There’s been solid support for the idea from back channels for a while. It’s a long shot but when the next dominoes fall it’ll be that much closer to happening. The AAC plus a couple CUSA teams minus Memphis, maybe others will get another haircut and have even more trouble backfilling.

The AAC didn’t send any letters to the MWC schools but their rejection was plenty public just the same.

I think this is a last ditch effort by Judy to save her job. She can lord over the western half while Aresco lords over the eastern. That's what she is hoping for. In reality she is going to get tossed by C-USA once all this blows up in her face.

That too, we can throw Judy under the bus afterwards.

If Delaney can get ESPN to sign off on this and make payouts for all schools relatively equal than maybe

I just don't see why ESPN would do that when they already own the AAC and Sunbelt and can use those 2 conferences to get any CUSA school they desire

I wouldn't say the AAC got rejected.

Air Force and Colorado State admitted they contacted the AAC. Then they made a joint public statement they were staying in the MWC.

The AAC was just listening the entire time while all that was going on around them. Those teams wanted to move but they buckled to outside forces.

It was the reporters that were putting the story on it.

If I were Temple and my choices were the proposed Eastern Division or going back to the MAC for all sports I would go back to the MAC in a heartbeat. At least they have some history with those teams, and the geography is better.

If UAB is the only CUSA member that moves to AAC, then CUSA should count that as a win. Doesn’t make CUSA’s geographic scatter any better, but doesn’t make it any worse, either.

While I wasn't at all surprised to see UAB mentioned, was surprised we didn't see another name or two mentioned (might be a sign AAC still is undecided how many or who to target after UAB).

The AAC presidents and ADs may be having a hard time with this process. Aresco has pumped them up with the P6 rhetoric for years, and then made them think they were going to flex their muscles and decimate the Mountain West. Maybe that means some or all of the remaining AAC members are now conditioned to think every available school is unworthy to share a conference with them, and they have to be convinced to grudgingly accept inviting UAB or anyone else.

What would be the travel cost savings?

Look at it from Tulsa, Tulane, SMU perspective.

You lose: USF, Temple, ECU
You get: UNT, Rice, LaTech, USM, UAB

I don’t think it’s terrible for the western schools.

RE: SI.COM: CUSA to Request AAC to Reorganization into two conferences
I still think Memphis and South Florida will end up in the XII. That leaves 30 (assuming Navy/Wichita St count as 1 school). I still see Navy going independent and the MWC picking up Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, and Wichita St. That brings the number down to 25. At this point, perhaps East Carolina and Temple choose football independence with non-football parked in the A-10 bringing the number down to 23. Now add New Mexico St for 24 and split into 2 regional conferences.

CUSA
North: Charlotte, Georgia St, Marshall, Middle Tennessee St, Old Dominion, Western Kentucky
South: Appalachian St, Coastal Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Georgia Southern, Troy

SBC
East: Arkansas St, South Alabama, Southern Miss, UAB, UL Lafayette, UL Monroe
West: Louisiana Tech, New Mexico St, North Texas, Texas St, UTEP, UTSA

If they wanted to go they would have went. The AAC is on plan C and everyone knows it.

Temple isn't going back to the MAC. They institutionally fit with the big metros in the AAC. There is no interest to play in Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, etc, for pennies of what they get in the American.

While everyone knew that there were back channel talks the AAC still has some plausible deniability here. Judging by what the ADs at CSU and AFA said there was at least enough serious interest from the MWC to make the effort to bring them in worth the public relations risk.

What the CUSA is trying to do with this plan is like proposing to someone on the Jumbotron on a first date. The odds of it working are not worth the public ridicule of the plan failing in front of 60,000 people.

Right. None of those are really good. UAB actually helps a little. Also UTEP is having a good year.

Totally insanity by Judy. Only thing crazier would be Aresco entertaining this idea.

CSU and AFA wanted to go but they didn't. They got brow beaten.

That being said, the AAC didn't engage them in that process.

In fact, the interest that came from CSU and AFA is only backing up the AAC's status as being the top G5. So, they stepped away from the process. That's not a black mark on the AAC's end.

Just let the expansion process play out. Maybe Army is involved. Maybe they aren't. The only things people are hearing aren't coming out of Dallas.

RE: SI.COM: CUSA to Request AAC to Reorganization into two conferences
The TV dollars don't have to be equal shares. For a 5 or 10 or whatever agreed upon time frame a higher % could go to the "former AAC" schools. After that agreed upon time frame it is equal. As an EXAMPLE: for 7 years the AAC schools get 50%, the Sun Belt 30% and CUSA gets 20%.

Houston, UC, UCF and BYU aren't going to get equal shares in the Big 12 for a while.

I think it has a shot. More than you "negative" guys think.

Aresco trying to raid the B12 thinks this idea is stupid. I thought Aresco failing on the MWC expansion was a really bad look, this is hysterical.

Would Temple have greater interest in playing MTSU, WKU, ODU, FA/IU for pennies of what they get in the American? At least the travel cost would be less. What Temple and I am sure the rest of the AAC teams what is to select the best 2 to 4 Sun Belt, CUSA and/or Buffalo with the promise of more TV money than get now, Saturday games in October and November on a platform that you can on Basic Cable. While their status as the top G5 conference is in doubt, they are at worst the second best G5 conference and the logically next step for a CUSA or Sun Belt team.

Only thing I can think is that if it's out in the public, it might get traction with some higher ups at a few AAC schools that might result in some internal pressure for the AAC to consider it, or at least counter with something more palatable. I don't know how likely, if at all, it would be to work, but we're in the "miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take" segment of the realignment dance.

Having a conversation is good. The AAC teams are in the catbird seat. Building more sensible geographic conferences will help build rivalries and cut down on some expenses. It also, could give the student athletes more time back at campus.

It isn't a totally crazy idea.
