Not sure how men's soccer (currently 10-1) could not crack the top 25 based on their win vs #3 WVU today. The rankings from United Soccer Coaches come out every Tuesday at 12:00NOON.

Also consider some other action today of ranked and "unranked" teams ("Unranked" like NIU who have received votes but not cracked the top #25):

Ranked:
#10 SMU: Lost to Memphis
#25 Providence: Tied DePaul
#3 Duke: Lost to #13 Pittsburgh
#21 Clemson: Lost to Notre Dame

Unranked:
Akron: Lost to Georgia State
SDSU: Lost to UCLA
Central AR: Lost to Stetson
UNC: Lost to Wake Forest

Huskies won Big Central Soccer Conference tournament title in 1989 and Mid-Continent Conference championship in 1990, plus Illinois Governor's Cup in 1988 during Roy's tenure. Steve Simmons crew went to NCAA in 2006, winning first round match over Loyola (1-0 ot) and losing second round at No. 7 overall seed Indiana (1-0). The Eric Luzzi-coached Huskies made it back to NCAA in 2011 beating Western Illinois (3-0) in the first round and losing second-round to No. 2 overall seed Creighton (3-0).
Coach Dave Bucher really developed the program earning very first NCAA berth in 1973 but losing to SIU-Edwardsville (3-0).

Cool, I know my memory wasn't totally off.

Congrats on the 10-1 mark so far and the 2 Nil win against #4 WVU. Also it looks like your coach has built your team the right way.

NIU breaking into the Top 25 still might be a chore. Since last week NIU was only receiving 2 votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. There were 12 other schools receiving more votes. I realize a few of them lost though also.

United Soccer Coaches Poll Receiving Votes for Oct 3rd
Quote:Also receiving votes: Santa Clara University (49), San Diego State University (42), University Of Central Arkansas (39), University Of Akron (27), Bowling Green State University (26), Hofstra University (20), University Of North Carolina (19), University of California Santa Barbara (13), Indiana University (8), Virginia Commonwealth University (8), University of North Carolina-Wilmington (3), UCLA (3), Northern Illinois University (2), Oral Roberts University (1)

Ryan Swan was one of 3 finalists for the Marshall job in 2017. It was Ryan Swan (DII Drury HC), Andy Flemming (Xavier HC) and Chris Grassie (DII University Charleston HC). Chris Grassie was hired at Marshall on Jan 10th and Ryan Swan was hired at NIU Jan 23, 13 days later. And poor Andy Flemming is still at X with a 17-31-6 record since 2017.

Going to post this here too.

Ninth straight win and the seventh straight shutout by NIU. The team improves to 10-1 on the season with 32 goals scored and just 3 goals against.

Next match: Saturday 10/16, 7pm CT - #22 NIU hosts defending MAC Champ #17 Bowling Green.

Congrats on cracking the Top 25. It's deserved just didn't know if you could do it from the position you were coming from.

NIU Ranked #22

And you knocked WVU from #3 all the way down to #21.

Thank you! I checked it out and noticed a lot of the teams in the top 25 are east/northeast-based teams. Is that where most of the successful/strong soccer programs are located or is that just how it is playing out this year?

Love seeing Indiana and Notre Dame sitting backseat to NIU in the "also getting votes" crowd. GO HUSKIES!

You are going to see a lot of ACC, BE, CUSA and a few PAC 12 school in there most of the time. With a spattering of other conferences. Right now the MAC has 3 teams in Bowling Green #17, WVU #21 and now NIU at 22. And New Hampshire is having an exceptional year sitting at 12-0 and 4th in the coaches poll.

Poll Breakdown right now:
ACC 4 schools: VA Tech, Pitt, Duke and Clemson
CUSA 3 schools: Marshall, Kentucky and FIU
MAC 3 schools: Bowling Green, WVU and NIU
PAC 12 2 schools: Washington and Oregon State
Big East 2 schools: Georgetown and Providence
AAC 2 schools: Tulsa and SMU
A10 1 school: Saint Louis
BIG 10 1 school: Maryland
MVC 1 school: Missouri State
CAA 1 school: JMU
WCC 1 school: Loyola Marymount
SoCon 1 school: UNCG
Ivy 1 school: Cornell
WAC 1 school: Grand Canyon

Marshall has beat Bowling Green (RV at the time) and Akron (#20 at the time) and Marshall (#6 at the time) had a 2 OT draw with WVU (#4 at the time) 2-2. The former WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc (2006-2019) for some reason refused to schedule Marshall even though at the time neither program was going to hurt the other as neither was in danger of making the NCAAs most years.

The SEC nor B12 doesn't sponsor soccer. Both Kentucky and South Carolina play in CUSA and WVU is in their last year of the MAC. They will join CUSA next year.
