When will SMU be expanding your FB stadium? What specific additions are planned?

RE: Questions for SMU Fans
We can close in the horseshoe for an additional 8,000 seats and possibly add a second deck, but that is trickier due to University Park restrictions. Historically our attendance does not require anything beyond 40,000. Even in our best years we consistently averaged around 32,000 fans for our games that did not have Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, etc. helping to boost our attendance with large visiting crowds.

But why? The grassy end zone is very popular. And the stadium is designed to hold 32,000 without the end zone.

Sounds like we are expecting a Power 5 invite, ala TCU's Amon Carter Stadium. $50,000,000 is close to what the stadium cost new.

RE: Questions for SMU Fans
Do you have a link to the specific plans, or is this insider info? I watched the press conference of the Board and read the release, but could not find any specific details on new athletic construction.

I’m wondering about some of these plans. There’s something going on at SMU. Given all the conference realignment news they’ve been eeeeerily quiet about everything.

RE: Questions for SMU Fans
There's a difference between upgrading it and expanding it. Ford is due for an upgrade. A number of things, from concessions to facilities to the soundsystem, need to be upgraded.

But at this point there isn't really a reason to to expand just yet. We have not sold out a conference game since the SWC and that's with a 32k seat stadium. If we close out the end zone it would bring capacity to about 42-44k and we could also conceivably build a deck on the visitors side for another 15-20k. I'm more for building the deck than enclosing the end zone, but we'll see.

But upgrades are coming soon.

RE: Questions for SMU Fans
It sounds to me like a new fountain. Perhaps some people have money to burn and want to leave a legacy. IMHO Ford is already the best on campus stadium in the American, with the possible exception of Houston's TDECU.

RE: Questions for SMU Fans
I think Ford is fine without expanding- we don’t sell it out as is. If we need a bigger venue, then cotton bowl can host a game or two each season.

RE: Questions for SMU Fans
I wish we would demolish it and redo it. We need to eliminate the excessive amount of end zone seating and dig deeper to make it more vertical and at least make it a more intimidating atmosphere for the opponents while respecting UP height restrictions.

You could build a deck on the east side and keep the height no more than the press box on the west side. But why?

No reason too deep, really. Sideline seats are, generally speaking, more expensive than end zone seats and simply enclosing the end zone for a complete 'O' shaped stadium would be a little boring, IMO.

Build a cascading waterfall in place of the grass in the end zone and add an upper deck.

Well, yeah, there's strong vocal support for a sorority hot-tub on the SMU board, and, well, I'm not against it....

Is it a bikini mandatory hot tub?
