I think the AAC should start by adding 2 and stand pat for a bit. See if any of the hot names like Coastal Carolina start stacking big seasons a la Boise, or maybe Liberty "evolves" in their policies and philosophy enough to become politically palatable as an addition. Also leaves the possibility of a western division open, with an eye on expanding to 16 teams if that happens. I think UAB and Marshall are the perfect additions to get to 10 and further survey the landscape.

Marshall is a known entity, has history with most of the current AAC, has a good fan base, and has been consistently good since the late 80's in Division I-AA aside from the Mark Snyder years. Their basketball program isn't phenomenal, but has been solid in recent years and wouldn't be a total drag on the NET/RPI stuff. UAB has the new stadium, is in a football-crazed market, and is good in both revenue sports.

So if I'm Aresco/the school presidents and I can't entice any of the MWC schools or Army, go with the 2 safe additions in UAB and Marshall and stay on your toes. I know some say there is strength in numbers, but I don't see any need to get to 12, 14, or 16 in a way that waters down the strength of the conference.

When I put those 10 names down and look at it, I could warm up to that conference while Aresco continues to work on the western division and keep an eye out for hot programs in the east. I know it's essentially C-USA v2.0 all over again, but these are all stable programs (aside from UAB's near football death, which doesn't seem to be an issue anymore).

Why do so many folks put Navy in the Western Division in various hew versions of the AAC?

Because that was where they were and what they wanted.

Exactly why you don't do that. Who's dying to recreate that league? Aresco is being paid a lot of money to figure out something better. He's probably going to fail, but there's no reason to rush to add those 2 with C-USA's exit fee rules pretty much can wait till nearly the last minute if that's the play you end up having to make.

Western Division is Navy's preference.

Our strategic objective is a national profile - Western footprint plus our eastern location + cross-overs gets that far better than Eastern division, a couple games against western teams at NMCMS and MAYBE a couple trips to Texas/Tennessee a season.

That's a preference, expressed since the AAC started looking at divisions before we came on board in '15 -- not in the membership agreement of Jan 2012 or ironclad.

Dumb question -- when Navy sports teams fly to away games, do they just fly on a Navy transport plane? I have no idea if they even have a runway at the Naval Academy. Just curious!

UAB’s imposed death penalty actually makes them a prime candidate for the American, with SMU and Temple as fellow previous road kill.

They believe they compete recruiting wise favorably with Smu Tulsa and Tulane. Playing in Texas is a plus.

I may be reporting fake news, but I saw somewhere today that they had over 20 players from the DFW region on their team.

Grab 2 is best for now. UAB + someone ESPN wants. They all have warts but hopefully, with time they will turn out better.

I like Buffalo/FAU/UTSA but all have warts. The Marshalls and USMs can never compete without academic risks which AAC should steer clear of.

No. Definitely no.

Navy Football in particular is getting $0 federal dollars. Neither appropriated tax dollars, nor "non-appropriated government funds" (things like commissary or Exchange or true Navy MWR dollars, which are not Congressional appropriated tax dollars but have similar levels of oversight).

The Naval Academy Athletic Association is a 501.c.3 and is about 97% self-funded (conf. distributions, tickets, Army-Navy money, sponsorships, donations etc). The 3% that we haven't whittle down to 0 is because some of the coaches / staff of non-football teams are USNA staff or faculty in the Phys Ed or other departments and things like their travel funding can be hard to extricate.

Navy Football charters with Southwest. When we went out to Hawaii in '18, we had to go commercial and the Washington Post did a full story on what the football operations staff was doing to minimize the impact of that travel.
I don't know how much the other sports charter vs fly commercial to away games -- but with most sports in the Patriot League, most PL travel is bus trips.
Football actually goes by bus to Temple or Army-Navy in Philly.

Definitely no military air is used for the teams.

22 from Texas. It is the #1 state represented of the 30+DC on the roster. The next-most represented state on Navy’s roster is Maryland with 16.
7 are on the current three-deep. Starting senior wide receiver and captain Mychal Cooper (San Antonio) and third string wide receiver Cal Long (Austin) are the only offensive player on the depth chart from Texas.
Starting sophomore linebacker Will Harbour (Frisco), second-team sophomore free safety Marcus Moore (Houston), third-team junior defensive tackle John Brand (Flower Mound) and third-team sophomore corner Willie Collins V (Mansfield) are the defensive players on the depth chart from Texas.
Junior kicker Bijan Nichols (Heath), backup holder Daniel Davies (Richardson) and punter Riley Riethman (Keller) are the special teams players on the depth chart from Texas.

I don't know how many are from the Metroplex.

So preacher you think if/when Boise gets an invite the MWC isn't going to have their TV deal slashed massively? Who do you think is worth more to the TV value of their league Memphis or Boise?

Oh you mean like the ones on the MWC boards that think the AAC will crumble from losing UC,UCF and UH?
The MWC won’t crumble if they lose Boise, but their tv contract will take a hit, making it more likely teams from both conferences might look at joining

What other options are there that have baseball as well? Wofford, Wright State, UNC Greensboro? Our basketball is taking a huge hit, we have to address it some way. And Aresco said he was going to address it.

The Big 12 is one component that is screwing with the AAC and to a lesser extent the MWC. I think another is the fact is the current tv contract for the MWC expiring after the 2025 season is another factor. The MWC schools can wait to see what will happen to the AAC over the next 24 months in regards to possible teams leaving for the Big 12 and then determine whether or not it is feasible to either stay put or go east.

Meanwhile, the MWC will find out what they can fetch from a new tv deal with or without Boise and see if it matches or passes the AAC current tv deal without UC, UCF, Houston, and possibly Memphis. Reality is time is on the MWC side, it's the AAC that has to act sooner rather than later.

I think the Western door is closed for now. I was rooting for the AAC getting 2 to 4 MWC schools. I honestly don't know the best play now.

If no MWC schools are coming, the best plays might be to add UAB and say Marshall and stay at 10. Then if the Big 12 takes BSU, the MWC will crumble at that time and you can merge with the best of the mountain west. If you expand past 10, you probably foreclose the possibility of ever getting MW teams in the future.

The MWC isn't going to crumble losing Boise. Hell, I think the majority of the MWC schools would love to see Boise get the hell up outta there. Get a couple of Texas schools to replace Boise and the MWC will be fine.
