the CUSA shell?

How do you get FIU to join the Sunbelt shell?

The only delusional one is Judy. She should have sent this to the Sunbelt 4 years ago where it would have been received with serious interest. The two leagues could have traded a few teams back and forth and done each other some good. Now---the Sunbelt can take what they need to tighten their footprint and really dont need a letter from CUSA to do it. On the up side, CUSA will get smaller and will have another shot at getting a rebuild right.

There was nothing going on 4 years ago. There were no movements.

Something like this can only be done from a position of strength. If the AAC were to have sent that letter then it would be taken more seriously. Also as AttackCoog mentioned, CUSA years ago when the SBC was still pulling teams from FCS. Why bother now when it would be so much easier to do what's best for our conferences even if it hurts CUSA. Its the law of the jungle out here.

CUSA hasn’t been in a position of strength since it told ESPN to sit and spin a decade ago. Now ESPN is going to rip it apart.

Exactly. The Sunbelt and CUSA were on equal ground with plenty of time to calmly consider what regionalization might offer and how it might be accomplished. The AD's have been talking about it for years---but the only reason CUSA is willing to engage in a dialogue now is because they are in a really bad situation and are about to get raided. It has nothing to do with their sudden great concern with the well being of student athletes.

And you notice they only officially sent the letter to the AAC. It would get rejected by both the AAC and the Sun-Belt, but it getting rejected by the AAC isn't embarrassing, it getting rejected by a league you raided not long ago would be. C-USA wanted nothing to do with this idea when they had a little more power in the situation. They want it now because they know they can't take teams from anywhere except FCS and the independent ranks.

How do you get ECU and Temple to voluntarily leave the AAC and join up with CUSA and Sunbelt East schools in the CUSA shell?

How do you get FIU to join the Sunbelt shell?

For many reasons this is why this would never work. That first shell is by far the best conference, and whatever conference got to keep the AAC shell gets to keep the far largest share of future NCAA tournament credits, including years of credits from Houston's Final 4 run. Why would ECU/Temple leave that behind? How would you compensate them for tournament shares paid out years into the future? How would you split up the probably close to 50 million in exit fees coming from Houston/Cincy/UCF? Would they have a compelling argument to say they don't owe them anymore if you went through with this plan? That first league on paper would get a way better TV deal with Navy, Memphis, SMU, and USF in it, again what would be the reasoning ECU/Temple would leave that?

If the Sun Belt is so much better than CUSA, I wonder why the AAC wont be adding any of their programs?

We all know AAC doesnt want new FBS upstart programs such as App St and Coastal Carolina.

Exactly.

No schools is going to voluntarily leave the AAC unless they can get a Big East/UConn deal.

ECU and Temple are not getting that so therefore they are not leaving, especially a school like ECU that is used to not have a geographic rival.

If I were running the AAC, SBC schools like App State, Georgia State and ULL would be near the top of my list. Marshall would be the only CUSA school on my radar.

Because the Sun-Belt actually built themselves in a way that makes them kinda unappealing to the AAC schools. Aside from ECU the AAC is a league that resides in large markets, has pretty high academic standards, and cares about basketball a lot. Sun-Belts best schools are in small markets, are for the most part regional masters universities and not high level research universities, and for the most part are football first and don't really put a ton of emphasis on hoops. Honestly it was a good strategy. C-USA tried to grow with the poor mans AAC strategy, but the AAC market schools have all been playing FBS football for decades and had some level of history and success in at least one or both major sports. C-USA added a bunch of markets that had barely been playing FBS football or had never played FBS football and for the most part had awful basketball programs.

Correction, CUSA-W schools wanted nothing to do with a SB merger years ago and likely still don’t. You likely still couldn’t get LT & NT to sign off on a letter like this to the SB. The AAC western teams are obviously more palatable.

Interview Judy MacLeod gave on Sportscenter shortly after being named commissioner of Conference USA. I thought it was interesting. Some things said seemed almost prophetic.

After the AAC picks off the larger market CUSA schools they want the remaining CUSA schools can add FCS call ups. And they won't be from the larger markets. hehehe

Is Judy dumb or naive? There’s no reason for the AAC to consider a reorganization with C-USA.

She's just trying to do something else that people will remember her for as a first for an FBS commissioner.

Perhaps she can generate some media sympathy for her point of view, too. On paper, her position seems eminently sensible. Why not reorganize into a Texas-oriented conference, a Southeast-oriented conference, and a Mid-Atlantic-oriented conference?

Well, we know why. These conferences are rife with petty rivalries. Louisiana Tech doesn't want to be in a conference with the other Louisiana schools. South Florida doesn't want to be in a conference with the other Florida schools. Etc.

Plus, ESPN -- which helps fund the AAC and the Sun Belt -- wants to lure the best of Conference USA away from whatever network(s) carries Conference USA games.

When all is done, I hope we see some reporting on ESPN's role in all this.

It's not nearly as much that as the teams in various regions just don't have the same value. Texas A&M, SMU, UTSA, and Texas State are all worth wildly different amounts.

Only CUSA and SBC should reorganize after the AAC takes who they want and see if the MWC wants Texas. Then do to regional conference

It's everyones' assumption that multiple CUSA teams are wanting to jump to the Sun Belt. Has there actually been any smoke related to this?

Just curious if schools are actually exploring leaving, or if they'd be fine just getting a tv deal with an actual channel.

That is my thoughts on it, especially if the AAC takes from both CUSA and SBC.

AAC West: Tulsa, SMU, Rice, Tulane, Memphis, UAB, Navy
AAC East: Temple, Marshall, ECU, App St, GSU, FAU, USF

That would leave CUSA at 10 and the SBC at 8.

CUSA: WKU, MT, USA, LaTech ODU, Charlotte, Coastal, GeoSo, FIU
SBC: UTEP, UNT, UTSA, TX St, AState, ULL, ULM, USM, Troy

Evenly splits the two conferences into 9. Then CUSA can bring in JMU and SBC can bring in MoSt to get back to 10.

The horse trading part isn't that difficult if the AAC takes both from the SBC and CUSA as their wouldn't be too many outliers.
