Latest on Chicago State's Pursuit for League Membership
An update from the Chicago Defender on Chicago State's membership efforts as well as the conferences that they have reached out to at this point.

===
With less than ten months remaining before Chicago State University exits the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), athletic director Elliott Charles has been in discussion with several Division I conferences. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Ohio Valley Conference, Missouri Valley Conference, Summit League, and Southwestern Athletic Conference are among the conferences contacted, according to Charles, who is identifying conferences that mirror Chicago State’s level of competition and profile.

The final decision as to which conference Chicago State University will call home will be a collaborative process. Chicago State University associate, athletic director for communications Jim Christman, explained in an email to the Defender that student-athletes, community members, the Chicago State University board of trustees, and stakeholders will all have an input. He noted, too, Chicago State University intends to continue to compete at the Division I level. At this time, Winter 2022 is the tentative deadline for a news conference announcement.

“Chicago State University is focused on two priorities: making the best decisions for our current and future student-athletes, and building a competitive foundation across our programs as Chicago’s only Southside NCAA Division I institution,” Christman wrote.

I just hope they don't let it drag on too long.

With all the movement, it could allow an opportunity for a league sooner. We’ll see. I’m sure they’re trying to get some sort of affiliate arrangement, if nothing else, until a full invite is available.

RE: Latest on Chicago State's Pursuit for League Membership
I’ve been looking through what I can find, and here’s the latest “rumors” for Chicago State. Again, all of this could change with the massive change in conference membership recently.

It’s already been previously reported that the Cougars have had an invitation from the Horizon League for their tennis programs — which pending BoT approval will be accepted. Additionally, their soccer programs are also being considered by the Horizon League.

Also, the MEAC has reportedly offered associate membership in any sports the conference offers which would include: XC (m&w), TF (m&w), basketball (m&w), volleyball, and men’s golf.
Annual membership fee is $35k.. and again, it’s merely an associate offer so nothing permanent. If so, they’d have a home for all sports next year except women’s golf.

The BoT isn’t scheduled to meet again until December

Well, that's good. I wish it was full membership. But Chicago State can compete well in that league in many sports as they continue to improve. I wasn't really even expecting this from the MEAC, but they need members. Ideally, more chaos ensues and a more central league, like the OVC needs members and Chicago can have a better hand to be able to play.

We just need to get into a league where we can compete.

Todor— I’m with ya on the OVC. With all the changes going on, that’d be great for the Cougars if OVC extended an invite. Plus, they have beach volleyball! Perfect time to consider that addition. MEAC would fit a number of ways with CSU but that’s still a ton of travel. Another conference of necessity unless a Midwest division comes out of it.

Pappy— I agree. I think they could do well, in time, in the OVC as their investment grows. But they’d compete pretty immediately in the MEAC.

Additionally, the article references talks of a potential OVC and Southland merger.. but states it’s now unlikely to occur due to McNeese State staying in the Southland.

I agree. Their next BoT meeting is December 6th so I’m guessing we’ll hear a little more then about it!

I have my preferences, of course, but I really don't care where we land, as long as it is a league where we can be at least quasi-competitive and where we can put down roots and build up some rivalries.

With the Loyola move, that shakes up things in Chicago a little more. The more shake ups the better for Chicago State. Even if you're out of the footprint of a given conference, being easy to get to, and in a major market are two of your strengths.

As things stand at this moment, which conferences are the most likely to happen for us?

Chicago State update - utilizing Ohio Valley & Southland as benchmarks

It is going to be key for them to announce a football plan and get 'moving' on it. If those are the leagues, that means they are looking at 63 scholarship football and not the non-scholarship Pioneer League

Hmm. Given the competition for sports fans' dollars in the Chicago area, I don't see any way that a football program could be in the black. Just one man's opinion. I also follow the Little Rock program, which currently is non-football. They also did a feasibility study in the last couple of years and concluded it was not feasible, since the U of A is a virtual monopoly in the state.

Are you sure about Basketball? I didn't know the NCAA allowed associates in that sport. I thought it is THE core sport. Belonging to a conference in that sport means you are a full member.

Of course Chicago State was a "full member" of the WAC but under contract rather than equity partner. So who knows?

Anyone know anything about associates in M& W Basketball?

I’m sure that’s what I read from CollegeAD. I know a lot of conferences make their own determinations regarding “full” members must have certain sports.. haven’t seen anything about that being an NCAA requirement (not that it means it isn’t).
