If they do go AAC that seems a bit surprising to me after all of the posts indicating Marshall really wants an east coast league. Spending way more money to join an unstable league, little hope of recouping costs, and worse travel situation than what they have now - bold strategy for sure. But the AAC does sponsor mens soccer so they have that going for them.

I would prefer a new conference with CUSA East and SBC East teams over the AAC.

But the new AAC is definitely better than current CUSA or the SBC.

How is it better???

How is that even a question? How in the world do you think the SBC is better than this proposed AAC or any version of the AAC for that matter.

Way more TV money even after the upcoming pay cut.

Multi bid basketball league even after the big 3 leave.

Way better TV deal in terms of exposure, even after the upcoming cut.

Way better brand name recognition for the AAC teams.

Way better bowl tie ins.

Way better in all other sports as well.

Better average attendance in football and basketball.

Literally, every measure possible, the AAC is better.

Keep in mind that TV contract no longer exists. The league has to negotiate a new deal with ESPN. Meaning less TV games almost certainly

This. Couldn’t agree more. The AAC will not be a better league with those programs, their media package will suffer, and their travel expenses through the roof.

Here's the thing. The AAC could take App alone and knock the brand of the Sunbelt with that one move. And if it keeps their position above the other conferences then that's exactly what they'll do. This scenario you guys keep imagining that you all get better while everyone else gets worse isn't a very realistic one.

Never suggested that. I’m commenting on the tweet. If that’s the way the aac goes, it won’t be a better league. If they were serious about maintaining their position, they would lop the heads off conferences around them… doesn’t appear they are doing that if the tweet is true.

This lineup is the NCAAF equivalent of Axl Rose going out and getting a random guitarist, drummer, keyboardist and bassist and calling themselves Guns 'n Roses.

I agree. You really do have to wonder what the renegotiated contract looks like though. If they still get all that money and great bowl games even after losing those team, I'll be confused/really jealous. I just can't see it happening. Aside from Memphis and SMU, you lost nearly every big name school you had. It just doesn't make sense to give them the treatment they got after they lose those teams.

ESPN can walk away if they want. The AAC can’t deliver what was in the contract.

ESPN can pick any number it wants and AAC’s options are accept it or walk and see what CBSSN and Facebook will pay.

And I have no doubt App would move if the conference still consisted of ECU/Marshall/Charlotte.

Matt Brown drops a "bomb shell"
Discussing this with someone today I was asking the rhetorical question "Is even $40M that important to a President with a $1B operating budget?"

And the person I was talking to had the best one line response I have heard. "Athletics is a rounding error"

Exactly. USM combined with the 4 Brown mentioned would take the legs out of CUSA. Taking JMU would remove the best call up on the market.

I'd MAYBE even consider adding ODU and WKU as well. That would put Troy in the West with the other Gulf State schools. Adding these two would be more about hoops than anything though.

Did Aresco just take a peak at the SBC wish list and decide to target them? Seems lazy for such a P6 commissioner.

App would be a substantial loss and I'd wish them the best, but they aren't the entire Sun Belt. Still some other solid upward programs along with traditionally good football programs. That's why the SBC building an identity and niche for itself is important. No matter who leaves you'll always have an identity as a league, thus will always give you ground to stand on in terms of bringing in similar schools.

While you are Absolutely right, too many things would have to line up for it to turn out that well for AppSt… unless ECU, Marshall, Charlotte and AppSt advanced the concept together and stuck to it.

Better average attendance in football and basketball.

The programs y’all are losing just happen to be “the face of the franchise”. All three of them are in major markets with tremendous brand value and recognition. Not to mention, they have been tremendous in football or basketball.

The Media contract WILL get renegotiated. I have heard all the way down to $2.8-$3.1M per team. That will also cover an escape clause if Memphis, or SMU leave.

Don’t forget, ESPN didn’t renegotiate the deal when UConn left. So if you think about it, this media deal was drawn up when Houston, Cincinnati, UCF, and UConn were all in the league. I can’t imagine ESPN not renegotiating.

Even if its cut in half its still the best G5 media deal.

Per normal, you are talking out your @$$ hoping you sound knowledgeable when we all know you’re not

So if it gets cut in half, that would make it $3.5 million per year. You don't think that's better than CUSA or the SBC? Per normal, you guys get upset when someone doesn't beat the drum about the SBC being the best G5 in the future.

You’re talking assumptions yet not taking into account how ESPN would renegotiate SBC tv contract as well. Like I said, talking out your @$$ to sound smart

You don’t have to beat the SBC drum. We are just tired of all the noise from all the other instruments you are playing… all the noise, noise, noise. You’ll bang on tong-tinglers, blow your foo-flounders, you'll crash on jang-jinglers, and bounce on boing-bounders! Then you’ll sit down to a feast, and you’ll feast feast, feast, feast! You'll eat CUSA pudding and rare AAC roast beast, which is something we cannot stand in the least.
