But better and more modern stadium with lesser seats than Legion Field is still a better outcome. Best outcome still would have been an OCS.

Beggars can't be choosy.

True, for right now, but why build for the present? I like the size although I wish the grass berm would have been kept. Didn't really need the extra seating and the extra green would have been nice. Not sure it needed the deck either at this point (even for the Bham Bowl) but probably less costly to add it initially.

Yulman is perfect for a private school. UAB is a large and growing state university. I think 30K would have been thinking too small.

A 30,000 seat stadium that is expandable like Yulman. Again, gotta take what we have which is awesome even if still a tad too big.

the stadium was built for Birmingham not UAB. Birmingham needs a stadium bigger than what UAB needs. Id rather play in an excellent 47,000 seat stadium than a crappy rundown 70,000 seat dump but maybe thats just me.

RE: Attendance
Blame it on marketing. Just need more marketing. I saw a Magic City Classic billboard the other day while driving on the interstate.
In the past we had GAMEDAY ROUTE signs all across the interstate as well to lead to Legion Field. Where are those for Protective Stadium?

We're also a city and not a college town where the only thing to do is a college game and college bars. We need to make UAB games THE thing to do in the city.

If you want better attendance, then say positive things about UAB games, the stadium, and the experience. Invite your friends, family, etc. Normal tickets are pretty cheap and the Family Bundle is a great deal. Marketing is also word of mouth.

RE: Attendance
...still better than most in C-USA... I watched some of the FIU-Charlotte game on ...Thursday night? - and in FIU's 26,000 seat stadium, it was about 10-15 percent occupied at best... thus around 3,000 - 3,500 attendance tops (couldn't even find an 'official attendance total' anywhere)... yeah, FIU is a cellar dweller, but in a town that is at least 3 times larger then The Ham, and an enrollment 2-1/2 times what we have, seems like they could at LEAST have 10,000 there... unless they are still under some crowd restrictions or something (which hasn't been a 'thing' in Florida anyway, unless imposed by the school).

As for US, again there were lots of folks 'mingling' the concourses - lounge area... it seemed to be a bit more crowded in the 103 section as well. As for students, my daughter was going, but has midterms next week, so she decided to study instead... not sure if that was the norm for them, but it did put a dent in the student section for sure... ...and she also noted that lots of the students just hang out tailgating and never actually go in the game - not sure how you can fix that...

That's actually pretty much the norm - especially when the sun it like it was yesterday. Hopefully, the area beneath the scoreboard directly about student seating will help with this as it gets colder.

RE: Attendance
Attendance really didn't seem bad in the stadium. "Home" side was packed in because people were trying to get out of the sun (myself included). I ended up standing in the concourse for most of the game. Sucked to do that because I know it made the crowd look like **** on TV.

Only gripe I have is figuring out how to get the damn crowd involved. I was getting awkward stared for clapping/making noise on FAU's 3rd down. I know UAB sold this new stadium as more of a casual affair (to try and increase attendance I'm sure) but yeesh really need more crowd involvement.

RE: Attendance
Well, UAB is doing better in attendance than current ACC front runner Wake Forest this season. They haven’t had a home game over 30k yet. One of their games was 21k. I’m going to also say a bunch of casual African American viewers in Birmingham went to the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic over a UAB team they can see much more often too.

We’re gonna have to accept that any crowd beyond the diehards who show up every game will include lots of people who aren’t all that invested in the team yet. They will mingle and socialize and eat and drink and even show up late and leave early. They’ll have fun. They’ll come back — with friends. Sometimes they will show up, sometimes they will choose to go to the lake and give away their tickets. It’s ok.

Attendance is fine. There was a lot going on Saturday. You had Homecomings at Miles, Alabama State, and Alabama A&M which all drew well. Plus Auburn/UGA and Alabama with a prime time game

I do imagine that the Tuskegee/Morehouse game had some effect but comic con…. I saw the crowd there. I can say with about 99% certainty that UAB attendance wasn’t hurt by that. If anything, UAB hurt Comic con by taking up so much of the parking lol

And sometimes they will stay from r the entire game and some will eventually become diehards. And the students spending half the game tailgating will be back because it’s a few social gathering. And some will continue to come back after they graduate because of it. We have never had that atmosphere before. This is going to lead to bigger crowds of engaged fans it just takes time

I was walking near a full on dragon costume and thought they were coming to the UAB game. Alas, they turned and went into the BJCC… slightly disappointed

Since we're all (grads) in the Alumni Society now, be nice if they would hook us up with some discounted Homecoming tix.
