Trivia -- Jack Benny had a butler named Rochester who for a short time hr had a brother named Birmingham.

...Newman wrote this song.

The problem is people inventing a false history for the song and then the accompanying outrage. I don’t think it’s that great a song but the misplaced outrage annoys me

No one has invented a false anything. Just listen to the album. Just listen to the *song*

The "outrage" isn't because Newman used a certain word on the album, it's because it's not a quaint song that is painting a good picture of Birmingham and the South. If you can't figure out that it's making fun of Birmingham I can't help you, and maybe we should keep it after all because Newman was right

You can think the song should go for every reason listed and that doesn't mean you're "outraged."

Just looking around two weeks in, hardly anyone sings this thing. It's mostly an eyeroll.

Ok, tried it. Fine. No problem trying something. I'd venture to say most fans either don't like it or are indifferent. The handful who do like it are outnumbered bigtime by those who are indifferent or don't like it. It's not gonna catch on. No one will miss it. Move on. Especially move on because it makes Speedy even more annoying than he already was ...

We have nice things because we did not settle, because we did not shut up and just go along with what the athletic department and university administration tried to ram down our throats. The Sard-Verbinnen report said we'd just find other colleges to root for. Who would you have been cheering for on Saturday, had Demivee not led us into the streets?

I don't really care much about a song I can easily ignore. But I poured out every ounce to make The Return happen. So don't go telling me "this is why we can't have nice things." The Vocal Few are the reason we have them.

Well said. Shut Up and Show Up is UAB's version of this:

bunker mentality
: a state of mind especially among members of a group that is characterized by chauvinistic defensiveness and self-righteous intolerance of criticism

It was spouted on this board all during the Callaway Error and it is as much full of **** now as it was then. Time to uncircle the wagons and and climb out of the bunker. The fans are why this program is still alive. Instead of telling great fans to Shut and Show Up (and Pay Up), why not tell UAB to LISTEN UP.

100%

Listen to the fans. We don’t like or want the song as a whole. Do something else. Sweet Caroline wasn’t forced upon Boston, they embraced it randomly and it became a thing.

Newman is not a racist, he is in fact trying to STOP racism with the song. You have to look at the time and era it was written. He needed it to be jarring, he need it to shake people to hear the message. It is sad now that the people helping fight for the cause aren't being heard due to the age they wrote it in. I honestly feel if he wrote it again today, he would still include that word so that it also would shake people and wake them up.

Please please please look at context and message, not just the words or what someone told you it said. It is very clear Newman hated racism, hated the way the South was then and wanted a change.

Still scrap the song through, it sucks for the purpose it is trying to be thrown on us

So let me get this straight. You guys say the song was meant to call out racism in Birmingham during the civil rights era. And you are against that? No, wait you’re against the song because it was against racist Birmingham? Wait, shouldn’t you be FOR a song like that?

Randy Newman is in your heads right now, destroying you with contradiction.

The song was meant to help fight against racism. The mocking chorus then is the Birmingham we want now. We should embrace it. Some of you are fighting your own beliefs, cancelling a song by a non-racist who was fighting racism. Do you even know which side you’re on?

No, quite a few people have been saying that Birmingham’s chorus is showing that the racist white man from Birmingham had his head in the sand saying Birmingham was great when terrible things were happening all around.

I’m just saying if the song was a part of trying to shine a light on racism, then we should embrace it, especially because UAB in many ways is and can be the embodiment of the racial change the songwriter was hoping for at that time.

Our school is very diverse (winning awards for that fact), and so is our fan base. It has to be seen as quite an advancement from the way things in Birmingham were at time that song was written.

Birmingham was written to explain the main character of the album more than an attack on Birmingham.

I'd like to hear from the students what they would want to hear. Get the student section rowdy and their passion feeds the crowd.

If the song is lame, why does background or meaning of the song matter? I’d easily replace it with “song of the south” by Alabama. Moreso, if I wasn’t a crappy DJ(which I’m not), I wouldn’t have to ask fans what they like. I think we know who isn’t getting the aux cord on the next road trip.

Since the transition of qtrs take forever, play the 7 minute version of Rubberband man by the Spinners

There is no way this song is ever going to get anyone rowdy

The lameness of the song really should be enough, it sucks as a rally song. The background of it making fun of the idiots of Birmingham is just another straw on the camel's back

Let's just embrace our struggle and go with a shortened mix of Killing in the Name by Rage Against Machine.

25,000+ chanting **** You I Won't Do What You Tell Me would be a non-traditional tradition like no other.

The song is slow, boring, and corny. The vast majority of people do not like it just for those reasons. It'll never get anyone hype. I get the attempt, but it fell flat. Throw in the fact that the song has a questionable message/portrayal of Birmingham in the lyrics, and it should be gone gone gone..

Song of the south is a decent suggestion. It's a song that most people will be familiar with and is quite catchy.
