Realignment speculation
I believe after the MW rejection, the AAC settled on UAB and UTSA. These programs ran the numbers and UAB could afford the move while UTSA could not. By UTSA rejecting the AAC that opened the door for Marshall. Now I believe Marshall is crunching the numbers, the question is can they afford it? I’m not sure. If I had to bet then I would say NO. If Marshall can’t make the jump I think that opens the door for another CUSA school. I also think this drives Marshall to the belt where they could compete financially. The question then becomes who would Marshall’s rejection open the door for? Someone with money, but also someone with athletic success?

Rice, Buffalo, UNCC, and ODU would be my guess on "who's next"

If I’m choosing between those 4 I’m going with Buffalo as far as athletics and academics combined. But facilities and geography hurt them. Not great fan support as well.

The rest check most of the boxes but aren’t exactly known for their strong football.

RE: Realignment speculation
So it will be interesting to see if the AAC actually invites someone, anyone soon. If not then I suspect there is something to the notion that they are reworking their westward expansion effort to include up to 6 mwc schools to satisfy both espn and the western schools to have a comfort level with a western wing to the AAC.

RE: Realignment speculation
Someone remind me again why a school would want to significantly increase their athletic budget to play Tulane, Temple, ECU, Navy, and Tulsa and a slight chance to play Memphis, SMU, & USF (all three could bolt before you are even admitted)? Does the added conference revenue even come close to adding up to the significantly increased budget expenditures? I'm sorry but I was taught math before common core came along so maybe I'm missing something.

Buffalo would be the add that Temple could live with and the privates in the west could stomach, if I had to guess.

Realignment speculation
You couldn't post this in the other marshall AAC thread ?

You guys are all getting ahead of yourselves. Landon is a hack and doesn't know anything yet you are going on his rumor as gospel. The AAC has probably talked to every school in cusa and then some.

Heck an ESPN analyst on a podcast yesterday said Fau and UAB are in for sure and the question is who else ? There are rumors all over but nobody knows

You are close but no cigar. It's a two vs four conundrum for the AAC right now. It is about who can afford it and who is willing to make the commitment on a bright future with plenty of uncertainty. Some have safer prospects, others are hoping the decisions of other programs don't derail their plans. WE will know a lot more by the end of this weekend. I don't foresee an announcement until end of October.

Some Marshall posters are already on the AAC board posting their opinions like they're already in the conference...and UAB posters too! Lol

Only time I go to that board is to laugh at something really stupid or sad, sometimes it's the same thing. That or one of them just got their rears kicked from someone they think lower than them, and they are bellyaching. Last time I was there was a few hours after the Marshall Navy game.

Have never posted on that board and haven't posted on the MAC board since we left.

And fans of the same school complain about travel to Texas but are willingly signing up for Tulsa, New Orleans and very likely San Antonio or Houston?

RE: Realignment speculation
Normally, I would have said that this opens the door for FAU but the rumors have already held that we were among the short list of AAC candidates.

FAU may actually have an advantage in monetary terms over both UTSA and Marshall. We are in the middle of well-to-do Boca Raton, filled with FAU alumni. We can just inquire the community to give us some money and millions just fall into our coffers, it seems. To wit, we had collected more than $4M for athletics in August, alone.

UTSA has not rejected an offer. That is an internet rumor. Hell, UTSA approached AAC expressing their interest and has hosted an on-campus visit.

If UTSA can’t swing it, then it raises the question of whether it’s worth swinging in the first place.

The basketball facilities, if you can call them that may hold both UTSA and FAU back. UTSAs so called arena has to be in the bottom 5 of those schools who are IA. It's one of the most hidius things Ive seen. Tulane and UTSA would be in a run off for the worst. And well FAUs arena Ive seen better DII arenas.

Even with the loss of Cincy, UCF and Houston, with Memphis, Wichita State, SMU and Tulsa they are looking for the right basketball adds to keep them a multi-bid conference.

You aren't missing anything. The AAC lineup is just as weak as CUSA's. There's no way I'd increase my budget by $10m to play those schools.

True to a point. Marshall academics and small market losing population like crazy and budget concerns may hold them back too. It's all speculation

But a facility improvement is a lot easier to improve than those things mentioned above

You can bring up positives and faults with any school
