If the MWC went after 2 Central Time Zone.....
If the MWC went after 2 Central Time Zone schools, who would they be? Would they pay the exit fee for them to leave their existing conference?

I would think they would attempt to sink or do major damage to the American and you gun hard for SMU and Tulsa.

My preference would be Rice and SMU. The conference would likely prefer SMU and Tulsa. If only 2, I would be okay with any of the following two: North Texas, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, or UTSA. I’m assuming at least 1 Texas school and nothing East of Texas.

Why Tulsa? Much better options than Tulsa!
We already have 1 low enrollment student body with AF, don’t need one that is the lowest enrollment of all of FBS

I'd say let SMU pick the 2nd CTZ school, at least if that was the only way to get the Mustangs.

Until the B12 stuff gets settled what incentive would there be for SMU to move the MWC? I can see scenarios where maybe if the B12 added Memphis and USF maybe they'd consider it, even then I wouldn't guarantee it, but why would they pay that buyout now?

SMU and UTSA probably make the most sense, although one could make an argument for SMU and Rice or SMU and Tulsa.

Frankly I don't see the add value without SMU. Settling for just CUSA schools without an AAC sort of says you will be below the AAC 2.0.

And I'm of the opinion there is no chance in hell that SMU switches conferences. That is not a better situation for them, and so many MWC games are in CBSSN (=invisible).

Who would your 2 be? Tulsa has WAC history and been with SMU for a long time (WAC > CUSA > AAC) so they make a good pair. Rice would be my choice but commitment to athletics is nearly absent. UTSA is an up-and-comer with room to grow. North Texas may be the next best after SMU but they share a market so they may be a strike.

Your premise is correct. The XII would need to make a move on (likely) Memphis and South Florida. That would leave the AAC at East Carolina, Navy (football-only), SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, and Wichita St (non-football).

Football: 3 CST, 3 EST
Basketball: 4 CST, 2 EST

The conference could expand with decent schools or SMU could see the more stable MWC as an option. My preference would be Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, and Wichita St for 16 in football and 16 in basketball - Hawaii as football-only and Wichita St as non-football.

I’d think Navy would return to independence with East Carolina and Temple expanding the AAC into an East Coast best-of-the-rest conference.

The answer depends entirely upon whether one assumes AAC schools are open to moving.

If AAC schools were in play, I'd expect the MWC to do exactly what the AAC tried to do but in reverse: go after SMU and Tulsa. And Wichita State too, to balance Hawaii.

If no AAC schools were in play, and if the MWC were dead-set on expanding instead of stand pat, I think the invitations would go to North Texas and UTSA. Rice is too far east and doesn't care enough about athletics. And while I like Texas State better than UTSA institutionally, I would expect the MWC to opt for UTSA based on its recent football performance.

Because over the past decade Tulsa has been stronger on the field and on the court than Rice, UTSA, UTEP and Texas State. It also has a larger athletics budget ($43 million) than any of them.

So if you can land either SMU or North Texas, you pair them with Tulsa. The only possibly superior option is to pair SMU and North Texas together, but if you do that you're doubling up in the same market.

I don’t think any AAC teams will move to MWC. The money and exposure is better east (2/3 of the US population is east of the Mississippi). I also think SMU, Tulane, Tulsa plus Rice make a nice pod of similar programs. And to appease Navy, Rice will be invited as the second Texas team. I know Rice don’t draw Houston but Navy in Houston will, SMU should and Tulane might.

That effectively leaves UNT and UTSA. Both fits in better with the MWC than Rice and both reside near/in major population centers. While the CTZ extends further east, there really isn’t another program that are clearly better than these two whether it be up to North Dakota or eastward to Louisiana/Arkansas.

I get that but those are still the two best candidates from Texas.

Whoever they are it's fairly obvious the Colorado State AD thinks they need to get in the CTZ.

UTEP is not a Top 5 candidate. Behind North Texas, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, and UTSA.

Yeah, Tulsa has a very difficult situation. The low enrollment means very few fans. Plus, many if not most of Tulsa's students are International or out of State and they do not stick around.

Also, most football fans in Tulsa are either OU or OSU fans. All of that is hard to overcome. I would not be surprised to see TU drop football and concentrate on basketball and bring back baseball, which they previously had great success at. .

This. MWC should not even consider moving into the central time zone unless SMU is joining.

And, I don’t see SMU doing that. SMU is in an incredibly tough spot athletically — their athletic profile is much more like the AAC teams that are moving to the Big 12 than the teams that are remaining in the AAC, but the Big 12 already has a member in the DFW area and will now have four teams in Texas, so SMU is never going there. But… moving to the MWC is not a way out of that box for SMU. They’re in that same impossible spot whether they are in the AAC or MWC.
