Yes. 8 is s total non-starter.
Pac/ACC/Big 12/G5 will not accept a straight 8.
SEC/ND will not accept guaranteed slots for champs.
Its not clear if they can get ESPN to pay more as they still only have 7 games (4+2+1 vs. NY6+1).

Zero chance of an 8 team field in the next 5 years.

Everything indicates 12 is still pretty much agreed on, but the logistics are sticky.
