FloHoops CAA 2021-22 Preview: Depth Makes For A Wide-Open Season
https://www.flohoops.com/articles/716593...pen-season

A 2021-22 version of last year’s JMU could emerge. One place to look for a potential candidate: UNC Wilmington.

“They’re tired of losing,” UNC Wilmington coach Takayo Siddle said. “And they’re putting the work in to change that.”

The Seahawks started strong in Siddle’s first season at the helm, going 6-3 in non-conference play. A lengthy layoff due to COVID-19 protocols put a damper on UNC Wilmington’s prospects in the Colonial, but the Seahawks head into this new season with plenty of potential.

Siddle and Byington came into the conference under unusual circumstances because of the pandemic, including a severely limited offseason. The 2021 offseason has brought a marked difference.

“It’s been great, man,” Siddle said. “We’ve been able to have an offseason, and we started in the spring. I had my four core guys from last year’s roster here, and we were able to give them some individual attention.”

“By the end of the summer, we had laid a very solid foundation and built some good team chemistry,” he added.

We better see dramatic improvements. The league is not as good as last year. He's got his guys now. No more excuses!

Broken record.....Do you have anything of substance to add to discussion? His "guys" are mostly transfers and this is ther first year in his system. He has FOUR returning players. I expect and am confident we will see improvement. But what in the wolrd does "dramatic" improvement even mean?

Jaylen and Mike had good interviews with Mike Vaccaro. This team will be fun to follow! Jaylen mentioned the shooter transfer, Alec Oglesby and Tra White as standing out. The coach mentioned the additions of Kelly and Baker as being important.

James Baker Jr. is going to be the man on this team. Mark my words. He's a force, The rest of these guys will all play a part, but Baker is the heart of this team.

Siddle " We are going to get up and down, shoot a lot of threes, and a lot of dunks" Anyone see anything missing in that statement?

You will nitpick literally anything when it comes to Siddle. Listening to those words, and not thinking the worst of him, I hear a coach trying to generate fan interest and fill up the stands. But I don't hate the guy, so that's just me.

As basketball people, we want to hear defense, rebounding and pressing. But average fans come to games to see an exciting and fun style of play.

Its not nitpicking, it's me hoping that we really our focused on D. Understand the trying to generate excitement, but remember CB tried to sell everyone on getting up and down the floor and scoring a lot and shooting a lot of 3s. Ultimately winning is going to generate excitement for the non basketball crowd. And we both know a much improved D will need to be a part of the equation to make that happen.

Very few people watch basketball for defense (regardless of importance). So with the question asked, that seems like a reasonable response. Coming from someone not affiliated at all with UNCW

Then wait and see what's on the court. Our first game isn't far away. Everything between now and then is to hype the season. And OF COURSE better defense is a key to winning. That has always been true for any team. Is it your opinion Siddle doesn't know this? C'mon.

RE: FloHoops CAA 2021-22 Preview: Depth Makes For A Wide-Open Season
I see the ball pressure being greater this year and that should translate to pushing the opposing offenses out. The key will still be overall rebounding/plus some post presence (post guys) but that should be better this year via forcing more difficult late in-clock shots and more overall size on roster (will the staff have to consider a guy like White at times in year 1 to restore order and to also make plays?) Fast break points should be far better this year with the shear number of guys ( that will be fresher too via subs) applying that pressure with a bench that will certainly be 10 deep for an extended period deep into the year. You have to with this roster and why not?

The offensive efficiency should also be improved. Hawks have a drop dead 3 baller in Oglesby (and also Fornes) with deep range to boot and have 2 PG that can really push and are athletic. Sims is a beast that score at all 3 levels efficiently. Mike can fill out a stat sheet with the best of them and they have more overall size and that size has some skill too. Harvey and Samb are certainly in the mix as well, it's early. This looks to be a break out year. And, it's about time! Go Hawks!! Wide open league but this years' team is more equipped to compete without question.

Knowing it and fixing it are two entirely different things. I'm sure CB knew his deficiencies he just wasn't a good enough coach to implement changes to fix them. You wonder what i mean by dramatic? I mean we stunk last year. We have enough talent to be in the top 5. That's what i mean by dramatic.
I'm consistent in my critiques just as you are consistent making excuses. You already started with your rebuttal to him not having his guys. Come on ! He's got HIS guys, he has had a normal full offseason to get them together and ready(from everything we've been shown it appears he's made great strides there). No more excuses.

It would be interesting to see them sub 5 at a time and not drop off. The pace could be crazy!

Why in the world you are so focused on a year riddled with Covid shutdowns and injuries is beyond me. You seem to completely ignore how that affected every aspect of this team. I know you have a memory that goes back further than 5 months, right?

Siddle didn't meet his recruits in person or his team until a month after school ended. He couldn't practice with them, at all, until about a month before school started. His starting and only true PG, Phillips, was out with a freak infection until our last conference game on February 27th. Simms ended up going out with an injury after we played Delaware on Jan 24th.

We were supposed to start conference play against Drexel on Jan 2nd., but Covid shut us down and we didn't play again until 2 weeks later on January 18th at Towson, where we lost both games by a total of 7 points. Oh, and we couldn't practice for during that time either.

We played four more games between Jan 23 and Jan 31 and Covid cancelled our games again. We didn't play again until almost a month later at Elon on Feb 27th against Elon. Phillips was back, but Simms was out.

We played a TOTAL of 7 conference games from the beginning of conference play on Jan 2 until the end of confernce play on February 27th. Seven games in two months, with very little practice permitted in between.

Get a grip with the "we stunk" last year nonsense. You seem to have no grasp on reality and a completely unrealistic perspective on what happened. As i've said before and i'll say again, this is pretty much Siddles first season at UNCW, and I will view it that way. I have no doubt we will be better than last year, but you act as though last year was perfectly normal and that Siddle had a chance to prove himself last year, and failed, so THIS is the year. That's just ignorant.

Then wait and see what's on the court. Our first game isn't far away. Everything between now and then is to hype the season. And OF COURSE better defense is a key to winning. That has always been true for any team. Is it your opinion Siddle doesn't know this? C'mon.

There’s the excuses again, you can’t help yourself. Dude lost his team and they flat out quit on him in the CAAT and half of it transferred. Just about everyone here admitted that was a train wreck, except, not shockingly, YOU. You choose to just turn a blind eye, I don’t. All teams dealt with adversity last year, some more than others.
I think we will improve dramatically, I like the guys he’s brought in. But it’s time to see it, and we will soon. We all want the same thing, winning.
