Google & YouTube will cut off ‘climate-change deniers’ from monetizing their content
Quote:Google is pulling the plug on climate deniers on its platform, banning content that contradicts well-established research from the scientific community, the company announced on Thursday.

The tech giant is taking a two-pronged approach, applying to advertisers and publishing partners in Google-served ads that try to promote climate change misinformation on pages and videos, as well YouTube Partner Program creators who try to monetize their climate change misinformation videos, according to a company blog post.

The new rule specifically targets claims that climate change is a "hoax or a scam", claims that deny long-term environmental trends, and claims ignoring significant factors to climate change, like greenhouse gas emissions or humanity's contributions to climate change. Google will continue to allow ads and monetization on climate-related topics, such as informed debates on climate change and verifiable research.

"We'll look carefully at the context in which claims are made, differentiating between content that states a false claim as fact, versus content that reports on or discusses that claim," the company said in the statement.

This follows a similar major move last week from the Google-owned YouTube, which announced it would ban all anti-vaccination content on its site beyond that which dealt with COVID-19. YouTube previously banned misinformation about COVID vaccines last October. Social media companies have generally tried to take a hands-off approach when it comes to content moderation, but have since taken steps to rein in misinformation across platforms.

Google, which is the largest digital-ad seller, has been criticized by Congress and climate change activists for allowing companies and climate-denying interest groups to buy search ads. Inaccurate, monetized climate change videos on YouTube received over 21 million views according to research from nonprofit organization Avaaz in 2020, Bloomberg first reported

The resurrection of the Nazi party. Hope this Hitler gets his dose before millions die.

Where are the patriots. This kind of Goeblesesque control of information can’t be happening in our free country can it?

Its just a matter of time before all these content creators banned and demoneizated on the basis of shoddy unproven "science" band together and take Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook to court in a class action suit that requires these platforms to PROVE the science and "fact check claims" are irrefutable "fact". Spoiler alert---they wont be able to. Its all unproven theory and twisted biased "fact checks". Anyone who really respects science will admit that climate scientist cannot actually prove their claims. None of these platforms could win that court fight on the issues. They will have to pay all those content providers damages---likely treble damages because they know the science is not really settled and they know the most of the "fact checks" are one sided politically biased jokes. The platforms are well aware of this and are doing demonetizing views they disagree with anyway---despite the fact they know they are causing harm to individuals for disingenuous reasons.

Worse yet---not only is what they are doing unfair---its also exercising editorial control---which is totally legal---but it also makes them a publisher and not a platform---which makes them liable for anything appearing on that platform/publication. Trump would be the perfect person to fund the suit.

This is why I know the republicans are not really on our side at all., and those saying they have to take back the house are fooling themselves.

The republican silence the last 18 months speaks volumes about who they really are.

I am assuming you mean Republicans in DC? In that case, I agree. One issue remains, and that is the free market. Democrats would say Republicans want government control over what a private company does, and that's not a stance Republicans really want to be taking, even in a situation like this.

The best thing is, the more big tech takes stances like this, the more competitors they create for themselves. Long term, they are shooting themselves in the foot, but courageous entrepreneurs need our support to help build up the competition.

Legacy big tech is a dinosaur right now. The future is niche everything. Niche media, niche shopping, niche tastes. Facebook and Google are the Montgomery Ward and Sears of the internet, though it may be that obvious yet. But look at Tik Tok. Every video viewed is money out of Google's pocket.
