Interesting things about your school
Saw this on CUSAbbs, and thought it would be an educational topic.
What are some interesting things about your school? It can be about academics, athletics, the campus, alumni, etc.

South Alabama once had a live jaguar as a mascot, Mischka, it once took a self guided tour of the campus before being caught. That was back in the late 60’s.

Cajun Field, the original 'Swamp', is below sea level.

This is actually false, sadly. Georgia Southern has a swamp on campus behind the Wildlife Center. It's also behind the computer sciences building.

To be clear, you mean a football field (built in 1971) that’s the original swamp. Not that the swamp at Cajun Field predates cypress lake, which has its origins from prehistoric times. The origins of Cypress Lake is a very interesting one, and is still debated to this day. It was Cypress Grove until 1942:

I know we used to be called the Red Wave before the student body voted to change the name to Trojans. Which USC wasn’t happy with as the rumor goes.

Eagles is the third nickname of Georgia Southern University. From 1924 to 1941, the nickname was the Blue Tide. After World War II, athletic teams were referred to as the Professors, as the school was a teachers college. However, in 1959, when the school was renamed Georgia Southern College, a student vote was held to determine the new mascot. Eagles was chosen over Colonels by a narrow margin.

Best picture I could get from Google Maps, as it isn't well known.

RE: Interesting things about your school
No D1 school east of Denver has a higher elevation than App State.
App State was founded as Watauga Academy in 1899.
Roughly 30-40% of campus is a bio preserve, and is way too steep for any development, anyway. (It's the area behind the south endzone.)
It gets remarkably more snow than areas just 25 miles down the mountain. We had 14 inches one weekend when I was a student. I had to go see my then girlfriend (now wife) at her college, and i passed through Wilkesboro, roughly 25 miles away. They had less than an inch.
The last P5-equivalent program to play at App State in either football or basketball, prior to Miami football in 2016, was UNC basketball in 2000, my freshman year, which was also the year the convocation center opened.
Pretty much all the buildings on campus built since the mid-90s have green metal roofs.
The railroad line that was converted into the beautiful bike path called the Virginia Creeper Trail, from the NC state line through Damascus, VA to Abingdon, VA, passed through Todd, NC. Todd is a tiny hamlet about 10-15 minutes from Boone. The railroad line was sold (or given?) to adjacent property owners in NC. If you look really closely on Google maps, you can still see where the old railroad line was in Todd and elsewhere on the NC side.

Thanks. Was kinda kidding cuz we always say we have the only one but I guess that ain’t so. But ours is very well known and a very big part of campus. The new union wraps all around it and has very nice terraces on it to dine out on. I’ll have to dig up a few pics of that as it really makes the area very special.

Compared to Florida's Swamp, our Swamp(Cajun Field) is the original.
