12-11 in the past 23 Conference Games
That is Jason Candle's MAC record. He's been in the program since 2009. He's been head coach since the bowl game in 2015. He is paid over a million dollars a year in the MAC. His teams have won 1 MAC title against a terrible Akron team and are 1-3 in bowl games. Toledo has some of the best facilities and resources in the conference. Since 2012, Toledo has had 1 recruiting class ranked 4th in the MAC, 2 ranked second, and 7 ranked #1, and all of that has resulted in a 12-11 record over the past 23 conference games. Although NIU appears to have some nice talent, 12 of its starters were freshmen. Those 12 freshman, and the rest of NIU, dominated Toledo's offense at Homecoming. An offense coordinated by none other than Jason Candle. After all of that, Toledo's million dollar man had this to say. "The narrative that somebody is just better than everybody else and you're going to win by 20 points every week, that's out the window. We can stop with all that. This is MAC West football". Expecting championships and beating a team half comprised of freshmen should be the narrative, except all Toledo gets is coach speak and losses.

+1

Time to move on from Jason Candle!

If our coach doesn’t understand that his job was to build a program that can separate itself from others in the MAC (or at least the West Division), then perhaps he ought not to be our coach.

You know there is something wrong with the play cling when we are 1-10 for 3rd down and 0-3 in 4th down tries. We can't stay on the field or win the field position battle. Just think what our D could do if they wern't on the field all day.

You hit the nail squarely on the head, but, what do we do now? I'm not sure if other fan bases analyze their teams as much as we do? I honestly thought we would be 5-1 at this juncture. Toledo has handed Coach Candle the best facilities, the best fan base in The MAC, the best assistant coaches, a large number of transfers from P5 schools, the recruits/talent, and over $1,000,000 per year salary and this is the best he can do? I don't ever condone firing anybody, but, it's time for him to move on and name Coach Kehres the HC. Candle was given the keys to a Cadillac and has turned our program into a used Chevy.

I don't know what we do. I mean, it's not like Toledo or any MAC school can buyout a contract like his. I don't expect him to degrade himself, admit publicly it's not working and leave. Maybe we should have one those interventions like they do on television. We can sit outside Larimer in a circle of folding chairs, maybe some coffee on the side and invite Coach Candle to sit. Group: "Hey coach, please, come and join us". CC: "It's tough out there. One game at a...." Group: "Shhhh. There there. It's okay. It's okay. This is your first step.".. lol I don't know.

I believe your idea as successor would be the correct move. Coach Kehres is a proven winner. There’s a lot of anti Mount Union fans on here but Kehres has done an excellent job with our defense. Good by to mr Candle

I agree it's time for JC to move on, but that won't happen until we get our new AD. MOB won't fire JC. Coach Kehres could be a great move. just to promote from within..

I don’t think we need Kehres! I think we’ve had enough of Mt Union cast offs. We definitely have QB and OL issues. Northern had a pretty decent QB …….transfer from MSU. Good combination of run and pass. Something we only have half of with each of our QBs. The offensive line is horrible (#78/72), plus all of the penalties are not only on Candle, but also his Assets. Maybe if of there is concerted pressure on Candle to leave, he just might.

Let's no forget Kuligowski has probably had something to do with defense's improvement as well. I would have open interviews though. We've had a long run of inhouse successors. It would be nice to see who else is out there as well.

Even though the team gave away another game, UT can still win the division. Only N Illinois is undefeated in the West. They play: BG, CMU, Kent, Ball, Buffalo and W Michigan. I expect they lose at least 3 of those games (Kent, Ball, and W Michigan). With Finn starting at QB going forward, the Toledo offense should at least be a bit better. The UT win over Ball State may turn out to be really big by season's end

That is true. Toledo could still find themselves in a position to win the west. I agree, the QB situation needs settled and the starter needs to be Finn. Last season, I thought Carter had made some progress on touch passes and pocket presence, but this year has not gone well. It can be argued whether it is Carter, coaching, or the O-line, but the bottom line is that Finn gives Toledo a greater ability to move the ball. I don't see a Candle team winning a big game. The track record would indicate that meaningful late season games and Jason Candle victories are an oxymoron. If Toledo cannot afford to get rid of Jason Candle, maybe he will do the right thing and hire an offensive coordinator. Candle did suck it up and fix the defense with new hires. Perhaps he could step away from the play calling and do the same.

And the Rockets would need to take care of business on their end—something we haven’t done well in a few seasons. The Toledo team I’ve seen the past 2 home games won’t beat Central or Western, so our “easier” crossover games (Akron & Ohio) may not even factor in by the time we play them.

I do not understand why Candle does not utilize ALL the talent he has. I'm not sure, but, I didn't see McKinley-Lewis play yesterday. I believe the Georgia Transfer Landers actually caught a pass and do we even have a TE? Remember back in the day when Amstutz would call the TE Seam pass? What in the world happened!?

They're hardly cast-offs. They were extremely successful. Mt. Union isn't the issue. Opening up the search and making sure it is done without presuming the winner is the issue. Making sure all who wish to be candidates know they are in equal running is the issue. Talking about hiring from with-in is exactly the opposite of what anyone should be doing.

Besides which, Kehres has shown a resume as a defensive coach and would possibly be on the quicker tract to follow that to as high a P5 he can, then to HC. He's 45, not a kid.

Like anyone wanting to be top dog, hemay have t separate from the yard that was given to him be it in Ashland or Toledo. Don't expect Kehres to be interested in the Toledo job, particularly if it comes as a result of a non-hire of a close friend.

Not having full, open interviews gave us Candle. I'm sure the new AD will want his own man. I would interview Kuligowski because of what he did at Missouri. No more Mount Union retreads. #1 would be Brian Hartline, one of the best recruiters in the nation at OSU. Doubt we could get him, though.

What's the old expression?, "not dead yet." Candle is still here. I am thinking along the lines that Coach Kuligowski is in his Swan Song. He's made his mark and I'm sure he's made his $$. I'm not so sure he'd take the job if asked. I do think we need to hire from a bigger school (P5) as did Buffalo and CMU. Hartline would be good.

I think it'll all work out after we land another "top recruiting class". /sarcasm

I want Candle and everyone associated with this program gone asap. No holdovers - clean break. Get everyone outta here.

Some good points, in this message string & others. We will be stuck with Candle for 2 more seasons (unless Campbell finds a job for him), which potentially means more of the same, 6-6 seasons (at best), a declining fan base, losing the team, losing some assistant coaches in between…kinda like what we suffered under in Amstutz’s way out (although there was that win at Michigan). In short, things will likely not get better, and may get worse, before we can actually get a new head coach and start the gradual re-building process (say what we will about Beckman, but he did start the rest-build that led to some “almost” seasons” under Campbell before things fizzled out under Candle.

My guess on Hartline is he moves straight to a P5 HC at the lower level and skips a stay in the G5. This is turning into a mess that none of us could have even believed!
