When the PAC 12 was making their play for a raid of the Big XII, for example, they didn’t just stop at 2 teams. Granted, there’s a significant difference between the PAC and the MW, and at least part of the reason for making a larger play was probably to make those CTZ teams comfortable in having a decent number of local opponents.

If you are aiming for CTZ games, if you only have two host schools in that area then they’re going to be in all those games (at least the ones originating there). That’s a media advantage for them over their western brethren, and questionable as to whether the same teams being half of the slate would be attractive to viewers.

If I were to be in charge of MW CTZ expansion and had a mandate of two teams only, I’d probably aim for SMU and Rice. Just like the Big XII with TCU and Houston, they wouldn’t have one of the top two brands in the state, but they’d actually BE in those two key markets. There’d be local coverage and local prospects would have hometown options.in the MW to play for or visit. But even with teams on those two markets, it’s still only 2 CTZ teams.

You hit the key points. “Only 2” won’t cut it and Rice and SMU are more-or-less musts. Throw in Tulane, Tulsa, and Wichita St and you got a really good CST content.
The front range schools aren’t interested in Kansas, Oklahoma or Louisiana. They are concerned with Texas as they is where they want to recruit, play and market themselves.

I understand that. I just don’t see getting into Texas without being “forced” to take others. Especially if you want SMU.

It wasn’t just part of the reason for the Pac to invite 5 central teams, it was the ENTIRE reason, to make UT feel that they wouldn’t be isolated if they joined the Pac. UT was the only “critical” part of the “mass”.

Even if there are more than two MWC members interested in Texas, and we’ve seen no public indication that there are, there’s no need to make potential Texas CUSA teams comfortable, because they would gladly accept an MWC invitation even if no one else in Texas was joining them. They don’t have anything close to Longhorn-sized leverage.

Well, the other massive component for the Pac-12 -- and I'm not sure which time you're referencing their play to raid the Big XII -- is the divide. And I brought that up for the MWC as well.

The Pac-12 has six pairs. They can't add TWO Central teams for seven pairs, because you can't make divisions without splitting a pair. They could add like Hawai'i and Oklahoma State for 14. But they can't add Oklahoma State and TCU for 14.

They HAD to take four teams to form the Pac-16 in each era:

Colorado & Texas Tech; Texas & Texas A&M, Oklahoma & Oklahoma State to form the Pac-16 East (with Arizona & Arizona State).

Oklahoma State & TCU or Texas Tech, Iowa State & Kansas; or whichever four to form the Pac-16 East (with Utah & Colorado and Arizona & ASU).

Right, the reason they were willing to go to 16 before was because of who they were getting as members (Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Colorado) and Oklahoma State and Texas Tech made the politics work.

Texas, A&M and Colorado are AAU members, with Oklahoma capable of reaching that status (and with a goal to).

At the time, people said Texas couldn't leave because of the "Tech problem" for the same reason they couldn't leave the SWC without Tech and Baylor.

If they expanded by two they realistically land UTSA and North Texas.

In a world where CUSA, the MAC, Sun Belt, 1-A Independents, and FCS call-ups hold their ground, they land SMU and Tulsa under the growing threat of the AAC dissolving, but the chance of that happening isn't very realistic. Liberty would jump on that ship so fast passing around millions of dollars to each AAC member, who supported them, that there's simply no way the AAC dissolves as long as the Big XII doesn't expand further, and even then it's a stretch.

So if UTSA actually has their choice between the American and Mountain West, which one would they or should they prefer?
