You will nitpick literally anything when it comes to Siddle. Listening to those words, and not thinking the worst of him, I hear a coach trying to generate fan interest and fill up the stands. But I don't hate the guy, so that's just me.
As basketball people, we want to hear defense, rebounding and pressing. But average fans come to games to see an exciting and fun style of play.
Its not nitpicking, it's me hoping that we really our focused on D. Understand the trying to generate excitement, but remember CB tried to sell everyone on getting up and down the floor and scoring a lot and shooting a lot of 3s. Ultimately winning is going to generate excitement for the non basketball crowd. And we both know a much improved D will need to be a part of the equation to make that happen.
Then wait and see what's on the court. Our first game isn't far away. Everything between now and then is to hype the season. And OF COURSE better defense is a key to winning. That has always been true for any team. Is it your opinion Siddle doesn't know this? C'mon.
Knowing it and fixing it are two entirely different things. I'm sure CB knew his deficiencies he just wasn't a good enough coach to implement changes to fix them. You wonder what i mean by dramatic? I mean we stunk last year. We have enough talent to be in the top 5. That's what i mean by dramatic.
I'm consistent in my critiques just as you are consistent making excuses. You already started with your rebuttal to him not having his guys. Come on ! He's got HIS guys, he has had a normal full offseason to get them together and ready(from everything we've been shown it appears he's made great strides there). No more excuses.
Why in the world you are so focused on a year riddled with Covid shutdowns and injuries is beyond me. You seem to completely ignore how that affected every aspect of this team. I know you have a memory that goes back further than 5 months, right?
Siddle didn't meet his recruits in person or his team until a month after school ended. He couldn't practice with them, at all, until about a month before school started. His starting and only true PG, Phillips, was out with a freak infection until our last conference game on February 27th. Simms ended up going out with an injury after we played Delaware on Jan 24th.
We were supposed to start conference play against Drexel on Jan 2nd., but Covid shut us down and we didn't play again until 2 weeks later on January 18th at Towson, where we lost both games by a total of 7 points. Oh, and we couldn't practice for during that time either.
We played four more games between Jan 23 and Jan 31 and Covid cancelled our games again. We didn't play again until almost a month later at Elon on Feb 27th against Elon. Phillips was back, but Simms was out.
We played a TOTAL of 7 conference games from the beginning of conference play on Jan 2 until the end of confernce play on February 27th. Seven games in two months, with very little practice permitted in between.
Get a grip with the "we stunk" last year nonsense. You seem to have no grasp on reality and a completely unrealistic perspective on what happened. As i've said before and i'll say again, this is pretty much Siddles first season at UNCW, and I will view it that way. I have no doubt we will be better than last year, but you act as though last year was perfectly normal and that Siddle had a chance to prove himself last year, and failed, so THIS is the year. That's just ignorant.
