P5 transfers in the Belt this season...
So far this season:
James Blackmon is benched for Layne Hatcher at Ark State.
Taylor Powell is benched for Gunnar Watson at Troy.
GS's transfer linebackers from Oregon, Florida State, and UNC have been mostly supplanted by true freshmen after our top 2 ILBs were lost for the season.
Troy's transfer linebacker that lettered at Michigan is apparently playing but isn't starting.

Chase Brice is probably in no danger of losing his starting job but in fairness his immediate backup probably couldn't start at any other team in the conference.

I'm not really all that surprised because I followed us in the FCS long enough to know not to expect a lot from transfers from major conferences but I am wondering if most everyone in the conference is seeing this.

Honestly, if I'm a G5 coach I might be trying to get all-conference performers in FCS over these P5 guys in order to get the most out of the portal.

There is probably a greater success rate with JUCOs over P5 transfers

A mixture of both. Evaluate well and get the right guys. Blackman was injured, not benched. ASU has had success with Bennett, Hunt, Blackman and Lang but missed on another WR, an OL who left before the first game, a CB from BC and perhaps a couple of DTs but it's early to tell on them.

RE: P5 transfers in the Belt this season...
I think our backup would start at a few teams in the conference. He lead the game winning drive against GSU last year, and beat Coastal when Thomas was out in 2019. Chase has been great so far. Definitely better than Thomas last year, and arguably our best passing QB ever.

Other than that, our RB from ND is barely seeing the field. I haven't seen our safety from Stanford touch the field yet. Madison Cone from Wisconsin has been very solid, however.

As exciting as it is to get these guys, there's usually a reason they left their P5 school. Only occasionally do you get a real standout.

Jahmir smith has been dealing with a foot injury, but he played vs GSU.

Stu Head is medically retiring from football as well.

Agreed, from an App State perspective, P5 transfers usually are just depth chart fillers; rarely starters. WR, Corey Sutton was a rare, recent exception to this, but he's also had more eligibility upon transferring than most we see. I'd love to have Chase Brice in our program for longer, his passing pedigree isn't something we've had before at App. We've had a little bit more success with JUCOs overall historically, but this was more in the FCS era of our program, particularly, from Georgia Military College. Overall, I've always thought we go to these transfers when we haven't had the success we needed in recruiting a position or perhaps a player left early/unexpectedly. All that said, championship teams are built with players developed over years in a quality program.

Taylor Powell wasn't benched, he's injured. Watson played well, but not night and day better than Powell. Good chance that Powell is the QB again when healthy unless Watson starts lighting up the scoreboard. Watson is listed as QB1 again this week.

The five star Michigan transfer is backing up All-American Carlton Marshall. No surprise he's not starting, but he is playing well the times I've seen him in games. He adds depth to what is one of the best defensive fronts in college football.

Taiyon Palmer (NC STATE) and Devon Barrett (Auburn) are backup and reserve corners, receptively. Taiyon is playing a lot, Barrett is still getting up to speed, but is playing sparingly.

Of the two P5 DT transfers Troy picked up, only one is on the depth chart this week, and is playing reserve behind two other guys.

Jacob Huesman could start at a few places I can think of.

Chase Brice is 2nd in passer efficiency, 4th in touchdowns, 4th in yards, 1st in yards per game, and 2nd in completion percentage in the Sun Belt.

I'm not sure why you give such a low review.

I agree 100%

App has done that with starter and local kid Isiah Helms. Went to high school right down the mountain and he was an All-Conference guy at Western Carolina. Not oddly his Head Coach at WCU was App State alum Mark Spier who is now back at App State as a defensive analyst.

Don't forget about good old James Graham at GS, who never even made it onto the field for a game.

Jamyest Williams played defense at South Carolina (I think LB) but is making an impact at RB at GSU.

Jamil Muhammad was a QB from Vanderbilt but is playing at LB.

It seems Taylor Powell was only named the starter because he could extend plays with his running ability. Unfortunately, he's just not a good downfield passer, so his ability to extend plays was pointless... I can see why he was never the starter at Missouri. Gunnar Watson is a WAY better passer... he's just slow as molasses.

To be fair to linebacker Jordan Anthony (the 5-star Michigan transfer), he is the backup to an All-American linebacker in Carlton Martial... otherwise, I think he'd be the starter.

Wanna get GSU’s impression of P5 transfers? Just say the name “Star Jackson”.

And boom goes the OP's narrative.

I thought Blackmon was hurt?

There will be hits and misses, one-year pro or con on portal transfers is not going to prove anything. This is a new day not like the old system. TXST took 19 transfers last year 10 P5 IIRC I guess they would be the best case study on short and long-term improvement.
